Axis

• Chairs as they are supposed to design do not have an axis of symmetry

• Round top sitting stools have an axis of symmetry

• Modern high stools have a back rest which makes them a chair- stool hybrid.

• They have an axis of symmetry if the back rest is not considered.

Symmetry

• Symmetry plays an important role in the design of a chair

• A chair is designed to support a human body which has a linear symmetry

• Chairs which are designed to fit the ergonomics of a human hence need to be symmetric.

• The picture shows a chair which not only has physically symmetric elements but the print on the seat is also symmetric to go well with the chair

Balance

• Balance is an important attribute in the elegance of the object

• Chairs which have an elegant and a royal look often employ the concepts of balance to make them look majestic.

Repetition

• The Design of chairs sometimes has its charm in a group of other such chairs.

• A group of chairs has a repetition and uniformity in the entire system

• It makes the group look uniform and ordered

Rhythm

• A single chair may be monotonic but the arrangement of chairs can bring out rhythm in a system

• Here the alternating between presence and absence of chairs in regular interval creates rhythm

• The colour scheme of the chairs also forms a rhythm

Variety• Some places need to be made

interesting• Variety fuels enthusiasm in a person• A variety of chairs, stools and sofas

in a living space make it more interesting.

• Use of analogous colours also facilitates this in the given case.

Monotony

• Some places need to be designed which take less attention of the people so that they can focus on other people while using those spaces.

• Monotony creates a sense of uniformity and remains less distraction for the users of the space

• It provides a scope to the user of the space to either completely neglect the furniture and focus on people or spend time appreciating the uniformity and detailings in the room

Contrast• Contrast is a tool that bring out opposing

qualities in an object• The chairs have contrast in colour of the

wood and the mattress used• This creates the impression of the

mattress being soft and comfortable since the colour contrasts with that of wood which is a very hard and rigid material

Harmony• Harmony is a quality brought out in

a system• A set of a dinning table and dinning

chairs is a perfect example of this• The group of chairs interact

harmoniously with the table, the environment and even themselves in order to bring out the charm of the room

Hierarchy

• Hierarchy is a tool to create dominance• A chair designed with attributes of hierarchy makes it the

most dominating furniture of the room• It gives it a royal vive and the person sitting on it a kingly

feeling• Such chairs out weigh the other furniture in a room
