Dear Attendee,
Welcome and thank you for attending Health Education England -East of England’s GP Trainee event, Preparing for Practice: Life after GP Training.
This pack includes a copy of the event programme, site map, workshop synopses, facilitator biographies and workforce contacts.
WIFI is open and free, just follow the QHotel link.
All of our meetings and presentations are being led by key Primary Care organisations from across the EoE region. We hope that the content will prove highly informative and useful as you prepare for the completion of your training programme.
Please review the Programme and make a decision on which two workshops you wish to attend. You do not need to book a place, please just go to the appropriate room at the time of the workshop you wish to attend.
If the workshop you have selected to attend is full (the facilitator for that workshop will advise you, or there will be a full sign on the door), please choose an alternative workshop for that session. After lunch, you will have another chance to attend your desired workshop.
To help us with the organisation and planning of the next event; you will be e-mailed a link to provide us with some feedback. The survey will be completed online after the event and a certificate of attendance will be e-mailed to you.

Values and Standards of Leadership Palmer Winstanley
Values and Standards are fundamental to the Military in everything they do. This talk will explore how
training, education and culture are ingrained in the behaviours of its leaders, and how this can be
translated into NHS clinical and management environments.

The Essentials: Appraisals and Revalidation Sarah Rann

This session will include some of the essentials you need to remember in order to demonstrate you
are professionally ‘fit’ for work in GP roles.
Medico-legal Topics: Protecting Patients in General Practice Myooran Nathan
MDDUS
This workshop will discuss some of the key medico-legal issues that you will encounter in General
Practice, with a focus on reducing risk and dealing with adverse incidents. Key topics for discussion
will be good practice in record-keeping, safe prescribing, and preventing and dealing with complaints.
How the BMA Can Support You in Your GP Career Alison Rosen
BMA
This session will review the contractual terms and conditions relating to Locum/Freelance GPs,
Salaried GPs and GP partners. At the end of the session, attendees will have a greater
understanding of the implications each of these categories has for their employment status, their legal
and contractual entitlement and their responsibilities. Importantly, the session will explain how the
BMA can support you throughout your career, not just in terms of negotiation terms and conditions
and representation in the workplace, but also in your career development, work life balance and
access to premium products as part of your standard membership benefits or on preferential terms.
Priorities, Options and Opportunities after Training Rachael Marchant
First 5
An interactive exploration of the exciting opportunities open to you as a GP. Your qualification as a
GP opens many more doors than just those of your consulting room. This workshop will help you to
explore what you want from your career and what opportunities are available. If you are going to be a
GP for many years which we hope you will it is important you know how to find work that you really
enjoy and be aware of the many options out there.

The British Medical Association (BMA) is the trade union and professional body for doctors in the UK . Our vision is a profession of valued doctors delivering the highest quality health services.
East & West Suffolk CEPN
CEPN (Community Education Provider Networks), covering Ipswich & East and West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Groups, is working together with representatives from Primary Care and Community Care services, as well as training providers, to address workforce and workload challenges. CEPN aims to ensure that Suffolk has the right number of health and care professionals with the optimum skills to meet the evolving needs of local people.
Our vision is for practices to play an active role in the planning and implementation of the project to ensure that the work taking place meets the need of those working on the front line. Facilitator Biographies
Alison Rosen
Alison Rosen has many years’ experience as a BMA Employment Advisor representing both
employed doctors and advising members who employ staff.
Elaine Grierson
Elaine Grierson is an HR Service Manager in the Case Management Team working for the Lead
Employer at St Helens & Knowsley NHS Trust. Elaine is a Chartered Member of the CIPD and before
joining the NHS in January this year worked in financial services for 14 years.
Myooran Nathan
Myooran Nathan graduated from Bristol University in 2001, and while training in oncology gained
MRCP in 2005. He gained MRCGP in 2009, and worked as a sessional GP for seven years. He
completed a Masters in Medical Law at King’s College London in 2016 and joined MDDUS in 2016 as
a full-time Medical Adviser.
John Howard
John Howard is the Postgraduate GP Dean in the East of England with a long involvement in GP and
Primary Care education. He is also a Deputy Postgraduate Dean. John has been awarded a
commendation from the Royal College of General Practitioners for outstanding contributions to
general practice and primary care. Outside medical education John sings, walks with his wife and
dogs and tries to keep his garden under some sort of control.
Palmer Winstanley
Palmer Winstanley was an Officer for 10 years in the Infantry, serving in Kosovo and twice in
Afghanistan. He joined the NHS 3 years ago and has Managed two A&E Departments, Director for
Clinical support Services and moving on to Director for Women’s and Children’s services whilst
studying for a Masters in Global Health.

Facilitator Biographies
Rachael Marchant
Dr Rachael Marchant is a local GP who completed her GP training in Southend two a half years ago.
She now works as a portfolio GP locally in a wide variety of roles. Clinically she works two days a
week as a salaried GP in a large training practice and occasionally now ad hoc for the out of hours
service having worked for them quite a lot when she first completed her training. She is the Macmillan
GP for Southend CCG and holds posts as the clinical support fellow for both cancer and end of life
care for the Royal college of GPs partnerships with Cancer research UK and Marie Curie respectively.
She is also the RCGP ambassador for Mid and South Essex STP and holds a voluntary role on the
RCGP Essex faculty board as First 5 lead. She strongly believes that general practice offers so many
career options that all GPs should be able to find work they enjoy.
Sarah Rann
Sarah Rann is a GP who also works for NHSE and HEE. She is involved with practitioners in difficulty in both roles. She also runs a coaching network for GPs - Akeso and a website to support GPs Epione.
Vijay Nayar
Vijay Nayar is a GP Trainer and the Head of GP School working for Health Education East of
England. Vijay works with the Professional Support Unit as well as providing careers advice.
