EDUCATING A DIFFERENT KIND OF LAWYER
notre dame law 3
At Notre Dame Law School, students and faculty of diverse backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to broaden their social, spiritual, and personal lives while honing their intellectual and professional skills to serve the good of all.
The Notre Dame experience inspires students to examine their studies and practice of law within the context of their responsibilities as members
of the bar, and as members of various political, social, and faith communities. This perspective encourages robust debate on tough questions of policy, values, and faith both inside and outside of the classroom. Students at Notre Dame Law School not only learn about the technical skills to be successful practicing lawyers—they also learn about the values and commitments that shape our laws.

Notre Dame Law School is an excellent place to begin building a legal career. The people, the place, and the culture exemplify a warm, yet challenging, environment to learn and grow. My love for Notre Dame has only grown as I have gained lifelong friends from around the country, been welcomed into a wide and loyal alumni community, and developed a deeper understanding of the responsibility associated with the legal profession.

Since I was 6 years old, I always wanted to go to law school to legally combat the inequities that I saw in my community. I chose to attend Notre Dame Law School because I believe my career path embodied what it meant to be a ‘Different Kind of Lawyer.’ I knew I wanted to be a servant to the public, and I knew that my passion would be supported here at Notre Dame by the professors and the school.

THE EXPERIENCE
FACULTY
Notre Dame Law School has many impressive qualities, but the faculty is the primary reason I chose—and love—the school. Every professor I have had has been as kind and generous as they have been excellent. Open office hours, speedy email responses, genuine feedback, and heartfelt encouragement are the norm. Courses I looked forward to, such as Constitutional Law with Professor A.J. Bellia, have exceeded my expectations. Subjects I was previously less excited about, such as Property, became fascinating due to the passion of the professors like Nicole Garnett.
Notre Dame Law School brings a diverse, committed faculty who are not only renowned in their areas of legal expertise, but also have a passion for providing a unique and challenging professional education to their students. This passion for teaching can be seen both inside and outside the classroom,
whether through intense legal debate or informal discussions in social settings. The Notre Dame Law faculty is a truly one-of-a-kind community of scholars who take pride in educating the future of the profession with values, accountability, and integrity.

GALILEE (Group Alternative Live-in Legal Education) is the best not-so-secret program at Notre Dame Law School. It is a perfect way for 1L students to step foot in their target market before the summer. Not only did this unique justice immersion experience open my eyes to the breadth of legal opportunities in public interest work, but it also gave me a renewed perspective on my legal studies and enabled me to become engaged in my desired post-graduation market during my 1L year. It was an extremely rewarding experience that literally paid off—I actually gained my 1L summer employment through a connection that I made during GALILEE.

THE EXPERIENCE
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Experiential learning—which includes opportunities at the Notre Dame Clinical Law Center as well as externships, skills courses, and immersion programs—is a core component of the Notre Dame Law School curriculum. These programs complement the analytical training of the classroom by enabling
students to develop practical skills, explore potential career paths, and observe how the justice system functions. Notre Dame Law School offers a wide variety of experiential learning opportunities on campus, in the greater South Bend community, and in cities such as Chicago, Washington, D.C., and London.

THE EXPERIENCE
EXTERNSHIPS The various experiential
learning opportunities at Notre Dame truly prepare you for what it’s like to be a lawyer in the real world. I was fortunate to be able to extern in both the US Attorney’s Office and the chambers of a federal district court judge during my 2L year, and I know that these experiences propelled my legal education to the next level. It’s incredible to see the issues you learn about in class translate into real work that you are responsible for and capable of accomplishing. The Notre Dame network is extensive and employers want to host ND externs. Take advantage of these great externship opportunities because they will be some of the most memorable you encounter, as well as the most rewarding.

The London Program was the highlight of my time at Notre Dame Law School. It was an experience that provided a unique perspective on both the law generally and the legal market for American lawyers. The faculty in London are very diverse in their qualifications—such as Americans practicing abroad or British professors with J.D. degrees—which demonstrated the versatility of a J.D. degree. London also afforded me the opportunity to work in the London office of an American firm, helping me to hone what I want to do with my career. The close-knit nature of the program, ability to travel, and being in the heart of London allow for learning opportunities that can’t happen anywhere but at the London Centre.

The Career Development Office does so much more than just give you a template or correct a resume. The people make the difference. They helped me navigate networking opportunities, structure and develop my personal brand, and even craft my interviewing style, which helped me land the Big Law summer associate gig I really wanted. With amazing accuracy, the counselors and staff will help you highlight the best parts of yourself and ease you into the track of success—whatever that may mean to you.
There were plenty of reasons I chose Notre Dame—the academic reputation, the alumni network, and an emphasis on community. I have come to value and appreciate the doors that are opened by saying I attend Notre Dame Law School. With the national recognition and amazing alumni network, this truly is a national law school. I’ve found that you can take your degree anywhere and have a leg up because you are unique and from Notre Dame.

As a ‘Double Domer,’ Notre Dame has been my home for the past four years. For me, the proximity to Chicago, the accomplished professors and supportive alumni network, and the football Saturdays were reasons enough to choose Notre Dame Law School. But those reasons for choosing NDLS could also be said of countless universities. You won’t really know ‘why Notre Dame’ until you step onto campus. And I promise, as soon as you do, you will feel how incredibly special this place is. I am so lucky to be pursuing my legal education here at Notre Dame as I learn how to become a ‘Different Kind of Lawyer.’ There is nowhere else I would rather call home.
