ThemainlegislationwhichcovershealthandsafetyistheHealthandSafetyatWorkAct1974.Withinthislegislationisstatesthatwemust,asemployersand/oremployees,takeoncertainresponsibilities:
• Employersmustsafeguardyouasfarasreasonablypossible,thisdoesnotjustapplytoApprentices.Thisalsoappliestothehealth,safetyandwelfareofallemployees.
• Employeeshaveadutytoactwithreasonablecaretoavoidcausingharmtothemselvesorotherswhilecarryingouttheirworkduties.

EmployersareabletodecidehowmuchtheywishtopayanapprenticeaslongasitmeetstheNationalMinimumWageforapprentices.
TheseratesarefortheNationalMinimumWagefromApril2017;
WhatAreEndPointAssessments(EPA’s)?
Theend-pointassessmentisseparatetoanyqualificationsorotherassessmentthattheapprenticemayundertakeduringtraining.Theapprenticewillnotbeabletoachievetheapprenticeshipwithoutpassingtheend-pointassessment.
Theassessmentshouldincludeaminimumoftwodifferentassessmentmethods.
Endpointassessmentsgiveassurancethattheapprenticepossessestheknowledge,skillsandbehaviourstobefullycompetentintheoccupation.
Endpointassessmentsareundertakenbyanindependentthirdpartywhohashadnotbeeninvolvedinthetrainingorlinemanagementoftheapprentice,andwhoisontheRegisterofApprenticeshipAssessmentOrganisations.

HowdoApprenticesprovecompetence?ThePortfolio
Youwillnormallyhavecollectedevidenceinafolder/fileoronlinewhichisyour‘portfolio’.Theportfolioshouldhaveanindexallowingeasyaccesstothecontents.Youmayrequireaseparatefilefor‘supplementary’information,suchashandouts,guidesorhandbooks.Thistypeofinformationshouldnotbeplacedintheportfolio.Theportfolioshouldbesafeguardedagainstdamageorloss,asreplacementofevidenceisverytimeconsumingandinsomecases,impossible.
WitnessTestimony
Youmayrequirewitnessestoworkyouhavecarriedoutinordertoconfirmthatyouhaveproducedtheevidencealone/inamannerthatisdeemedcompetent,withinthequalificationrequirements.Ashortstatementwithasignatureisusuallysufficient.Thetrainingmentor/assessorwillthenjudgetheevidencetoconfirmthestandardscovered.Copiesofstaffappraisalsorreportsshouldbekept,asthesewillassistinassessingprogress.

Evidencecanbecollectedinmanyformsandisacceptable,ifithelpstoprovecompetence.Evenevidencefrompreviousemploymentorexperiencecanbeused,ifitmeetsthecriteria.Typesofevidencemustbe:
• Valid:Relevanttotheunit/element/outcomebeingundertakenasindicatedinthequalificationstandards.
• Authentic:ThecompetentworkoftheApprentice,asrelevanttothesector/qualification;unassistedwhereverrequired/relevant.
