Engaging industry through R&D partnerships

LI HengChair Professor of Construction InformaticsConstruction Virtual Prototyping Laboratory

Department of Building and Real Estate

Why we need to engage industrial partners?

The pool of research funds from the HK Government has been drying;Current Application-Fund-Research model is not sustainable;HK has a healthy construction industry;Industrial partners can provide research funds, research problems and testbed of results.

How did we engage industrial partners?

We identified a few mature technologies developed by us which were ready for applications;We have a sexy slogan: no charge if our technology does not bring any economic benefits to the partners;The first case of working with a partner was always crucial.

Useful Tips

Large corporations are more willing to fund R&D projects;Ask for a small amount of funds first to conduct a trial project in order to get them hooked;

Listen carefully to the Industrial Partner to find out what are their expectations;Think and act like a practitioner, ie, don’t say it is free, we only need to get some data to publish a paper, etc.Don’t do free work!

“Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”
