in a forest and the fire danger is
high. Fireworks are absolutely not allowed
in El Dorado County.
Thought of the Day Over-thinkin’ ruins ya. Ruins the situation, twists things around, makes you worry, and just makes everything much worse than it actually is.—Cowboy wisdom "Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again."-- from THE SECOND BOOK OF KYFHO (Revised Eastern Sect Edition)

OH PLEASE!
An animal rights
group is campaign-
ing to have horse
drawn carriage rides banned in Old
Town Sacramento because it is cruel to
make horses work hard. You have to
figure they will target the HISTORIC
WAGON TRAIN will be next, fol-
lowed by the PONY EXPRESS.
Perhaps we should ask Rick and Diana
Newborn of TOP HAND RANCH (and
the HISTORIC WAGON TRAIN)
what they think of this proposal. Better
yet, let’s ask Pollock Pines’ own Vi
Tara (Also of the HISTORIC WAG-
ON TRAIN) what she thinks of this.
Tell ya what: If that passes, let’s cam-
paign for a ban on fencepost digging,
firewood cutting, and brush clearing. If
pulling a wagon is cruel for a draught
horse, then we humans should get the
same consideration, don't’cha think?

ANOTHER GOURMET
DELIGHT(?)
YOU WON’T
FIND AT C&T
Bacon, bananas, PB&J - all
on a custard-filled donutrocity . It’s
called the Dead Elvis, and you can only
find it in San Jose. Now you know what
really killed him.
But wait! There’s more!
It sounds too gut-busting to be true, but
it is: A glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut,
split open and stuffed with savory slop-
py joe, doused in a tomato-based sauce
and sprinkled with cheese. It's not a re-
sponse to Dunkin' Donut's new bacon-
and-egg-on-a-donut breakfast sandwich,
though. The Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe is
the brainchild of Charlie Boghosian,
owner of Chicken Charlie's, which has
been providing food to county fairs in
Southern California for 17 years.

the MODEL AUTOMOBILE RAC-
ING SOCIETY (M.A.R.S.) are happy
to announce that a new type of R/C rac-
ing is coming to Pollock Pines. Continued on page 7)
THE RIDER IS COMING,
THE RIDER IS COMING!
The Pony Express is alive and well!

MAN’S HALL at about 11:00 pm, on June

OF THE WORLDS DISCLAIMER for our readers.
Once again reminding you that the
stories about the THUNDER IN
THE PINES RACING CIRCUIT
and the PONY EXPRESS 1900 EN-
DURANCE RACE FOR AUTOMOBILES
are works of fiction, for your entertainment,
much like Orson Welles’ martian invasion radio
broadcast in 1938. Some names and places are
real, but most of it is entertaining nonsense.
IT’S BAAACK! INTERNET TELEPHONE
RUMOR RETURNS
An oldie but goodie has
returned. Got an email
from an old work buddy
yesterday warning me that if some-
body calls, claiming to be from the
phone company, asking me to help
diagnose a telephone line problem
by pressing 90# on my phone, and
then hang up, is a scam that could
allow the scammer to make long
distance phone calls and stick me
with the bill. Remember that one?
Urban Legend
It’s true….sorta.
What the warning letter floating around
the Net doesn't say is that this scam on-
ly works on telephones where you have
to dial 9 to get an outside line. Unless
you have to dial 9 to get an outside line
at home, this scam does not affect zero-

R/C RACING and THUNDER IN THE PINES RACING CIR-
CUIT (Con’t from page 4)
M.A.R.S. will introduce 1 to 5 Scale
Gas-Powered cars and will be build-
ing a duplicate of the Pollock Pines
circuit on a dedicated model race-
track built on land near Fresh Pond.
Here you can see the size of the cars,
this one being a model of a Ford GT-
40 racer.
Different tech, different rules
Two unique features of M.A.R.S. both
center on how the cars are controlled.
First, the old style handheld R/C “gun”
style controller for cars is history.
“Drivers” will be sitting in chairs that
have steering wheels and pedals that control the
steering and throttles on the model cars. Sec-
ondly, drivers will be viewing
the course through television
cameras that will show video
on screens. The course will
look a lot like a video arcade
parlor. It is anticipated that
the giant R/C cars and the raceway will bring
participants and tourists to Pollock Pines, where
they will be exposed to our many other delights.
Please review the disclaimer on page 6 before you get too excited about this.

pound" on a residential phone will only
give you a busy signal. That's it.
On some business phones, however, di-
aling "nine-zero-pound" may transfer a
call to an outside operator and give the
caller the opportunity to call anywhere
in the world and charge it to your busi-
ness' phone bill ... maybe. It all depends
on how your business' telephone system
is set up.
“Nuff said.
