introduction & Demographic informationThis report reviews the results from the 2014 A.R.E. Employee Compensation & Benefits survey finalized in November 2014. A total of 54 members participated in this survey, providing data on wages and benefits. This report presents detailed analyses of employee compensation, including base salary, commission or bonus, and benefit levels. Data is presented for the typical A.R.E. member, results by line of business, and by company sales volume category.
Explanation of statistiCs
median - This report profiles the median number for all variables and calculations. The median is the middle number of all values reported arrayed from lowest to highest. The median represents the typical company’s results. In comparison to the average or the mean, the median is not influenced by any extremely high or low values reported. Thus, the median is the preferred statistic for this analysis.
Quartile - The word quartile means that something is divided into quarters, or segments of twenty-five percent each. The first quartile is the figure halfway between the median and the lowest performance value. Twenty-five percent of the firms are below this figure and seventy-five percent are above it. The third quartile is the figure between the median and the highest value. Therefore, the values between the first and third quartiles profile the middle fifty percent of the performance statistic. The purpose of showing the first and third quartile values is to show the “range of common experience” in the industry. Where provided, readers can develop an understanding of the variability of the data without having to consider extreme results.
please note that throughout the report, a blank designates data that are not available due to an inadequate sample size for a particular statistic.

Executive Compensation summaryOne of the purposes of the Compensation Survey is to provide compensation data within the store fixture manufacturing and retail design industry that may prove valuable to executives who must prove their compensation is “reasonable” within the constraints of the Internal Revenue Code. In the IRS determination of reasonable compensation for owner-managers, one of the main considerations is that of comparable salaries.
The tables below display base salary, bonus, and total compensation (salary + bonus or commission). Most analysts consider the “Range of Common Experience” from the 25th percentile to 75th percentile data. This range represents the middle 50% of the data reported for each position.
In the bonus section shown below, please note that only 74% of the CEOs reported a bonus.
Many would consider the 90th percentile as the maximum reasonable compensation, which would be allowable to be used as a business expense. Only 10% of the participants reported compensation above this level.
