The First Route

8 kilometres long

The opening of Thisio-

Piraeus line on February

27th, 1869

Locomotive train & 9 coaches

First locomotive named after

Queen Olga

The company did not have

profit

It was sold to the European

Bank of Credence in 1875

New locomotives were bought

Coaches were produced

The line was extended

In 1895 the line is connected with

Omonia station in the city centre

In 1904, the electrification

begins (Opening on September

16th)

Thanks to the railway…

The sea was more easily

reachable

Faliro was developed,

especially in summer

Opening of the new

Omonia underground

station

In 1938, the locomotive

(year of creation: 1885)

which connected Athens

with Kifissia stops being

used

In 1994, during Occupation,

the Railway and its factory

in Piraeus were damaged by

British bombing

In 1957 the network is finished

The stations in-between are

constructed

The railway reaches Kifissia

The biggest part of the rails are overground

Only 3,2 km are underground

In 2000, the company “Attiko Metro” is established

Two more lines were added

Almost every part of them is underground

The metro extension is being continued nowadays

In 2004, the operation of 3

tram lines started, resulting in

the transport’s expansion in

the city of Athens
