1. THINK ABOUT THE GOALS AND PURPOSE OF THE PRESENTATION HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• The goals and purpose should serve as your guide as you create and use your Powerpoint.
• Your powerpoint should ultimately enhance the effect of your presentation
2. DO NOT OVERWHELM YOUR AUDIENCE HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Minimize number of slides
• Tackle one thing at a time
• Rule of thumb: No more than 8 lines per slide
• NO PARAGRAPHS
• Only show the essential and what needs emphasis
3. MIX IT UPHTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Use varying forms of media (videos, sound clips, pictures)
• Have a hook to reel in audience
• Use different effects but make sure that it helps the presentation, not distracts from it.
4. TIME YOUR PRESENTATIONHTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Make sure the flow of your Powerpoint is in sync with the presentation as a whole
• Avoid showing slides that you have yet to discuss
• Avoid staying in slides that you are already done with
5. MAKE SLIDES READABLE AND VIEWABLE HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Use contrasting colors when it comes to text and background colors
• Avoid hard to read fonts
• Make sure images can be seen in contrast to the background
• As much as possible, make sure video clips are of high quality
• Avoid clutter
6. MAKE IT INTERACTIVE
• Make audience anticipate information on the next slides
• Include questions on slides plus a moment for them to think it over
• Use powerpoint for a fun Q&A
• Use hyperlinks creatively
7. DON’T PARROT THE POWERPOINT HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Don’t put everything in the powerpoint
• If your audience can learn everything they need to know by simply reading your powerpoint, you are doing it wrong
• Powerpoint is only a tool designed to increase effectivebess of presentation
8. KNOW THE LIMITATIONS OF POWERPOINT HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
Powerpoint is not effective when:
• Distributing large amounts of information
• Non-linear learning paths
• Immediate feedback is required
9. MINIMIZE COMPUTER INTERACTION HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Moving the cursor around can be very distracting
• Hide the cursor
• Interacting with the computer during a presentation could break the flow of the presentation
• Invest in a remote “clicker” or a wireless mouse can do the trick
10. DO NOT TURN OFF ALL THE LIGHTS HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Your audience cannot take notes if they want to
• It can encourage behavior other than paying attention to your presentation
• It can induce sleepiness
11. YOU ARE THE STAR HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Do not let the powerpoint center stage
• The powerpoint should only serve as a guide and provide emphasis
• The bulk of giving out information should be on you
12. MAKE SURE YOUR POWERPOINT HAS A LOGICAL FLOW HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Attentive audience will find it distracting if your powerpoint does not have a logical flow
• Your listeners might be annoyed rather than informed
• It shows lack of preparation
• Prepare your powerpoint way before you need it, not 5 minutes before
13. DON’T USE A SLIDE WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE TO HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Use black screens
• Use slides only to highlight important information
• This avoids overwhelming the audience and keeps the focus on you
13. GIVE OUT HANDOUTS HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Announce that handouts will be provided only after the presentation
• This will keep the audience attentive knowing that they don’t have to copy everything
• Only give out the handouts after in order not to preempt the audience to your presentation
14. PRACTICE SPEAKING WITHOUT A POWERPOINT HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• Develops your speaking skills
• Helps keep focus on you
• Avoids breaking the 7th tip
• Removes dependence from the powerpoint
15. AVOID CLICHES HTTP://EGLOBIOTRAINING.COM/
• This would make your powerpoint very boring and cheesy
• Avoid clipart and stock photos
• Minimize use of animation
