Electric Vehicle Infrastructure:
Electric vehicle infrastructure includes the charging equipments which are necessary to charge the battery of the
vehicle which acts as the fuel for its movement. The charging infrastructure of electric vehicles when connected
with the vehicle it recharges the battery with electrical energy by the flow of current. The charging equipments
can be installed at home, offices, buildings and at highways where there is supply of electricity which can be fed
into the vehicle.
The electric vehicle chargers are of alternating current and direct current types and those are categorised based
on charging power levels which decides the rate and quantum of charge to the vehicles’ battery.
Types of Chargers:
AC (Level 1) – It uses the current level which is available at home and the level 1 chargers can be connected
with the electric supply and any electrical infrastructure upgrade is not required. It can charge up to 1.92 Kilo
Watt(KW) from a 120 Volt supply and the power consumption is approximately to that of a toaster.
AC (Level 2) – This type of chargers uses 208 or 240 volt supply of electricity and charges the battery faster
than level 1 chargers and installation of these require installation by a qualified electrician. The power supplied
by level 2 chargers is up to 19.2 KW.
DC (Level 3) – This type of chargers are used for fast charging of electric vehicles and they can supply power up
to 100 KW. The installation of level 3 chargers require dedicated socket and connectors which can supply direct
current up to 480 Volts.

Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Market Set to Grow at CAGR 27% till 2021
Rising adoption of electric vehicles and increasing government focus on reducing carbon emissions to drive global electricvehicle infrastructure market through 2021
According to TechSci Research report “Global Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Market By Type, By Installed Location, ByRegion, Competition Forecast and Opportunities, 2011 - 2021”, the global market for electric vehicle infrastructure isprojected to grow at a CAGR of over 27% during 2016-2021, on account of increasing electric vehicle fleet size andimplementation of stringent regulations by local governments to promote use of electric vehicles in the transportation sector.Rising concerns over Increasing pollution from the transportation sector and depleting natural resources is leading toadoption of policies that discourage use of conventional vehicles and promote the use electric vehicles, which is in turnanticipated to bolster growth in global electric vehicle infrastructure market during 2016-2021. Global sales of electricvehicles are forecast to reach 3.86 million units by 2020, up from 1.37 million units in 2012.
In 2013, the transport sector accounted for a share of 23% in the overall global carbon dioxide emissions. Increasingpenetration of electric vehicles in the transport sector is projected to reduce pollution and lower dependence onconventional fuels. Consequently, with increasing use of electric vehicles across the globe, global electric vehicleinfrastructure market is projected to witness an upsurge in the forecast period. Furthermore, incentives and subsidies offeredby local governments and deployment of rapid charging infrastructure for quick charging of electric vehicles is projected toincrease adoption of these vehicles and related charging infrastructure across commercial and residential sectors. In order topromote the use of electric vehicles, governments across the globe are focusing on the development of robust charginginfrastructure.
“Demand Response Program, conducted by electric utilities, is projected to fuel growth in the global electric vehicleinfrastructure market during the forecast period. This program enables electric vehicle owners to feed electricity back to thegrid, thereby helping owners reduce total cost of ownership of electric vehicles. Demand Response Program aims atmanaging load profile of electricity grid, with electric vehicle owners being able to manage their consumption and also feedpower back to the grid.” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a research based globalmanagement consulting firm.
