Ecology

Ecology is study of interactions between

non-living components (abiotic factors) in the environment…light waterwindnutrients in soilheatsolar radiationatmosphere, etc.

AND…

Living organisms (biotic factors)…PlantsAnimalsmicroorganisms in soil, etc.

Organism

An organism is any single living creature.

Organism can be single celled or made up of many cells working together.

•Fungi•Protista•Bacteria

Populations

All the organisms in an ecosystem that belong to the same species

They must be able to interbreed with

each other!

Community A community is all the

populations of different species that live in an ecosystem.

Community ONLY consists of living

organisms!

Community of African grasslands

Ecosystem

All the organisms living in an area and the nonliving features of their environment

Living (biotic) and nonliving

(abiotic)

Biomes

Biomes are regions of the world with similar climate (weather, temperature) animals and plants.

Consist of living and nonliving

Biomes

Tundra

Desert

Rain Forest

Tiaga

Grasslands

Ocean

Temperate Forest

Biosphere

The biosphere is defined as the sphere or area around the planet Earth where life exists.

OUR LIVING WORLD

They ALL relate to each

other!

FOOD CHAINdiagram.

Food chains – arrows show the direction of energy flow.

Relationships

The relationships between organisms in an ecosystem can be shown by a food web.
