Write

Tell me about a time when you struggled to fit in. Why did you struggle? What did you do?

New communities?

Many times, we struggle to “fit in” when we are attempting to join new discourse communities (Swales). We need to adjust to the ways that members of discourse communities talk to each other.

Discourse communities

Remember this from ENC 1101?

Swales’ definition of discourse community

has a broadly agreed set of common public goals

has mechanisms of intercommunication among its members

uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback

utilizes and hence possesses one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims

has its own specific lexis (terminology, jargon)

has a threshold level of membership (not anybody can participate)

Basically…

Looking at how community members talk to each other may allow you to communicate (or “fit in”) more effectively.

These methods of communication can be understood as Genres

Genres

Genres?

Write…

What communities are you involved in? do people write in these communities? What do these genres say about the group?

This can go in your reading/research journal. This can be electronic or in a physical notebook. I will collect this periodically throughout the semester.
