Key Interlock System
Dust collecting efficiency is the main concern when it comes to ESP that sometimes site/
operation safety issues are overlooked, jeopardizing life and resources. As your partner in ESP
solution, we see the importance of safety system that can prevent related accident and protect
workers’ life as well. Due to ESP is a high voltage equipment, it is highly
recommended that the plant personnel follow safety
procedures when entering the ESP to eliminate the risk of
injury. Therefore, the importance of key interlock system is
recommended to be emphasized and implemented.
What is key interlock system?
Key interlock system is an equipment to help make sure
that all electrical sources are turned off and grounded
before entering ESP to prevent potential electrical shock
or any undesired hazards from high voltage in order to
protect mechanical and electrical equipment from being
damaged and to ultimately provide safety working
environment for the plant’s personnel.
What are the functions of key interlock system?
Key interlock system requires users to follow safety procedure step by step, ensuring that a correct
sequential procedure is followed for switching-off and earthing the ESP.
Where are the key interlock system located in ESP?
Key interlock system include keys, which are available in different profiles, and an exchange box. Key
interlocks on ESP are usually installed on 3 main locations - HV control panel, transformers and access
doors.

T ai & Chyun received the 1st CP replacement turnkey
project from one of the steel plants in Malaysia for installing at
the 1st field of the ESP, where there was an ESP explosion
accident in 2013. Accordingly, due to limited outage duration of
end user, Tai & Chyun decided to divide the installation period
into two phases and to work 24 hour shifts a day in order to
comply with end user’s outage constraint. The 1st installation
was done in August, 2017, while the rest will be installed in
November, 2017 with an aim to bring back ESP normal
operation.

Turn off the main breaker & take out the operation keys
Go to ESP’s rooftop, plug in the operation keys into all the earthing's switches of T/R set
Switch T/R’s earthing switch to “Grounding”
Take out the other keys on the T/R set’s earthing switch
Plug in the keys into the key box on top of ESP in order to take out the interlock keys to open
the access doors
The access door latch will loosen, then open the manhole

One of government owned power plants in Thailand with
power capacity of 1,434 MW (2 x 717 MW) wishes to retrofit all
the controllers for the ESPs in the plant. The plant has 2 units
of ESPs, in which each unit consists of 16 fields. Tai & Chyun
was awarded a contract to supply 32 sets of controllers in total
with installation supervision to replace the old controllers for
better and reliable operation.

Application
Raw mill, cooler & lignite mill ESP at cement plant in Thailand
Problem
Since safety concern is the major priority of the plant, and ESP is regarded as a key device that
applies high voltage to collect dust particles, which can cause a serious risk to human life; therefore, it
is necessary for the plant to ensure safety control among plant’s personnel, while they are operating
the ESP.
Solution
Tai & Chyun was awarded a contract to supply 10 sets of key interlock systems, which were installed on control panels, T/R sets and access doors at raw mill, cooler and lignite mill ESP for two production lines (10 ESPs in total), in which Tai & Chyun also provided supervision during the installation procedure.

Key Interlock Installation at
Cement Plant in Thailand
After key interlock system installation, it can improve safety and prevent related accident among the
plant’s personnel no matter during ESP inspection or maintenance. Accordingly, key interlock system
will require users to follow safety procedure step by step prior to entering ESP. Therefore, it can ensure
that all electrical sources are turned off and grounded before the plant’s personnel can enter ESP.

T ai & Chyun recently received the order for 1 field of DE and

RDE replacement from one of our Indonesian utility plant
customers, which has power capacity of 3,400 MW (4x400 and
3x600 MW), aiming to improve operating voltage and current,
together with dust collecting efficiency in order to lower down
emission.

Question: Where are the key interlock systems located in ESP?
Answer: The interlock set is located at 4 locations, which are main breaker, T/R set earth switch lock, control key box, and access doors.
Question: Do we need to request for an engineer to supervise the installation & testing?
Answer: - If the plant already has interlock system, you can self-install the new one.
- If the plant has no experience about interlock and request for help – 1 day of supervision for each ESP will be suitable.

International Aerosol Conference (T&T IAC) on 7th- 8

August, 2017 at Prince of Songkla University, Thailand.
The conference emphasized on research of aerosol
