Skimming & Scanning

Skimming

To get a general idea of the text.

• You do not read every word. • Look at Chapter Headings and

Sub Headings• First and Last Paragraphs,

Illustrations, Diagrams and the text beneath them etc.

Scanning

To search quickly for particular information – a name, a date or an event

• Run your eyes quickly over the page or

• Follow your finger down the middle of the text.

• Look for key words and clues to help you find what you are looking for.

CloseReading

To read for overall understanding.

Read carefully to get a strong understanding of the material – look at topic sentences to identify main points in a paragraph, think over the points made and language used to help you show good overall understanding in response to questions and in essays.
