WELCOME TO CURRICULUM NIGHT

English/Language Arts Block

Objectives of Language Arts

Enhancing Language Arts Skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

Implementing the 2010 English/Language Arts Standards (ELAS)

Why Common Core Standards?

Preparation: The standards are college and career ready. They will help prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in education and training after high school.

Competition: The standards are internationally benchmarked. Common standards will help insure our students are globally competitive

Equity: Expectations are consistent for all- and not dependent on a student’s zip code

Clarity: The standards are focused, coherent, and clear. Clearer standards help students (and parents and teachers) understand what is expected of them.

Collaboration: The standards create a foundation to work collaboratively across states and districts, pooling resources and expertise, to create curricular tools, professional development, common assessments, and other materials.

What is Language Arts?

All 7th and 8th grade students are enrolled in a Language Arts Block.

Students will receive about 70 minutes each school day focused on enhancing and strengthening reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

Students will be analyzing fiction and non-fiction passages, writing assignments will accompany these passages.
