Light Horses Used for

– Showing– Recreation– Work

Horse Breeds Quarter Horse: working ranch horse

– AQHA: largest horse breed assoc. in U.S.– fast sprinter (1/4 mile) = quarter horse– first breed developed in U.S. (1600’s)– most heavily muscled light horse– 14-16 hands tall at withers

Horse Breeds Thoroughbred: horse shows & racing

– faster at longer distances (1/4 - 2 miles)– jumping & hunting competitions– 15-17 hands tall

– parade, hunting, jumping, showing.

– endurance, heat tolerant– known for good looks– 14-15 hands tall

Standardbred -known for harness racing

Tennessee Walking Horse -known for fancy gait (walk)

American Saddlebred-know for riding, show, parade

– Large patches of white with brown, black or combination of the three.

Palomino– Light tan to golden color with flaxen

mane and tail. Appaloosa

– Mixture of white with any other color to create a pattern of spots. Mottled.

Now commonly used for pleasure riding and showing.

100lbs. Not a recognized breed. Used for showing and

companionship. Too small to be ridden.
