bullying. Lets quickly summarize what we know.

Facts• 99% of Canadian students use the internet• 50% of students are connected at all times
• 25% of young Canadian internet users say that someone has sent them messages that have said hateful things about others
(Young Canadians in a wired world –MNET survey, 2001)
• 1 in 4 youths, aged 11-19 has been threatened via their computers or cell phones, including death threats. (National Children’s Home – UK, 2002)

Bullying & Cyber Bullying• All kinds of bullying is about power and control
• Cyber bullying can come in the form of threats or gossip and many others but the goal of the individual is to grab hold of a situation, save face or to cover own feeling of inadequacy
• Cyber bullying happens instantly
• For some reason the anonymity makes it almost un-human
• It is a cowardly act…

• How is Cyber Bullying Different from traditional bullying?
What can we do?• Break into groups (Four Corners):
• As a central theme of cyber bullying draw a map of the related elements based on the provided example.
• We will come together and discuss as a group in 10 minutes.

• Only intervene in about 20% of cases
• When they intervene they are successful most of the time
Consequences• Increased Anxiety• Social problems – self isolation • Decreased self-esteem – may affect your whole outlook
on life• May affect your grades• May turn into a serious case of depression or worst• May result in aggressive responses and outbursts
