Objective: To define requirements for the technical design,

the deployment, and the maintenance of the EGDI taking into account: ◦ User requirements defined with stakeholders

consultation, ◦ Interoperability principles defined by INSPIRE,

GEOSS ◦ Experience from previous and ongoing projects

OneGeology-Europe ProMine EuroGeoSource (next presentation by Stephan Gruijters, TNO)

To deliver a pan-European geological map buit on-the-fly with national maps

2008-2010 Funded by EC DG Information Society and

Media (eContent Plus programme) 29 partners, 20 European countries involved

(20 Geological surveys) 2013: 13 more countries are joining

To provide the European geological map To create « your own map » : ◦ E.g. a map with all gravels in yellow

To compute statistics on geological units

These results are delivered on-the-fly, requesting several WMS or WFS, using the same data model (a profile on the GeoSciML standard), and with harmonisation of type and age of rocks.

For a selected area, number of units by type of rocks

A first proposal was to use the GEOSS Framework : In line with ISO/OGC and INSPIRE technical principles Result of work of many organisations involved for many years Well documented Open enough to accept new elements and new providers

EGDI design must include INSPIRE requirements but more: ◦ Not all data/services providers have to be INSPIRE

compliant: to get them on board EGDI must accept other « formats »

◦ To be connected to RI, as EPOS (e.g. might use CERIF for metadata)

Harmonisation could be done at two levels: 1. At the « raw » data level 2. At the product level

According to the use cases one or the other is more relevant

More questions than answers!

Answers will depend on user requirements, currently established

But already some proposals from INSPIRE/GEOSS architectures, and our experience from projects (OneGeology-Euope, ProMine, EuroGeoSource, …)
