Taking
items to Waterloo
School
The Crocheting
Group made hats, gloves, and scarves
throughout the
year. These items were donated to
children at
Waterloo and Custer Schools
prior to Christmas vacation, so no
child went without
this cold winter. In addition, thank
you to Center
members who donated money to
supplement these
items. Hats off for helping the kids!

From the Director’s Desk . . .
We need joy as we need air. We need love as we need water. We need each other as we need the earth we share. We are blessed that there is within our
reach enough of all we need.
~ Maya Angelou
Is it Spring yet?? Hopefully soon. I have seen a couple
robins, so that’s a good sign. But in spite of the snowy,
cold days, we’ve had good attendance at the Center. It’s
so nice to see so many people enjoying the food and each
other’s company.
Thanks to those who completed our annual survey. The
results were mostly quite good, although our satisfaction
rating slipped from 98% in 2016 to 92% in 2018. Please
let us know what we can do better. On the other hand,
positive impact on one’s life improved from 79% to 87%
during this same time period. And 94% stated that they’d
refer the Center to someone else — up from 92% in 2016.
The suggestions that were offered were helpful, as well.
Lots of people were complimentary about our meals, and
many said they appreciated the Health Odysseys and the
exercise classes. A couple people asked us to share our
budget. Please note that the finances are included in the
Annual Report, and the reports are available in my office
at any time. Just stop in. (Donations are always needed.)
Lastly, there were many comments about the Center being
a wonderful place to socialize and meet people. That’s
truly what we’re all about. It is such a great feeling to
witness people having a great time.
Please stop in often for a good meal, activities, or a cup of
coffee. We have some special events that are coming up.
Our St. Patrick’s Day Dinner and Show promises to be
great. I hope that you will join us.
Thanks for making the Center the place to be for fun,
fellowship and support.

March 2018 ENGAGE! · Monroe Center for Healthy Aging 12
From RSVP….
In 1994 The Craft & Hobby Association created the wonderful month we know as craft month. It was
designed to help people rediscover and learn about the wonderful world of crafting and all its many
benefits. Since its humble beginnings, craft month has grown tremendously over the years, from just a
handful of retailers and manufacturers, to now an astounding international celebration of millions of craft
enthusiasts all of them “getting their craft on”. In honor of national craft month, I wanted to share a fun
and budget friendly Easter craft I found. Easter is Sunday, April 1st.
To see how to make this Easter Wreath, keep reading:
Instructions:
∙ Start by creating your form. I just cut out a big cardboard circle, but you could certainly use an
actual wreath form too (most dollar stores sell wreath forms).
∙ Mix together green and pink crinkle paper (or whichever colors you like!) I used Easter basket
filling.
∙ Take your hot glue gun (regular glue works fine too but just takes longer to dry) and go around the
board gluing on small handfuls of the paper at a time. Press the paper into the glue so it sticks
well.
∙ After the glue sets, go around it and run your fingers through the paper. Then shake the whole
wreath around a bit. This should loosen any papers that did not glue down. Fill in any bald spots
you find and then give your wreath a trim if it needs it.
∙ Glue on some Easter egg ornaments (cut the string off) or just use plastic Easter eggs if you would
like.
∙ Finish with a bow from the dollar store or some ribbon tied into a bow.
Craft Month Source: https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-craft-month-march/
Wreath Tutorial Source: http://thebusybroad.blogspot.com/2012/03/easter-egg-wreath.html
Materials Needed:
-Piece of flat cardboard or wreath form
-Colored crinkle paper or Easter basket filling
-Plastic Easter eggs or Easter egg ornaments
-Hot glue gun or any other form of liquid glue
- Bow or ribbon
-Scissors

March 2018 ENGAGE! · Monroe Center for Healthy Aging 13
From the Program Manager…. Were you one of the 103.4 million people who watched the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 4? It was an
exciting game, as the Philadelphia Eagles topped the New England Patriots to be crowned the champs. In the
end, a back-up quarterback, who almost quit football two years
ago, beat Michigan grad Tom Brady, who is considered by many
to be the greatest QB of all time.
I have been impressed as I watched Nick Foles lead his team over
the last two months. He acknowledged that past failures have put
him in the right place right now to be successful. He gave thanks
to God at every opportunity. He called his baby daughter, who
shared his Super Bowl victory with him, “his rock.” And after
football, he plans to become a minister, to share the word with others. I was impressed, but wondered how a
person of deep faith fit into the world of professional sports.
It turns out that the Philadelphia Eagles are considered one of the most religious teams in football, from the
coaches down to the players. Along with lifting weights and football practice, Bible study, chapel, and prayer
are part of their regular routine. They pray before the game. They pray with the opposing team after a game.
Some of the players stated that football is their platform to draw people to Jesus. Their Super Bowl victory
was a chance to give all Glory to God. In the world of professional sports, where fame and money can be the
only goals, I find this team’s culture to be a breath of fresh air. They really get what is important in life.
Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles! You have earned this moment.
We have had a wild winter so far. Spring temperatures one day, 7 inches of snow the next day. Some days, I
don’t know whether to run the furnace or the air conditioner in my house! Quite a few of us have been getting
a good cardio workout every day by shoveling snow, scraping off our cars, and salting our walks. And now
we just had another storm with 8 inches of snow. Aaack! We have to keep telling ourselves that spring is
coming, and I can prove it: the Detroit Tigers home opener is Thursday, March 29! If baseball season is
around the corner, then so is spring, and then summer! Don’t stop believing!
Stay warm and safe. See you at the Center! Karen
