Advertising to Children
17. [advertising to children][ ABC][ medicine][veterinary][ antibiotic] [boy scout]. 19th & 20th Century
ABC Booklets as Advertising Directed towards Children. United States. 1860-1923. Since young
students were first trained to recite the alphabet, ABC books grew in popularity over the years.
Towards the end of the 19th century as companies began to direct their advertisements towards
children, ABC books that utilized the alphabet to advertise a product started to appear. This
collection showcases a small sampling of such books, from the late 19th century to the early 20th
century. Below is a list of the six (6) items within the collection, followed by a brief description.
• The Illuminated White Pine Alphabet, c1860, George W. Swett
This illustrated alphabet book, written in rhyme, is accompanied by advertisements and
testimonials for several patent medicines that were produced and sold the New England Botanic
Depot (owned by Swett). This book is unique in this collection, because rather than advertising
one single product, it advertises a variety of products sold in a single store. Sewing repair and
some penciling. Measures 6 1/2" x 5".
e-list 39 12 ephemera@eclectibles.com
• The Business Man's Family Advertiser and Illustrated Alphabet, c1869, Wine of Tar
This book is your bounces back and forth between inserting the product in each letter verse, to
not even bothering to try. For example, "I is for Indian, very wrinkled and old. J is for Jar of Wine
of Tar, good for you cold." They also cop out at the end of the alphabet, not even trying to find
words for the last three letters, but rather stating " X, Y, Z, Try our Wine of Tar." Interspersed
between the verses and black and white illustrations are testimonials of those who have used the
product. There were also a few small advertising slots sold to other products on the front and
back covers, such as a horse bridle bit and an advertisement for a weekly Journal of Romance.
Sewing repair. Measures 8" x 5 1/4".
• An Easy Task for Young Students and Older Workers, c1885, Enoch Morgan's Sons Co.
Advertising for Sapolio Soap, with each letter, this book extolls the virtue of using Sapolio for all
your cleaning purposes. Every letter comes with a charming black and white line drawing and
phrase, such as "I is for Inkspot, once black on the floor; but scrubbed with Sapolio you see it no
more." Measures 5 1/4" 3 1/2".
• The Noah's Ark Primer, 1913, G C Hanford MFG Co. This colorful little book advertises Balsam
of Myrrh, a liniment which since 1846 has been produced by the Hanford family. A natural
antiseptic produced from gum resin obtained from certain trees or shrubs, it can be used to treat
muscular lameness and superficial pain from overexertion and as an external antiseptic dressing
for the treatment of minor cuts or bruises. This Alphabet book tells a simplistic version of the
bible story of Noah's Ark. Underneath the verse written about each letter is a short sentence
giving an example of the uses of the liniment. The color illustrations in the book have a delightful
watercolor quality to them. Measures 7" x 5".
• ABC Jingles, 1920, G C Hanford MFG Co. This book, also produced by the makers of the Balsam
of Myrrh is full of colorful imagery and several tongue and cheek versus. As the company
purported that it could be used both on humans and domestic animals, such as horses, the
imagery used is a variety of images from the house and farm. Measures 5 1/2" x 3 3/4".
• The Adventurous Billy and Betty, 1923, Van Camp Products Co. This book is not only an ABC
book, but also includes several short stories as well. Billy and Betty are the fictional characters
created by the Van Camp Products to advertise their various canned goods. The alphabet is
stretched across the entire book, with two letters on the bottom of each page. The illustrations in
this book are colorful and full of fantastic elements such as fairies. There is a short biography on
Billy and Betty, along with a two sections entitled, "Billy at the Boy Scouts' Camp" and "Betty
Visits the Camp Fire Girls." Included in this book is a short letter from Billy and Betty to the
reader. One interior page is detached. Measures 8 1/4" x 5 1/2"

ABC books, otherwise known as Alphabet books, first appeared in the mid-16th century. Rather than the 'books' we
think about today, they were simple hornbooks. Essentially hornbooks were primers for children that general consisted
of a sheet containing the letters of the alphabet, mounted on wood, bone, leather, or stone which was then protected by a
thin sheet of transparent horn or mic. Eventually as printing processes improved small books were created that
presented the letters of the alphabet with corresponding words and/or image. Most of these early ABC books were
religious in nature, often containing complicated lists of alphabetized syllables along with selected excerpts from the
Bible.

18. [nursery rhymes][ advertisements][ marketing][ Vernon Grant]. A Collection of "Presented By"
Advertisements Directed Towards Children. United States. 1880-1954. Advertising directly to
children became extremely prevalent towards the end of the 19th century. Generally, this was
achieved by creating a mash up of classic poems with facts about the company's product mixed in, or
adventure stories where the product featured a predominate role within the story. However, some
advertisers went a different route, publishing whole stories with little to no mention of either the
company or the product. Rather the book was brought to the reader, or simply "presented by" the
company. This collection features eight (8) items that fall into that category. The items were published
between 1880-1954. Below is brief description of a few items of note, as well as a list of the rest of the
items within the collection.
• A Merry Christmas for Young People, c1880, Halma. Halma is a board game invented in the
United States sometime in the early 1800s. It is considered the forerunner of Chinese Checkers,
and is a two-to-four player game which not only uses an odd number of playing pieces, but
varies the number of pieces depending on the number of players. The booklet features a story
about a father and daughter who live in a small town in Germany, and how on Christmas, the
father is taught the meaning of kindness and generosity. Covers are wonderfully illustrated using
slightly muted colors. Interior pages have charming black and white illustrations. There are
several ads for the Halma game throughout, even a map which shows how "Halma is played the
world over." Loose pages due to missing staples, minor tears, and tape repair. 20 pp. (including
wrappers) Measures 5 1/4" x 3 1/2".
• The Travel Book, 1910s, Sun Life Insurance Company of America. Now known as SunAmerica,
the Sun Life Insurance Company was founded in 1890 in Baltimore, MD. The only advertisement
in this little booklet is printed on the back cover, which states, "We present this little booklet to
remind you that your life insurance protection should be one of your first considerations." The
e-list 39 14 ephemera@eclectibles.com
book itself reads like a mini travel guide, taking the reader on a worldwide adventure with the
characters Betty, Tom, and Rex. The children travel from the Arctic to North Europe, and from
Central Asia all the way to South America. In each new location, the children encounter a variety
of strange animals that bring both horror and wonder to their faces. Printed in shades of orange
and green, the illustrations are exceedingly charming as they depict the children interacting with
zebras, sea horses, porcupines and a variety of other animals. 12 pp. (including wrappers)
Measures 5" x 2 3/4".
• Rhymes and Jingles for Wee Fold, 1920s, The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company
Founded in Cincinnati in 1888, the Western and Southern Life Insurance Company is still in
existence today. Printed in full color, this booklet features well known nursery rhymes such as
'Rub-a-dub-dub', and the 'Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe'. The real show stopper of this
booklet though are the illustrations drawn by Vernon Simeon Plemion Grant. Vernon Grant was
an American illustrator known for his use of color, and his vivid poster-like paintings of his
whimsical gnome characters and fairy tale drawings. Each page in this booklet is full of Grant's
amazing, fantastical and brightly colored drawings. The only mention of the publishers is on the
back cover, which is a full-page advertisement showcasing the insurance company's home office
in Cincinnati. There is however a small piece of financial advice on the bottom of each page, such
as "Save money now and have money later" and "Little dimes make big endowments." 12 pp.
(including wrappers) Measures 6 1/4" x 3 3/4".
• The Wonderful Adventures of Dolly May, 1926, Farm Life Publishing Co. Farm Life was a
monthly magazine full of articles about farming. However, in order to also appeal to a female
audience, it also had sections on gardening and how-to tips for women. They also sold through
magazine a variety of products, such as Dolly May. This booklet tells the story of Dolly May and
the (mis)adventures she goes on. The story starts in a toy store where Dolly May is the most
popular of toys due to her sweet disposition, and 'flirting eyes.' Apparently, her blue eyes can
open and shut like a real child's eyes, and as such everyone loves her; especially a little Chinaman
doll who wants to kidnap her and carry her away to his castle. Luckily (or unluckily) for Dolly
May before he can, she stumbles across a wonderful, enchanting garden where she then
promptly kidnapped by an evil witch. What follows is her adventures as she escapes and tries to
find a little girl to take care of her. At the end of the story she comes across a doll orphan's home
run by a woman named Aunt Molly, who promises to find a home for her. The booklet ends with
a short paragraph that speaks directly to the reader, asking "are you the little girl who wants
Dolly May to keep?" The book is full fanciful illustrations in black and white with red accents. 16
pp. (including wrappers) Measures 8 1/2" x 5 1/2".
