Kickstarter is…

http://www.kickstarter.com/• A fundraising website for artists/inventors

with an emerging idea, without the sufficient funds to make it happen, to reach out to an audience that wants to see it made

• A way for you to join the creator in his/her journey as the project happens

Kickstarter?

In Summary: The whole idea of kickstarter is to get up- and-coming (emerging) projects a start to affect their fields in the future

Kickstarter Numbers/Examples•Kickstarter has funded more than 20,000 creative projects including new technology and inventive art projects since its launch in 2008•As of April 2012, Kickstarter had more than $175 million dollars pledged•17 films that premiered at last month Sundance Film Festival about 10% were partly funded by Kickstarter campaigns•As of April 2012, the Pebble E-Paper Watch is the most funded project on kickstarter raising over $4.7M with 30 days left of the campaign

Why Kickstarter? (Pros)

• People who start projects obtain 100% ownership

• Its not an investment or a loan• Starting a project is free• Spreads the word about your project • Members outline their projects with a

video appeal making it more personal

Kickstarter Cons• Money handling is unclear when you begin to use website• When you ask for funds, its an all or nothing gamble • Possible liability for legal damages from sponsors for

failure to deliver on promises• Projects can also fail even after a successful fund raise

when creators underestimate the total costs required or technical difficulties to be overcome

• Some projects are seen more than others giving some creators a disadvantage

Possible Solutions• Kickstarter could present how the money is legally handled to possible users when first thinking about starting a project on their website

My Ideas/Solutions:

Kickstarter should have their own way to handle/distribute money, thereby getting rid of the additional use of Amazon

Kickstarter should change their website design so that the home page is randomized with projects, showing everyone’s creations to the public
