EMBEDDED, CLOUD, MOBILE:
THE FUTURE OF AUTOMATION

Embedded
Intelligence and connectivity increasingly are
embedded in the field device. Everything is
getting smarter. “Internet of Things”
becomes real.
Cloud
Smart devices serve lots of data that must
be stored somewhere secure and
accessible. Analytics and visualization
become essential.
Mobile
We’re wearing more technology than we
once had on our desktop.
Embedded
More things are connecting to the Internet
than people — over 12.5 billion devices in
2010 alone. Cisco’s Internet Business
Solutions Group (IBSG) predicts some 25
billion devices will be connected by 2015,
and 50 billion by 2020.
Embedded
20 percent of computers will learn not just
process in 2017.
Embedded
By 2020, one in three knowledge workers
will be replaced by enterprise owned smart
machines they trained.
Embedded
The Internet of things will create economic
value for all organizations and sectors and
create an additional $1.9 trillion for the
economy by 2020.
Embedded
Changes in MEMS manufacturing will drive
the equipment & materials market from
$378M to $512M for equipment and $136M
to $248M for materials between 2012-2018
Embedded
3D printing will revolutionize the supply
chain.
Cloud
• By 2017, 65 percent of data center capacity
will be private, down from 80 percent today.
Enterprises aren't going cloud happy en
masse.
Cloud
In two years, the combined IT and telecom
market will hit almost $4 trillion, or 5
percent of global GDP. A believable statistic
— someone has to network the Internet of
things.
Cloud
Forrester Research predicts that the global
cloud computing market will go from $40.7
billion in 2011 to $241 billion in 2020.
Cloud
• CIBC, a Canadian bank, predicts that
information-generation growth will increase
50 times over the next decade. IDC, a
market research firm, similarly forecasts a
44-fold increase in data volumes between
2009 and 2020.
Mobile
Mobile
Location data is an essential component of mobile big data — perhaps the primary data type that differentiates mobile from Web-based big data
Mobile
According to IMS Research, the wearables market is poised to grow from 14 million devices shipped in 2011 to as many as 171 million units shipped by 2016.
In a more recent estimate, ABI Research pegs the wearables market at 485 million annual device shipments by 2018.
Business Insider believe this number is too high because of the uncertainty surrounding eyewear and smartwatches. We see global annual wearable device unit shipments crossing the 100 million milestone in 2014, and reaching 300 million units five years from now.
Mobile
Wearables -- Mobile
• Those betting big on wearable computing believe an assorted new crop of gadgets — mostly worn on the wrist or as eyewear — will transform the way in which we interact with the rest of our devices.
• But wearables won't just complement smartphones. What is perhaps most intriguing about them is that they will serve new purposes too. Because they are designed to be worn close to the body, they're ideal for monitoring our vital signs and health.
