Withallofthatsaid,let’sgettowhereIseeourfocusneedingtobe.Our goals are numerous and range from the protection of publichealth, safety andwelfare, to promoting engineering competence, tostimulatingthegrowthandrespectofourgreatprofession.Inordertohelpusachievethesegoals,TSPEhasseveralcommitteeswhosedutyit is to not only keep us from forgetting our priorities but to comeupwithnewstrategiesofattack.ServingasPresident-Electduringthepastyearhasgivenmetheopportunitytoalsoserveas theChair fortheSocietyDevelopmentCommittee.Soforstarters,I’dliketofocusonanissuethatmyeyeshavebeenopenedtooflate...theimportance ofmembership.

In February 2000,TSPE, ACEC, ASCE,ASHRAE,IEEE,andSAMEhadadreamto stimulate the interest of young peopleinmathandscienceandhelpdevelop21stcentury engineers.We launched a capitalcampaigntoraiseover$1.8milliontobuildtheTennesseeEngineeringCenter (TEC),whichisanadditiontoAdventureScience

Center. The TEC includes a large meeting space, offices for TSPEandACECofTN,anarchiveareafortheengineeringassociations,aconferenceroom,andanengineeringexhibittoeducateyoungpeoplevisitingAdventureScienceCenter.

Tenyearsago,inJune2002,thedreambecamearealityandwemovedourofficesintothenewspace,engineeringassociationsstartedhavingboardmeetingsintheconferenceroomandlunchmeetingsinwhatisnowcalledJackWoodHall.AdventureScienceCenterhasbecomeafavoriteplaceformeetingsbecauseofitswelcomingenvironmentandspaceavailability.

Thecombinedeffortsofthesixengineeringassociationsalsoincreasedcommunicationandcollaborationamongthemtothepointthat,today,

ACECandTSPEhavejoinedforceswiththeAmericanSocietyofCivilEngineerstohaveanannualmeetingtogether.

Committeesof the threegroups areplanninga funmeetingwith aninterestingscheduleofeducationsessions.Therewillbefourdifferentengineering tracks: civil, environmental and structural; geotechnical;transportationandengineeringmanagement;andelectrical,mechanicalandindustrial.

TheTennesseeEngineeringFoundation(TEF)was created in1986 to advance and supporttheengineeringprofessioninTennessee.TEFraises funds for scholarships and otherK-12STEM education support activities suchas MATHCOUNTS – the primary sourceof funding for these initiatives is the TEFLuncheon,whichwillbeonSeptember13.

The TEF is a charitable, educational, andscientific organization (501(c)(3) andcontributions are deductible to the extentallowedbylaw.

Wehopethatyouwillplantoattendthisyear’sluncheon. Informationonpurchasing ticketsisincludedontheenclosedbrochure.

In 2011-12, the TEF awarded scholarshipsto three engineering students because of asuccessful fundraising luncheon in August2011atwhichTDOTCommissionerSchroerwasthekeynotespeaker.
