CHARLES I

• 19.11.1600 – 30.01.1649• King of England, Scotland,

Ireland• Was executed in 1649• Was the second son of

James VI of Scotland (or James I of England)

• His successor was his eldest son Charles II

• Married to a Roman Catholic princess (they had 9 children)

CHILDHOOD

• Physically ill• A weak and sickly

infant• Not as strong as his

siblings, couldn’t move to England with them at once• Was the Duke of York

• Interfered with English and Scottish churches

• Struggle for power with the English Parliament

• His reign was marked by religious conflicts

• Attempted to force religious reforms upon Scotland

• Levying of taxes without parliamentary approval

• Overruled, negated parliamentary authority

THE CIVIL WAR

• Charles fought the English and Scottish parliaments• Charles lost both

First and the Second war• In 1649 he was

captured and executed

THE FIRST CIVIL WAR (1642-45)

• Royalists against the parliamentarian army• Charles was

defeated• The Battle of

Naseby

THE SECOND CIVIL WAR

• Was provoked by the king’s attempt to make an alliance with Scotland and his escape to the Isle of Wight.• King was defeated

again.• Monarchy was put to an

end and the Commonwealth of England was established.
