CALL FOR NOMINATIONSThe James I. Hambleton memorial award was estab-

lished by the Eastern Apicultural Society of North Americato recognize research excellence in apiculture. The EASStudent Apiculture award was established to recognizestudents studying apiculture at the undergraduate or gradu-ate level in a recognized college or university in the UnitedStates or Canada. Each award nomination must include abiographical sketch of the nominee, a list of his/her publi-cations, specific identification of the research work on whichthe nomination is based and an evaluation and appraisal ofthe accomplishment of the nominee, especially of work inthe last five-year period for Hambleton award nominees (ora shorter period for Student nominees). Two letters of rec-ommendation supporting the nomination are also required.

The Roger A. Morse Outstanding Teaching/Exten-sion Service/Regulatory Award is given annually to rec-ognize an individual in teaching/extension and/or regula-tory activity in the field of apiculture. Nominations for thisaward are welcome from any person in the field of apicul-ture or may be self-nominating. Nominations shall consistof a letter documenting the achievement of excellence inany or all of the areas of teaching/extension and /or regu-latory activities in apiculture. Some indication of the ap-pointment responsibilities should be included. In addition,a suitable CV or resume documenting the activities of thenominee must be submitted.

Nominations are now being accepted for all threeawards. The awards for 2009 will be presented at the an-nual conference of the Society at Holiday Valley, August 5,2009. Nominations and letters of recommendation shouldbe sent to: Jim Bobb, 2011 Shearer Road, Lansdale, PA 19446and received no later than April 6, 2009.

Resubmissions from a previous year should be updatedif necessary, and a new cover letter should be attached whichshould indicate that this is a resubmission and relevantdata is already in EAS possession.

Welcome to the 2009 Eastern Apicultural Society ShortCourse and Conference. The theme of this year’s meetingis TOWARD NON-CHEMICAL BEEKEEPING, a challenge,and a goal for every beekeeper. We have a bunch of extraactivities planned to go along with the lectures, workshopsand meetings, so please check out the entire schedule tosee what we’ve got planned.

Dr. Nick Calderone from New York’s Cornell Univer-sity in Ithaca has set up the Level Two Short Course witha wide variety of tasks for anybody who wants the nextlevel of experience. Level Two covers a wide variety of sub-jects, most requiring some background in honey bee biol-ogy and beekeeping experience. If you’ve matured to thispoint, you can see that this is the course for you...andthere’s always the fundamentals in Level One you can re-visit if you want.

Both levels include a half day tour of Commercial bee-keeper Andy Card’s New York headquarters (he keeps20,000 plus colonies in Mass and MS, too) and extractionand storage facility. It’s not often we get to tour a really bigoperation and see how they work, and get to listen to howthe big guys make it work. Level two has a great cast ofinstructors . . . just take a look (page 4) . . . and you won’tget a chance to listen and learn from a better group thisyear. Everybody gets the best there is in the EAS ShortCourse this year . . . no matter if you’re just starting out,or have been at it quite awhile. Don’t miss our Short Coursethis time.

On Tuesday evening there will be a Microscopy Work-shop sponsored by the Microscope Store. We are bringingin a collection of dissecting microscopes and will spend anevening with Larry Connor and Leslie Huston studyinghoney bee anatomy, plus other things only a microscopecan find. There is an additional charge of $35 to take thisexceptional workshop but it will be extraordinary. The classsize will be limited to 15. If we have enough interest wewill hold additional workshops Wednesday and Thursdayearly morning.

Our EAS Master Beekeeper Barry Thompson has workedlong and hard this year with a challenge from the Presi-dent to put together a top notch Level One Short Courseprogram. And he’s done an A+ job… He sends along thefollowing…

Ok, so you’ve gotten through the first six months, orthree months (depending where you are.) You installed thepackage successfully, or you have nurtured the nuc throughyour first season. Now what?

Hone your developing skills as a beekeeper and ex-pand your understanding of beekeeping. Take advantage ofthe information and practical tips provided by EAS MasterBeekeepers in the Level One Beekeeping Short Course,Monday-Wednesday, August 3-5, Ellicottville, NY. Amongthe topics to be covered are honey harvesting, late sum-mer management, fall treatments, winter preparations,spring build-up and readying one’s bees for the honey flownext spring and summer. Potherings from our Chairman…My term as president of the PA

State Beekeepers Association (PSBA)has come to a close and I now betterunderstand and appreciate the needfor term limits. I was president for fouryears and vice president for two yearsbefore that. It is time for a change inPennsylvania and a time for me to fo-cus my efforts in new directions.

Many have asked what I plan todo now in my “retirement.” Scott, afellow beekeeper, and I have decidedto fix up my shed and turn half into awood shop and the other into an ex-traction house. We hope to offer theextraction room for new beekeepers toextract honey. We are also planningto raise queens, something that I hadstarted to do before PSBA took up somuch of my time.

So, what does this story have todo with EAS? I can find all of the in-formation that I need to expand andexplore new areas of beekeeping eitherat an EAS convention or from fellowEAS members.

Last year, Jennifer Berry gave de-tailed workshops on grafting and rais-ing queens. This year we will visit BobBrachmann’s Russian queen breedingoperation. Many EAS members alsoraise queens and are very approach-able. Feel free to contact some of ourEAS Master Beekeepers for advice ongetting started raising queens whileyou are at the convention.

Have you thought about fabricat-ing your own woodenware? I plan tostart offering some custom-madewoodenware myself. Dave Peregmonwill be happy to discuss his experi-ences, types of wood to use, box joints,and the cost effectiveness.

Beekeepers small and large arealways looking for efficiencies to savetime and muscles. EAS will visit thecommercial operation of Andy Card.Look for ideas that you can use. Whilevisiting a large commercial operation,I discovered a simple setup for label-ing jars that I can recreate at homefor a cost of less than $5 which willapply each label quickly and uniformly.Ask me in August if I am able to makemine work.

Although pests and diseases areserious problems for the bee indus-try, my time in April and May is spentmanaging hives to prevent swarmingand maximize honey production. TomSeeley, who has been studying bee be-havior for years at Cornell, will be atEAS as will our 2008 student award win-ner, Juliana Rangel-Posada, a student

of Dr. Seeley’s. Juliana will share herresearch on swarm behavior.

Finally, if you have questions onbuilding a honey house or setting upan extraction area, Kim Flottum, EASPresident, has written a book entitledThe Honey Handbook in which he ex-plores different equipment used to ex-tract and process honey from a smalloperation that fits in a spare bathroomto a stand-alone honey house. For abeer or a nickel, Kim will share histhoughts on processing honey.

Someone asked me what is EAS?EAS is much more than a convention.Come for the speakers, but learn fromfellow beekeepers. Many of us havebecome close friends. EAS is like afamily. If you are shy or would like tobe introduced to a speaker or otherattendee, let me know and I will in-troduce you. (Warning: Some of thosepast introductions are now married.)

And now a few words about our EASfinances. The economy of the world hastanked and affected many of ourfriends, family, and perhaps some ofus individually. Factories in PA thatsupply doors, windows, furniture, andmobile homes closed leaving severalof my siblings out of work. EAS hasmade an effort to keep costs to a mini-mum this year and still provide a qual-ity convention. Many of my friends willbe camping at EAS again this year soconsider that as a way to reduce costs.We have made a decision to invitespeakers that are more local to keepour costs and fees low. Perhaps theeconomy will turn around in the nextfew months but it is prudent for us tobe frugal and insure the long termhealth of our organization. However,as you can tell by the roster of speak-ers on the program, we will still havea robust convention in Ellicottville.

As for our Honey Bee ResearchFund and other dedicated funds, themoney is safe. Either by luck or thewisdom of our treasurer, John Tulloch,the EAS Finance Committee has in-vested our funds in CDs. The value ofour funds has not decreased with themarket downturn. Many of us now wishwe had the foresight to do this withour personal funds. Other charitableinstitutions that invested their fundsin the markets have seen their invest-ments drop considerably. Your EASfunds are safe.

Divelbiss AwardDivelbiss AwardEach year EAS gives the Divelbiss

Award to that person, or husband-wifeteam, who has – over a period of years– reached the non-beekeeping publicto teach about the values of honey beesin our lives.

Each year you are asked to nomi-nate someone, not necessarily fromyour own state, who would be a candi-date for this award. You may wish toannounce this award at your local andstate organization meetings and intheir newsletters. You may wish toinform officers of state and local orga-nizations and request their input.

The nomination is really very easy.Write a letter outlining what the can-didate has done in reaching the non-beekeeping public over a period oftime. Such groups as 4-H, Scouts,school groups, media interviews, com-munity organizations, Lions, GardenClubs, county and state fairs, etc., allqualify as non-beekeeping public.

The letter may also include theteaching of beekeeper’s Short Coursesand other instructional work towardeducating beekeepers and prospectivebeekeepers. The nominee does notneed to be a member of EAS (but we’dbe delighted if he/she would join).

ShortCourse folks – stay another night andmix and mingle with the speakers, theConference attendees, and the folksfrom Andy Card’s Merrimack ValleyApiaires for a whole evening. What anopportunity!

The Conference continues onThursday and Friday, with the doublesessions going on in the morning, andbeeyard sessions, offsite sessions,workshops, vendors and more all af-ternoon. There’s more going on thanyou can do, no matter how hard youtry. But we encourage you to try to bein two, or even three places at once.Here’s a thought on economics…shareeverything with a friend – travel to-gether and split the cost, split a room,attend different short course classesand different Conference lectures andyou can share the experienceslater...it’ll cut your costs in half, anddouble your learning and experiences.Check out everything you can do allweek long.

Research is a competitive grant programdeveloped from donations received frombeekeepers and others interested infunding research on topical problemsin honey bees. Proposals are solicitedannually with award amounts to bedetermined the spring before the EASannual meeting. Requests for supportfor student projects or for equipment/supplies for distinct research projectsare given highest priority.

There will be one award for $5000in 2009. The award will be announcedat EAS 2009, but will be available byMay 1, 2009. Deadline for applicationis March 31, 2009.

And Friday you’ll have the chance to visit AndyCard’s extracting facility and listen to other talks whileyou’re there.

The PA State Beekeepers Associa-tion was well represented at the 2009PA State Farm Show in Harrisburg. Thisis one of the largest indoor agriculturalevents in the United States with over10 acres under roof exhibiting all agri-cultural related activities. The eightday event draws more than 400,000people and the State Beekeepers spon-sored three booths associated with ourbeekeeping craft. The Learning Centerhad two observation hives set up andhanded out various fact sheets abouthoney bees and our State Associationand thanks to Dadant and Mann Lakeover 600 beekeeping supply catalogswere given out by the fifth day. Theprospect of new beekeepers was over-whelming.

The Pa Beekeepers also have along tradition of making the best honeyice cream on the east coast and havea stand that sells more than 300 (1/2gallons) and dips out more than 300(3 gallon) containers during the show.This delicious treat is served in a dish,cone or on a hot Belgium waffle madeon the spot. Our third booth is a com-modity booth that sells products madeby PA Bees. The proceeds of this eventare used to support our honey queenprogram promoting our Bees. Secretary’s Report: A motion wasmade by Kim Flottum and seconded byBarry Thompson that the minutes beaccepted with the change of the wordcompatible to comparable and 11 p.m.to 11 a.m., Barry Thompson, MD/MBfilling in for Davis Morris. All boardmembers voted in favor of the motion.

A letter was received from DaveAnthony, President of the MI Beekeep-ers’ Association canceling its member-ship in EAS’ as they were not contrib-uting members at this time. Jim Bobbwill contact them to find out more in-formation.

David Laney, IN has also resigned.Treasurer’s Report: The Balance

Sheet as of October 13, 2008 showedtotal liabilities and equity of$166,014.81. Income January-Decem-ber 2008 showed $40,974.03. We havenot received the final bill from MurrayState as of yet. A motion was made byDavid Peregmon and seconded by JoeKovaleski to accept the report pend-ing audit. All board members votedunanimously in support of the motion.

John Tulloch major concern is howthis current crisis in the financialmarkets will affect EAS’ finances.John contacted Edward Jones repre-sentative and asked about the safetyof EAS’s CDs. The CDs are insured bythe government and that was confirmedand the amount increased by the billcongress passed to help stabilize the

markets. What could be in jeopardywas the interest payment.

Past President’s Report EAS2008: Kim Flottum reported that hehad spoke with Kent Williams and saidthat the financial report would reflecthow well they did. We are still waitingfor the final bill. The Board stated itwas a great conference. Kent Williamsand the KY beekeepers did a great job.

Past Chairman’s Report: KimFlottum reported that the Policy andProcedure Manual (P&P) was now elec-tronic and should go on the website.The P&P has two components: It fur-nished examples of documents, let-ters, invitations, nominations, re-quests and the like for reference whennew Directors, Committee Chairs, Ex-ecutive Committee members come onboard, or undertake chores with whichthey are not familiar. The second com-ponent is comprised of a series ofguidelines, job descriptions and thelike. These are, for the most part, therequired instructions referenced in theConstitution and Bylaws. Volume 1.0was presented to the Board. Whenchanges are made at any meeting, re-sults and comments are to be recordedin dated entries by the Secretary, not-ing what provision of the past P&P waschanged, the new provision, and a linkto the meeting minutes that containthe discussion leading to the change.

One item that the P&P should con-tain, but no references to it being re-quired, is a table of contents, and ifthe Board of Directors feels it neces-sary a glossary. Time table: hoping tohave things entered by the end of theyear and on the website by the Springmeeting.

President’s Report EAS 2009NY: to be held at the Holiday ValleyConference Center in Ellicottville, NYAugust 3-9, 2009. Bee Culture will bethe first sponsor for the EAS shortcourse and conference that is not astate beekeeping group. The Confer-ence Center will supply rooms andmeals as a package for a registrantrather than EAS registration dealingwith the details. Will focus on com-mercial beekeeping, Russian bees andharvesting. There is lots of sightseeingin the area.

There will be no Honey Show thisyear. Jim Bobb and Joe Kovaleski feltthe Honey Show should be up to thestate hosting the Conference. Thisyear an alternate Beer and Mead Showwill be presented giving the HoneyShow a rest.

A motion was made by Billy Davisand seconded by Dave Peregmon thatwe forgo the Honey Show for this con-ference and investigate what kind ofpromotion we can do to get more

people involved in the Honey Show. Allvoted in favor of the motion but two.

Robert Brewer asked to be on acommittee to review the Honey Showfor future years.

There will be two levels of bee-keeping. The Advanced Bee Classheaded up by Kim Flottum and NickCalderone with the beginners sessionspearheaded by Clarence Collison,Barry Thompson and the Master Bee-keepers. A tour of Bob Brackmann’sQueen Breeding and Andy Card’s HoneyHouse will be part of the activities.

The board toured the facilities priorto the meeting. John Baker felt that itwould be crowded for eating and meet-ing. Kim stated that they would have1½ hours to clean up from the meal.Meal counts needed to be given twoweeks in advance. They have about 102rooms blocked off with a deadline datefor release. There are also condosavailable that are not air-conditioned.The cancellation policy will be strictand will be spelled out in the Journal.

The budget was presented basedupon 325 people including speakersand vendors. Base cost for the roomis $129 + tax and a big breakfast bring-ing the total to around $160. Lunch willbe included in the registration cost.The board brought up the issue of Holi-day Valley charging the charge cardright away. Kim and Kathy will workon this.

Chairman’s Report: Jim Bobb re-ported on the following:

HAS: Jim Bobb wrote a letter toTom Webster and Phil Craft statingthat we will try not to have our meet-ing too close to each other and we tryto do some joint things together suchas a joint scholarship. Joe Kovaleskistated that Jim Bobb’s letter was anexcellent one.

Speakers Fund Update: Jim Bobbstated that the Chester County Bee-keepers and Longwood Gardens woulddonate money to the Speakers Fundalong with Jeff Pettis. Jim Bobb do-nates his speaker’s compensation tothe EAS’ speaker fund. This Fund isto be used to offset conference ex-penses. Jim Bobb and John Tullochwill work out the details on how thefunds will be distributed.

EAS Education & Outreach Com-mittee: At the EAS Summer Board ofDirectors Meeting a motion was madethat an Education & Outreach Com-mittee be formed to assess and docu-ment the education resources currentlyavailable to member state and local or-ganizations and to document areaswhere resources are lacking and pre-pare a proposal for EAS to meet thoseneeds. At that time, Jim Bobb handedout the Education and Training Sur-

vey to state directors due back by Sep-tember 15, 2008. He requested that ifyou did not send in the survey thatyou do so.

Sites:EAS 2010: will be held at Appala-

chian State University in Boone, NC.August 1-7, 2010. A site inspection isneeded.

EAS 2011: Ed Lafferty, RI was notable to attend. Kim Flottum reportedthat they had a committee formed andfeel overwhelmed. EAS will do most ofthe work. A site inspection is stillneeded.

EAS 2012: We are waiting for Vir-ginia to resubmit their invitation for2012.Committees:

Editorial Report: Kathy Sum-mers reported that she was workingwith Rick Hough on the electronicnewsletter and things were going well.Kathy stated that Rick was doing ex-ceptionally well with his cancer treat-ments and that he was at home. Be-cause of all of Rick’s dedicated serviceto keeping our website updated, a mo-tion was made by Kathy Summers andseconded by Kim Flottum to pay forRick’s expenses to EAS 09. All votedin favor of the motion.

Membership: Brouchers: Therewill be a brochure for EAS 09 after thefirst of the year.

Renewals: John Tulloch statedthat this year we took a more aggres-sive approach to the membership re-newal. Renewal notices went out inSeptember and thus far we have hadnearly 100 renewals. We will repeat thesolicitation after the first of the year.Approximately 600 notices were sentout. We currently have 547 members.

Corporate Membership: KimFlottum stated that we need to beginthe program by approaching corpora-tions, and setting fees. John Tullochfeels that we need to spell out theRights and Privileges of a CorporateMembership by the Spring EAS BoardMeeting.

Non Renewal List: The board de-cided to send the non-renewal list out(February 2009) after the January bill-ing.

Master Beekeepers: Barry Thomp-son reported that some Master Bee-keepers wanted compensation forteaching the Short Course class whileothers did not. Barry asked for thoseMBs attending the Fall EAS BoardMeeting to state how they felt. JoeKovaleski felt that no compensationshould be given because we need toput forth some of our efforts. AaronMorris felt that compensation was

vague and a grey area, therefore, MBshould be compensated in the samemanners. Billy Davis felt that he wouldnot have been able to participate inthe workshop had he not been com-pensated. He feels that he volunteersenough and it would help if he couldbe compensated.

Kim Flottum offered no charge forregistration for the Short Course if youteach the short course and in returnyou would be able to attend everythingelse for free. John Tulloch felt theboard needs to make it clear what thecompensation was going to cover.Barry Thompson asked that the topicbe tabled.

Master Beekeepers Exam: BarryThompson stated that we now have twonew MBs. They are trying to find outwho the active MBs are and hoping tohave the first MB’s newsletter out be-fore the Annual Meeting.

Barry Thompson stated that oneperson challenged the grading of theirMB exam. Jim Bobb responded to theapplicant by referring the situationback to the MBs. The board felt thefinal decision rested with the MBs.

Awards: The Student Award,J.I.Hambleton, Roger A. Morse/WeissTeaching, Extension and RegulatoryAward and Divelbiss Award will all besent out the first of the year.

Foundation for Honey Bee Re-search: There is about $61,000 in theHBR fund. Dave Tarpy was not able toattend but put forth a written motionwhich was seconded by Aaron Morristhat $5000 be awarded to the HBR win-ner at EAS 09. All voted in favor of themotion.

CCD: The. HB Foundation awarded($5000) to Colony Collapse Disorder(CCD) grant to the Penn State Univer-sity team of Dennis vanEnglesdorp andDiana Cox-Foster. The money has nowbeen used up.

Resolutions: Aaron Morse statedthat Toni Downs and Tammy Horn pre-sented a great resolution at EAS 08.Resolutions will be presented at EAS09.

Historian: The Historian report isdue at EAS 09 NY.

Life Members: Aaron Morrisstated that two more Life Memberscame in. John Tulloch stated that thereare 547 members with 225 being LifeMembers. We need to know where weare financially so we know if we haveto take money from the Life Member-ship Fund.

Endowment Fund: John Tullochstated that we need another source ofrevenue and endowments are a goodplace to start. He was hoping to be ableto bring the Edward Jones Investmentpeople to the next board meeting ifheld in West Chester, PA.

Nominations: Ann Harman hasstepped down as the NominatingChairperson. An official letter must besubmitted from each state nominat-ing their candidate for director to theEAS board.

ing: EAS was using the Conference callat this meeting. All they needed to dowas call the Holiday Valley numberalong with the code number. CarolCottrill, Steve Genta and RobertBrewer participated in the Conferencecall. The participants said it was hardto hear as it kept cutting out. LorettaSurprenant will contact the otherBoard Members who said they wantedto be part of the Conference call butwas not to see why they did not takepart in the call.

Young Beekeeper’s Award: At theEAS Summer Meeting in KY, approvalwas given to set up a young beekeep-ers award with criteria to be decided.An exploratory committee consistingof Billy Davis, Dave Peregmon andBrenda Kriselling was set up. BillyDavis and Brenda Kriselling inter-viewed several Young Beekeepers andthey will have a recommendation asto how it will be administrated.

With support of EAS and several U.S. Bee-keeper organizations, Cornell University’s MannLibrary announces that the first 20 volumes of theAMERICAN BEE JOURNAL are now online in theHive and the Honey Bee Collection of historical bee-keeping materials (http://bees.library.cornell.edu).This is a continuation of the Library’s effort to makeavailable online rare beekeeping books/Journals.

This effort to compliment the Hive and the HoneyBee digitization program with early ABJ journalsbegan two years ago. With matching funds from theLibrary preservation program, an additional 20 vol-umes of the ABJ are also being copied and visitorsto the online site should be able to view the full 40earliest volumes of ABJ online (1861-1884) byspring 2009.

ABJ is the first English language journal in thebeekeeping field. Early editions, started/initially ed-ited by Samual Wagner of York PA, include articlesby L.L. Langstroth, Henry Alley, Moses Quimby andA.I. Root.
