TYPES OF ENGLISH SYLLABLE

FOUR TYPES

TYPE 1 – OPEN SYLLABLETYPE 2 - CLOSED SYLLABLETYPE 3 - r- CONTROLLED SYLLABLE TYPE 4 - re - CONTROLLED SYLLABLE

2 types of open syllable:

• Absolute: me, by, no;

• Traditional with the final vowel letter e which is silent: make, these, code.

SPECIAL CASES OF VOWELS: TYPE 1 READING

SYLLABLE DIVISION OF THE WORDS BEGINNING WITH TYPE 3 SYLLABLE

When the first syllable ending in –r is followed by another consonant divide between them:

• German - Ger-man• Surplus - sur-plus• Larger - lar-ger• Barrack - bar-rack• Stirrup - stir-rup

SYLLABLE DIVISION OF THE WORDS BEGINNING WITH TYPE 4 SYLLABLE

When the first syllable ending in –r is followed by another vowel, divide before the letter r according to the rule: Ma-ry, sta-ring, soa-ring. Although the letter r graphically belongs to the second syllable, it marks Type 4 syllable and sound as /r /.

VOWEL DIAGRAPHS

A diagraph: a combination of two letters representing one sound.Vowel diagraphs: ee, ea, ei, ay, ai, etc. Consonant diagraphs: th, ch, sh, ph, kn, gn etc. Mixed diagraphs: qu
