CLAIM SUMMARY & EVIDENCE REACTION

Thoreau claims that government that governs least is best. (Government should stay out of all my business.)

Thoreau explains why government is bad. It is bad because it is corrupt and “perverted” and doesn’t take the people’s opinions into consideration. His evidence is that the engagement in Mexican war is because of only a few people in government.

I agree with Thoreau that government shouldn’t be all up my business. However, government is necessary, even if I don’t always agree with the things they do. It is necessary to maintain order.

CLAIM SUMMARY & EVIDENCE

REACTION

The government can only restrict an individual’s body, not his way of thinking.

Thoreau goes to jail for not paying a tax that was used to support the Mexican War. He describes his experience in jail and claims that government can’t really punish him because they can’t get to his conscience. They only punish his body by physically restraining him from leaving a room. He realizes that even though he is in jail, he is freer than the rest of the community who blindly abide by government’s laws.

While it is true that the government cannot make me think a certain way, I consider being in jail punishment enough.
