Issue 3, March 2018 My dear Parents/Carers/Young People
This term our young people have been continuing to work and to
study hard in class and at home. Together with our academic
studies, for our Lenten Challenge we have been raising money for
Mary’s Meals.
Our target is for every class to raise at least £13.90 as this sum can
feed one child for a whole year in some of the world’s poorest
countries. Thank you for your support of this whole school initia-
tive.
Pope Francis encourages us all to “give alms” (give money and
food to the poor) and he tells us : “Alms-giving sets us free from
greed and helps us regard our neighbour as a brother or sister.
What I possess is never mine alone. How I would like alms-giving
to become a genuine style of life for each of us ——I echo Saint
Paul’s urging us to take up a collection for the community”.

On behalf of us all at Saint Paul’s R.C. High School I would like
to wish you and your family a very happy Easter.
Kind Regards
Ms Pierotti
OUR SCHOOL VALUES INCLUDE : COMPASSION AND GRATTITUDE
SCHOOL OF AMBITION—”AIMING HIGH FOR YOUNG PEOPLE”
Five new campus cops set to patrol Glasgow schools
FROM diverting pupils away from flute bands to dispensing career advice and building bonds with parents, Glasgow's new
campus cops are breaking down barriers.
Police Scotland has increased the number of police officers in city schools by around 50 per cent in a bid to reduce exclusions
and raise attainment.
And, although head teachers reported some concerns from parents, the five new School Based Officers are aiming to make a
lasting difference to pupils.
All five take up posts in South West Glasgow schools after head teachers identified their schools could benefit from a police
presence.
Bellahouston Academy had a campus officer for three years so head teacher Ian Anderson is well aware of the benefits they
bring.
He said: "In a sense it's difficult to say why having a campus officer is so successful because it affects us across the board.
"The last thing he was doing was functioning as a police officer. Rather, he was establishing relationships with pupils and par-
ents.
"He reinforced school rules but also rules more generally for outside school - he never acted as a first responder."
Lisa Pierotti, head teacher of St Paul's High School, added: "We had been sharing a campus officer and saw the benefits we
were getting from that.
"We talked about what we could do to raise attainment in our school and realised having an officer full time would make a
difference.
"The South West division knew we were keen and so when this opportunity came up we jumped at it."
The five new officers include: Leigh McPartland, who is based in St Paul's High School; Rachael Gallagher, now in Rosshall
Academy; Craig Murie, who joins Govan High School; Daniel Johnston, based in Hillpark Secondary; and Harry Hutchison, who
is part of Bellahouston Academy.
Glasgow City Council said there are currently around 10 campus officers across the city, meaning the five new posts are a sub-
stantial increase.
The roles will be paid for by Police Scotland and Pupil Equity Fund (PEF) cash, Scottish Government money given directly to
schools to help close the attainment gap.
Chief Inspector Alan Bowater, area commander for South West Glasgow said it had taken 10 months to get the scheme in
place.
He added: "Over 29 years I have noticed that police and young people don't get on as well as they should, there is a barrier
there that is not being broken down.
"I interviewed all of the officers involved personally. I was looking for additional skills they could bring into play and people
who had the interests of the young people at heart."
Geri Collins, head teacher of Hillpark Secondary School, said: "I had come from Easterhouse where we had a campus officer
and I really felt it, not having one at Hillpark.
"He used to take a group of disengaged boys out fishing on a Sunday. He did bike maintenance with pupils.
"It's really important to have the right person in school and we feel we do now at Hillpark."
The five officers, who come from varied backgrounds, took up their posts earlier this month and are already working to make
connections with young people.
PC Murie was a PE teacher before joining the force so wanted to combine his education and police skills.
PC Johnston worked with Skills Development Scotland with young people and his wife is a social worker so working in a
school was an interesting option for him.
The officer, originally from Northern Ireland, plans to use music to engage pupils
He said: "I'm going to be starting a couple of bands. I played in a pipe band back home as a drummer.
"Some of the kids are in flute bands, which have the more negative connotations, so I want to catch them and teach them a
different style of drumming and start a band with them."
PC Hutchison has been a campus officer for three years and believes it is vital to build a positive relationship between young
people and the police.
He said: "The challenge is getting them to trust you. Now they come to me. I can't even get out of my car in the morning. But I
go to them too, even just for a kick about.
"If any of them have offended over the weekend they will actually come and tell you and ask you what to do.
"It does make you proud when they achieve."
PC McPartland, who has been working as a campus officer since April last year, added: "But it also makes you so disappointed
when they do something wrong.
"I have two kids of my own but this is like having another 800.
"They come and say things like, 'If you did this, what would happen to you?' and you have to hope it's hypothetical question
and then give them the best advice you can."
Alison Mitchell, Rosshall Academy head teacher, believes the continuity of having one officer to deal with, should any prob-
lems arise for pupils, will make a difference in her school.
She said: "If there are any issues that need dealt with then the officer is there from
start to finish - and I have seen perceptions of the police change.
"Our PTA had some mixed views. The main hesitation is that it might damage the per-
ception of the school - 'There must be anti-social behavior because you have police
there.'
"But now they see the role is much more pastoral."
Head teacher of Govan High, Nancy Belford, added: "Young people were quite shocked
to see a police officer in school at first.
"Their natural reaction is, 'Who's in trouble? What's happened?' but they are now really gravi-
tating towards him and building positive relationships."
P.C Leigh McPartland
Big congratulations to Saint Paul's High School Swim-
mers Darren and Dylan Connell, pictured here handing
over a cheque for Six Hundred and Five Pounds to the
Beatson Cancer Charity. The money was raised from a
half mile open water swim at Loch Lomond last Au-
gust. Well done boys!
After all the recent Snow, some sun to look forward to will be nice! Forms to take part in next year’s trip to Spain are
available from Mr Deveney or Mrs Maguuire! Place are limited and filling up fast! Any remaining spaces will be of-
fered to our new S1 pupils on the P7 Induction days.

S3 Young Chemical Ambassador Programme
Our S3 Young Chemical Ambassadors Bailey MacDonald, Georgia
Cavanagh, Frankie McGhee, Ryan Murray and Ewan Elliot have taken
part in a 5 day programme (follow twitter: #YoungChemAmbassador) with
mentors from Strathclyde University’s Chemical Engineering department
where they met industry specialists, and pupils from other schools while
taking part in many activities: a university tour, practical experiments (e.g.
making bouncy balls & nano dirt). They will be presenting their own pro-
ject to the peers in their class in mid-March on “sludge—investigating
sand castles”.
STEM Jacob’s Engineering
The science dept. is very excited about the Jacob's Engineering Challenge, in which a number of S1 pupils will be
taking part in before and after Easter. This is a group project where the pupils will choose a issue and come up
with creative solutions and ideas to solve and come up with ideas for the city to deal with issues such as air pollu-
tion, or flooding. All of these problems are based on a Glasgow context and feed into promoting teamwork, social
skills and creativity - as well as giving the pupils an opportunity to engage with STEM subjects in a real-life con-
text.
S2 Sirens Netball
The S2.4 Girls PE class had a series of netball
lessons delivered by Sirens Netball Club in PE.
Some of the girls then went on to represent St
Paul's at a Glasgow Schools Netball Tournament
and have successfully set up an after school net-
ball club on Wednesdays for all S1 to S3s.

Senior Boys Football
The boys have made it through to the Cameroonian Cup semi final where will play Lourdes Secondary. If they are successful
they will go forward to the final in April. Good Luck Lads!!!
Girls Rugby
Under 14 Girls rugby attended the Captains run for the Women's Scotland Vs France
game getting the opportunity to see how they train and even got a meet and greet
with the player. They were also invited to play in a tournament before the Women's
Scotland Vs England game where they played against a variety of other schools.
Before the game they were part of the flag bearer party for the teams running onto
the pitch. These were both fantastic opportunities for the girls to see what it takes to reach the highest level of their sport.
Gymnastics
The gymnastics team competed at the Glasgow Schools Gymnastics Competition. Well
done to all who took part, for many it was the first time they had competed at that level.
Girls Football
The girls s1 to s4 football team have returned to their winning ways in the Glasgow
Schools league. They have been undefeated since returning in the new year.
Young Ambassadors
Our Young Ambassadors have been working hard all year helping to run all the wonderful extra curricular clubs that we have
going on in the PE department learning valuable teamwork and leadership skills along the way. They have now taken on the
challenge to organise and run an inter-house Triathlon for S1 to S3 where pupils will be in teams of 3 from their house and
compete for the first annual triathlon trophies!!!!
Sports and Dance Leaders
Our S3 Sports and Dance Leaders have been working hard to put all they have learned over the last 6 months into practice by
designing and delivering sessions to groups of pupils from St Angela’s. Both participants and leaders seem to be enjoying the
experience.
Joshua Granger
A massive well done to Joshua who has continues to add to his impressive medal collection with 2
Gold’s & 1 Silver following the Scottish Regional Championships at Scotstoun recently for front and
back crawl and breast stroke.

Lenten Fundraising
We are running a Mary’s Meals Feeding Programme that will run throughout the year rather than just for
the Season of Lent.
It will run as follows:
Staff have signed up to raising money with a particular class.
The class have received a supporter’s certificate and a blue Mary’s Meals fundraising cup.
Classes are being encouraged to put any spare change they have in the cup throughout the year.
Each time the class manages to raise £13.90 (amount it takes to feed a child for a whole year) it
is sent to the RE department.
The class receive a laminated Mary’s Meals mug picture each time they raise £13.90 to display
beside their certificate on the wall.
Well done to our Caritas pupils who have just handed in their final submissions.
It has been wonderful to read how much of an impact Caritas has had on your lives.
The commitment and compassion you have shown both inside and outside school have been amazing.

Miss O'Neill, school librarian, and Miss Steen, English
teacher, are joining forces to run a Carnegie Medal shadow-
ing group starting just before Easter. The group will be made up of S1
and S2 pupils who choose to sign up. We will be reading the shortlisted
books for the Carnegie Medal, a book prize awarded every year by chil-
dren's librarians for an outstanding book written in English for children
and young people. The shadowing group is basically a reading group,
with lots of extra activities, including writing book reviews, or recording
video book reviews, to post on the official website. We will meet every Tuesday lunchtime from
Easter until the end of the school year to talk about the books. There will also be competitions,
writing blog posts, dramatic interpretations of scenes from the books and much more. Amnesty
International also provide resources to help us use the books to have discussions with pupils
about human rights. All pupils taking part will get a certificate at the end. You can find out more
here: http://www.carnegiegreenaway.org.uk/. Please encourage your children to get involved!
Miss O'Neill would like to thank her two new library assistants, S2
Melissa Campbell and S1 Ikram Tawfeeq. They each work at the li-
brary desk one lunchtime a week, issuing and returning books for their
fellow pupils, and this lets the librarian run the weekly library club and
help out pupils around the library. Pupils of all year groups are welcome
to volunteer for library duties - there are lots of different activities, includ-
ing shelving, making book displays, assisting at library events, and adding new books to the li-
brary catalogue, as well as working at the issue desk.

On Friday 9th February, the City Chambers host-
ed the Glasgow Language Awards. This is a
chance to showcase and recognise the great lan-
guage learning taking place in Glasgow, at both
Primary and Secondary level. Due to the hard
work of the pupils here at St Paul’s, we were
lucky enough to win two awards. For their Elec-
tive in Mandarin last year, our S1 class won
an ‘Excellence in Language’ Award. And for
our Employability project with SP Energy Networks, we won the
‘Language Partnership’ Award.
We are very proud of all the pupils involved and a big big thank
you to Emily Wong, Aimee Chadha, Erin Rice and Ross Anderson
for accepting the awards on behalf of their classes.
Bravo à tous!

Recently PE and Drama worked closely
with a variety of S1/S2 pupils in order to
film for the "Determined to Make Movies
Competition" The filming took place in
many different locations around Glasgow
and is closely linked to the European
Championships which will be hosted in
Glasgow later in the year. The pupils took
part in Gymnastics, Rowing, Cycling, Golf and many other sports. All who
took part did exceptionally well and we look forward to presenting our film
on completion.
Super Saturday supported
study classes have been run-
ning throughout term 3 to sup-
port all our SQA pupils.
Great attendance and fantastic
support from our teachers.

Congratulations to Calum Godfrey (96%) and Iris He (84%) for achieving the two highest marks in the National 5
Mathematics prelim. Well done also to Kasam Sagir (92%) and Chloe Carlin (80%) who achieved the top marks for
Higher. These are the results of a huge amount of work from S1. Keep it up for the final exam in May!
Fermi Problems
Fermi Problems are problems that require a range of numerical skills to solve. For S2 Careers Week, pupils
worked on the following problem:
How much money does the average person make in their career?
What information would you need to estimate to solve this problem? Send any solutions to the department twitter!
Puzzle
How many possible solutions can you find by placing single digits in these boxes?
Puzzle Club takes place in the maths department on Tuesday and
now Thursday lunchtimes in Dr McIntosh’s room.

Positive Destinations
Congratulations to Chloe Allan (in photos attached) who has a Conditional place at Kelvin College starting in August to study City and Guilds Automotive Service and Repair. Chloe is delighted and thinks her experience at college 2 afternoons a week in S5 has helped her to achieve this and build her skills and confidence in mechanics.
Further congratulations to all pupils receiving conditional and unconditional places at College and University, hard work pays off!
Any S4/5/6 pupil who is thinking of leaving and not made any applications should see the Careers Advisors, Greg Leighton or Miss McManus for support.
Work Placements
Congratulations to the 3 Senior pupils who recently completed
their work placements with BAE Systems. Ryan McIlwham, Len-
non Murray and Cameron Gilchrist took part in their new work
experience programme which has a silver certificate of accredita-
tion by Industrial Cadets. The 5 day programme allowed the
boys to gain insight into all 4 apprenticeship programmes and
general working life in BAE Systems whilst developing skills such
as team working and delivering presentations. The pupils had the fantastic opportunity to get involved in the depar-
ture of their Offshore Patrol Vessel, Forth. All student really valued the experience with 100% saying they would
recommend it to a friend and that is has helped shape their career choices. Ryan and Lennon both hope this expe-
rience will support their application for an apprenticeship.
Work placements will take place again after exams in June. S4/5/6 pupils are encouraged to see Miss McManus as
soon as possible if they would like to develop their skills for learning, life and work by taking part in a work place-
ment.
Health and Food Technology
Health and Food Technology S2 pupils organised some
successful events, including a Christmas lunch, Valentines
Brunch, Tennant’s Academy Baking Master class.
They were also Glasgow prize winners at a “Love Food
Hate Waste" competition in Edinburgh. Staff, Parents,
guardians and the local community were invited to all
events share in the pupils success. Here are a few photo-
graphs.
Celebrating Success outside of school!
We are delighted to add another feature to our Web-site- A Congratulations Corner! Our young
people are achieving so much success in school but we are also very proud of their wider
achievements - S2 have recently shared some of their achievements with us. Please have a look. Look out soon
for other wider achievements from our other year groups- and, of course, more from S2! Please encourage
your child to share news of their achievements with us after assemblies- or you can also inform their Year
Head or Pastoral care teacher.
Social Subjects
Senior Pupils
Well done to all our senior pupils who have been attending supported study and evening and weekend master classes. Keep going, your hard work will pay off!
Once again, we are organising a foreign trip for senior pupils in June 2018. This year we are go-ing to Berlin and it promises to be an excellent trip. We will be visiting the Reichstag, Branden-burg Gate, Holocaust Memorial, Olympic Stadium and, of course, the Berlin Wall among other highlights. We will be holding an information evening for parents very soon. Details and date to follow.
S2 Citizenship
S2 Citizenship classes are taking part in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative. The YPI is an ac-
tive citizenship programme that raises awareness amongst young people about philanthropy and
their local community. Our S2 pupils will be responsible for directing a £3000 YPI Grant to a local
charity through a unique programme of team work, research and competition. YPI Scotland is all
about creativity and passion, leaving the four walls of the classroom behind, and supporting the
issues young people care most about. This is a fantastic project and there is a lot of great work
taking place in our S2 Citizenship classes. A full update including the winning local charity will be
included in the Summer Newsletter!
