SWBAT:

Construct an effective introduction and conclusion paragraph

Use academic vocabulary

Today, the focus will be on… Introduction

Grabber Bridge Thesis

And… Conclusion

Grabber:

What makes a good grabber? Catches the reader’s attention. Try out a new grabber- if you always do a

quote, try a personal story. NO QUESTIONS ALLOWED. (No questions in

your whole essay allowed really, but not in your grabber either)

Bridge:

Which of the following two grabber/bridge combos is better?

Option 1: Martin Luther King said, “We must learn to live together as brothers or we will perish together as fools.” A lot of people think that gangsters are horrible people that should be locked up, but this is just a stereotype.

Option 2: Martin Luther King said, “We must learn to live together as brothers or we will perish together as fools.” Martin Luther King’s wisdom of 60 years ago still holds true today, as in Tattoos on the Heart, Father Greg Boyle breaks the stereotype that gangsters are horrible people that should be locked up.

In your bridge, make sure you…

1) Introduce the title of the book and the author (Tattoos on the Heart by Father Greg Boyle)

2) Draw some kind of connection between your grabber and what you’re talking about (why did you use that grabber? How does it relate?

Thesis

You’ve got this down, right? But just as a reminder, it comes at the end of your intro.

Conclusion Paragraph…

Re-state your thesis Re-emphasize any points you wanted to

make NO NEW INFO/EXAMPLES Tie it back to your hook if you can.

Vocab Quiz 3!

When you are finished,1) Turn it into the bin up front2) Work on your rough drafts– they’re due

TUESDAY! You should have a completely finished rough draft– all paragraphs completed. Grammar/spelling might be rough, but everything else should be fleshed out.

HW:

Finish rough drafts. Read your outside book for 10-15

minutes every day.

Exit:

Tell me one thing you should do in your bridge.
