What’s Missing for you?Missing for me is: Class Regional Identity

What’s Missing for you?Missing for me is: Class Regional Identity

What other identities do you have?

Diversity1. Present Identities

Enabling everyone (including you) to be fully present as themselves

…also known as differentiation

2. Absent Identities Ensuring perspectives from those who are

not there

Differentiation

You can’t do differentiation to someone.

They need to be present too.

As themselves.

The Outcome

If you get differentiation right, you are halfway to

embedding diversity in your teaching

Absent IdentitiesIt’s not OK to… Talk only about mums on a parenting

course because there are no dads present.

Hold the session up three flights of stairs because no-one in a wheelchair has ever applied.

Not challenge racist language because everyone in the room is white.

Evidencing Equality and Diversity

Diversity (teacher) Differentiation strategy (present

identities) Different perspectives (absent identities)

Equality (organisation) Holistic recruitment and selection Inclusive learning strategy

Teacher Interventions Being Present as YOU

Individual Attention Appreciative, developmental feedback A really good Individual Learning Plan (ILP) Additional Learning Support, as appropriate Focus on self-responsibility skills (eg reflexion)

Absent Identities Stories, anecdotes Videos, images

A step too far…?

Autonomy

…and finally

Calling someone by their name is a powerful act of humanity.

DO IT

The Diversity Process

1. Which are the groups with whom you identify and about whom society makes assumptions that can limit that group’s influence and self-esteem?

The Diversity Process

2. Which is the group identity that, for whatever reason, most stands out for you today?

The Diversity Process

3. What does the world assume about that group, that can limit the group’s influence and self-esteem?

And what else?

The Diversity Process

4. Of those assumptions, which one do you think is most limiting?

The Diversity Process

5. Do you think that assumption is, in fact, inherently true of the group? What are your reasons for thinking so?

The Diversity Process

6. What would be your words for a liberating, true alternative assumption about that group?

The Incisive Question

If you knew that … [insert liberating true alternative assumption] … what would change for you?

And what else?

The Incisive Question

If you knew that … [insert liberating true alternative assumption] … what would change for the world?

And what else?

Recording

Please write down the Incisive Question.

Is there anything more you want to write?

Appreciation

Please take a moment to appreciate one another.

Succinctly and genuinely.
