22– Powder house
Currently Entrevaux military history museum, this
little storage was contained 9000kg of cannon‟s
powder, which was too much for the only place of
Entrevaux and extremely dangerous.
23– Citadel access
From the citadel, beautiful panoramic view over the
city, the valley and the mountains. 800
meters to walk on a paved way and 156 meters
height difference, about 25 minutes walk to go up.
Vauban fortress fine example (14th century and
rebuilt by Vauban in the 17th century).

1– Royal door
City main entrance since 1658, allowed Nice
access by Esteron valley, because of impassable
gorges lowest in the Var valley.
18th century fort protecting the entrance, only
accessed by ladder. The machicolations pierced
on the road side allowed to throw all kinds of
projectiles on attackers.
On the bridge crossing the Var, can still be seen on
the wall right side, a hole in the stone, used like a
stoup for people who passed over the bridge.
2– Drawbridge and towers
In 1690, two round towers were built on each side
of bridge with gatehouse and machicolations
located above for receiving the two chains of the
bridge, which was raised every night until the middle
of the 19th century.
3– Guardroom
Currently tourism desk, this large room allowed the
soldiers guarding the village entrance to access the
covered way.
4– Prison
This Police cell allowed to isolate suspects,
delinquents or served as place for the "drunkards".
5– Garrison commander‟s town house
The commander or "governor" lived at the Citadel until
17th century. Then a way between Citadel and city was
built and he was given him a townhouse, the only one with
running water (fountain in the hall).
Double monumental door with windows on the top, triple
tiles row under the roof, symbolising nobility home.
6– Bastion named “Portette” (end of 19th) :
Exceptional Vauban‟s era construction example, bastions
were both loaded with weapons with an elaborate
ventilation system for evacuation of black smoke of gun
powder.
Triple tiles row under the roof again symbolise nobility‟s
homes, the military buildings belonged to the King.
7– 17th Balcony :
This wrought iron balcony is another architectural feature
of noble houses. This modest house demonstrates the
limited wealth of the rural nobility .
8– Glandeves family „s Town house :
The Provencal family Glandeves, were Entrevaux's Lords
until 1542 and has kept this house until the Revolution.
Triple tiles row, many larges windows, and a
monumental staircase, this house was turned into a
barracks in 1823. In front of this house, along the
fortifications, is the second bastion.
9– Charity school :
Called "School of Brothers", it was created in the 17th
century for boys instruction. It served as a barracks during
the Revolution.
10- Cathedral (17th ) :
Built from 1604 to 1667, in a gothic Provencal style, with a
Baroque interior, it‟s dedicated to "Our Lady of the
Assumption". Located eastern end of town it‟s integrated
into fortifications.
11– Italy door :
This gate was a classic point of attack, including the troops
of Charles Quint in 1536 so it was strongly fortified by
Vauban who added a guardhouse with a watchtower, two
bridges and courtyard with cannons.
12- Double horned :
The first bridge was protected by this triangular rampart
and by Pandol's fort above. This path led towards Italy and
was an ideal invasion place for Savoy troops.
13- Episcopal Palace
Bishop's Residence with triple tiles row, larges windows and
double door surmounted by a fanlight. All bishops
belonged to the nobility.
14– Canon chapterhouse
Canons were bishop‟s assistants during the mass, many
were from the nobility. The Renaissance door is carved
down each side. Triple tiles row.
15– Renaissance door
Beautiful 15th century door, with stone lintel.
16– Clock tower
Provencal classic clock tower with a wrought iron bell-
tower.
17– Oven :
Bread ovens were generally owned by Lords and their
use was subject to royalty even if people had their own
ovens.
18– Medieval shop :
Characterised by merchandise‟s counters on both
sides of the door. Many workshops have been
converted, you will find remains of them throughout
the streets.
19– Saint-Jacques old hospice
Used as a travellers hotel in the Middle ages as well
as a place for hospital until the 1960's.
20- France door
Drawbridge and gatehouse adjacent.
21– Armoury
Armor and weapons storage.
