Understanding the different applications of photography

By Eli Doherty

In this short essay I will be explaining the different applications of photography.

Advertising & Promoting:

The first point to talk about would be advertising. As you all know photographs are used all the time to advertise products and places. Advertising is basically when you showcase something you want to promote so taking a photograph of the product is one of the fasted and best ways possible. This also ties into the next point; promotional. Promoting is basically another word for advertising which makes them the same in that sense.

Fashion:

Fashion is another massive part of the photography world. When designers and clothing companies want to show possible customers their clothes they hire photographers to take photos of models wearing said clothes. This is a great way for the companies to sell their products to their customers.

Photojournalism:

As stated in the photojournalism also relies on photography to get its stories across to their audiences. Photojournalism is mainly seen in magazines to show things like celebrities and natural disasters.

Portraitures:

Portraitures are one of the biggest markets for photography. People hire photographers all the time to take portraits at things like

weddings, communions and sporting events. This is also where a lot of photographers start their careers.

High street studio work:

High street studio work is when a photographer “sets up shop” and creates their own studio space in order to have a controlled environment to take photos in. These studios are usually used for things like fashion photography and portraits.

Architectural:

Architectural photography is one of my favourite applications of photography. Architectural photography is the act of taking photos of buildings and architecture in general. It isn’t as popular as things like fashion and portraits but it is very interesting.

Medical Photography:

Medical Photography is a specialized area of photography that concerns itself with the documentation of the clinical presentation of patients, medical and surgical procedures, medical devices and specimens from autopsy. It is used in most medical facilities.

Photo illustration:

Photo illustration is a type of computer art that begins with a digitized photograph. Using special image enhancement software, the artist can then apply a variety of special effects to transform the photo into a work of art. You mainly see these types of photos in things like manuals or picture books.

Fine art:

Fine art photography s when the photographer has in image in his/her head of what the finished product will look like. They then

develop an idea, a message or an emotion to go along with the photo. Fine art photography is about making a statement with beautiful photos that could serve as picture hung from your wall like art.

Documentary:

Documentary photography is a style of photography that provides a straightforward and accurate representation of people, places, objects and events, and is often used in reportage.

Magazines:

Magazines showcase photography all the time whether it be for the latest fashion trends or the sneaky celebrity scoops. Magazines are one of the main showcases of photography.

Newspapers:

Newspapers also showcase photography all the time but the subject matters of the front page are always a lot darker than those of a magazine. They showcase photography of things like natural disasters or convicted murderers.

Hoardings:

Hoardings or billboards also use photography a lot. Hoardings are usually designed to promote products for things like cars, movies and fashion.

Books:

Books use photography a lot for their front covers and internal photos. The authors of the books would hire photographers to take specific photos relating to the book.

Web pages:

Web pages’ use photography for things like page banners and photos relating to texts. Web designers would often pay for photographs to be taken for their specific jobs i.e. page banner.

Individual:

Individual clients also hire photographers a lot for personalised photos of things like weddings first communions, confirmations and other miscellaneous jobs.

CD ROM:

Cds particularly of the music genre always tend to sport some sort of cover on them whether it be graphic design or in this case photography. Musicians would hire photographers to take specific images related to their album to use on the cd covers.

Galleries:

The last thing would be galleries which are used all the time for showcasing art and photography. Galleries allow people to enter and view all of the photography showcased and to perhaps buy specific works of photography funding the photographer who took them.
