How to Apply
Following are the basic steps of the Application
Process:
1. Complete an Application Request Form and
return it to the JATC with your $25 application
fee. Request forms are available in-person at the
JATC (Monday through Friday from 9AM to 2PM) ,
or on our website: www.mplsjatc.org.
2. Submit required documentation within the 30
day deadline.
3. Take the scheduled Aptitude Test (basic math
and reading) and pass with a score of 4 or higher.
4. Complete an oral interview with the Joint
Apprenticeship & Training Committee. The
interview score places applicants into our pool of
eligibility. When we go into a hiring mode, we
hire those in the eligibility pool who scored the
highest in their interview.
Application Deadlines
Aptitude Tests and Interviews are held on a quarterly
basis at the JATC. To be eligible for a specific test
date, an applicant must turn in a completed Main
Application Packet by the corresponding deadline. All
other documents must be turned in before the 30 day
deadline from the original application date.

Commercial Apprenticeship
The Minneapolis Electrical JATC Commercial
Apprenticeship is a five year program sponsored
jointly by the International Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers (IBEW) Local 292 and the Minneapolis
Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors
Association (NECA). The program is registered
through the Minnesota Department of Labor and
Industry and consists of two components of training:
On-The-Job Training is completed by the Apprentice
working out in the field with our contractors, and
Related Training is completed through classroom and
lab education. The Apprenticeship will prepare you for
a lifelong career in the Electrical Industry as an IBEW
Journeyman Electrician.
Earn While You Learn Apprentices work full-time with their contractors
during the summer months, and four days a week
during the school year, September to May. See
column at far right for a breakdown of the wages and
benefits you can expect as an Apprentice.
Wages & Benefits
New Apprentices without prior experience or trade
school start at 1st period pay. Those with documented
work experience or a Minnesota accredited electrical
trade school degree are eligible to start at 2nd period
or higher.

Related Classroom Training From September to May of each year, Apprentices
spend one day per week at the JATC in St. Michael
attending Related Training classes. These classes
cover a wide range of topics in both lecture and lab
settings, and give Apprentices the skills they need to
pass their Journeyman Exam with the MN
Department of Labor and Industry, and to be
successful electricians out in the field.
