Put off, look up to, take in, grew up, break out, get out of, turn down…

Normally there is ONE word that has the same meaning and is used in formal writing.

Examples: put off – postpone, go up- increase.

Examples: Do away with : Abolish – colloquial

Murder – colloquial

Miss (something) out : Fail to include Lose a chance – colloquial

Object: before or after the particle Example: We did our bathroom up last year We did up our bathroom last year.

Object=pronoun it must go between the two parts of the verb. Example: We did it up by ourselves.

Some verbs can only take the object AFTER the particle. With these the pronoun also follows the second part of the verb. Example: She has fallen for the boy who lives next door. Fortunately, he has also fallen for her.

Normally the meaning isn't obvious from the meaning of its component.

It´s better to learn them as individual items.
