Stem-Changing Verbs

• Some verbs change from u to ue like in jugar

• Some verbs change from e to ie like in tener and venir

• With u to ue, only the 1st and 2nd person plural do not change from u to ue

• With e to ie, the 1st person singular and plural and 2nd person plural do not change from e to ie

Stem-Changing Verbs Examples

Jugar- to play• juego • juegas• juega

• Tener- to have• tengo• tienes• tiene

Venir is conjugated the same way as tener except with a v instead of a t and –imos instead of -emos

• tenemos

• tenéis• tienen

Irregular Verbs

• Ir- to go• voy• vas• va

• As you can see, ir changes to a v when it is conjugated.

• vamos • vais• van

• There is no accent on the second person plural.

Irregulars

• Ser- to be• soy • eres• es

• The 2nd and 3rd person singular begin with an e.

• somos • sois• son

• There is no accent on the 2nd person plural.

• Ver- to see• veo• ves• ve

• 1st person ending is “eo”, not “o”.

Irregulars

• Some irregular verbs change only in the 1st person singular forms of the present tense like:

• estar

• hacer

• saber

• salir

Examples

• Estar in the 1st person singular is estoy and has accents on all of the forms except for 1st person singular and plural

• Hacer is hago in the 1st person singular

• Saber is sé in the 1st person singular

• Salir in the 1st person singular is salgo
