Saturday, August 20 is theday Daleville will celebrateits f irst b i r thday . Thecelebration will take place atthe Daleville ElementarySchool and will .offer avariety of all-day events,foods, arts and crafts andcompetitions.

A parade begins at noon atthe Bicentennial Park.

Fou r m u s i c a l per-i formanees are scheduled tobegin at 4 p.m. and there issure to be something of in-terest to every ear.

"The C o u s i n s " w i l l

present a collection of familyChristian music at 4 p.m.followed by barbershop har-monizing as performed bythe Muncie Chapter SPEB-SQSA at 7 p.m.

"Dezire," a local band,will perform beginning at 5p.m. The group specializes inrock and country music.

Finalizing the day's en-tertainment will be "Night-wind," a five-member group."Nightwind" recently cut ademo record and has per-formed locally in central In-diana for several years.

The group is a revival of af o r m e r B a r b e r s h o pA s s o c i a t i o n wh ich sangtogether for several yearsuntil 1977. Original mem-bers Don Tobey, Weiss, CliffEmrick, Ed Crouch andDave Ball decided to revivethe group last winter, ac-cording to Tobey. "We madea few phone calls and got itgoing again," he said. Theg r o u p practices eachTuesday, 7:30 p.m., at theMinnetrista Center.

Tobey said the group con-sists of men in occupationsranging froih Ball Stateprofessors to bankers to fac-tory workers, young and oldalike.

Local chapters hold fundraising performances to sup-po r t the I n s t i t u t e ofLogopedics for persons withcommunication handicaps.More than $4 million hasbeen raised for the nationalSPEBSQSA project. Theresidential treatment centeris located in Wichita, Kansas.

Four Daleville youth for--med a musical act especiallyfor the birthday festival.Members of "Dezire" haveonly been together for thelast three weeks. They willperform a mixture of rockand country music beginningat 5 p.m.

Three of the four youngmen are Daleville HighSchool students. Kevin Huff,15, plays rhythm guitar. Hesaid he switched from drumsto guitar about two yearsago. He plays drums whenhe performs with the Mar-ching Broncos.

Another band member.Pat Maddox, also playsdrums with the school band.He is featured drummer for"Dezire." All four teenagerssing in "Dezire." They prac-tice in the cooler-room of hisfamily's orchard, Davis' FruitFarm.

• The four th members,Frank Huff, plays bass guitarfor the group. According tohis brother, Kevin, Frankbegan playing about fouryears ag'o in their father'sband, "Earl Huff and theCountrymen." Their fatherretired from music andrecently opened Huffs UsedFurniture in Daleville. Frankworks as a deliveryman forCesipi's Pzzeria. He is a1983 DHS graduate. Heplans to leave the group af-ter ,the festival performance.

The group just cut a demorecord, using music writtenby Zachary and Weisner. Allthe band does vocals."Everybody in the band hasbeen in 'garage bands' forseveral years," said Weiss. Inaddition to performing theirown songs, the five youngmen perform arrangementsof music by Journey, theEagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd,to name a few.

In addition to sendingtheir demo to recordingcompanies, the men plan tosend a copy of the tape to"Q95 for an album projectthey've got going now," saidWeiss. "It's our first stab atimmortality."

The band has performedat the Char-Lu-Club in An-derson; Chug-a-Mug inMuncie; and at Abracadabra,Indianapolis. Two weekendsprior to their festival ap-pearance, Nightwind will beat Hoadley's in Alexandria.After the festival, they go tothe" Warehouse in Wabashand then to the GloriousEast End, Hartford City, saidWeiss.

The happy couple walk under a "flaming arch" at thefestival. "Judge" Ellen Nixon read them a somewhat differentceremony than their earlier, more legitimate marriage rite.Chuck had to promise to mop floors, take out the trash, etc.,etc. as his fellow department members looked on.

Bingo was a popular pastime at the Band Boosters boothduring the Birthday festival. Canned goods and handmadecraft items were taken home by winners.

Jonathan Wearly gritsteeth and pedals harder inthe Junior Tractor Pull.Jonathon pedaled his way toa win in the heavyweightdivision.

"The Cousins", an all-Daleville musical group, performedChristian family songs at the festival. All the children in thegroup really are cousins.

Crossing the finish line at the10K Run is Greg Harger, win-ner in the men's 19-24division. Runners battled heatand humidity along withaching muscles.
