Building a better Cabo • steve Knauth

Could the Cabo 40 Expre be the timate Cabo? That' the goal for the
new e t boat in the lO-year-old California builder ' nine-model lineup, from
1 to 48 feet . ~We want this to be the best de'ned , best built and best equipped
l to ever leave the yard ," says Mike worth, Cabo vice president and com
nany co-founder. In the end , buyers will decide bethel' Cabo has achieved its goal ,
ay Haworth. In the meantime , the builder has made every effort with the twin diesel express, a combination of offshore performance and luxury accommodations that never forgets it 's a portfishing boat. There 's even rod t rage in the head. To start with, there 's more than 100
q uare feet of cockpit space for anlers to work in , thanks in part to the 'O-footer 's beamy body. (Maximum
beam is more than 15 feet.) That also leaves room for such gear as the port and starboard fishboxes with macerators, an icebox and bait prep center with a sink, a rigging board and tackle drawers. Padded gunwales , high cockp it sides and firm footholds add a measure of comfort and afet)'. Other
standard features include upper and lower transom doors , a reinforcing plate for a fighting chair , and freshand saltwater washdowns.
The express-style helm (with pedestal seat and companion) is on centerline for the best sightlines fore and aft. The modular dashboard is designed to hold a full complement of electronics, from standard gauges and engine monitoring screens to fish-finding and navigation instruments.
The compact interior sleeps at least

There's storage for 10 rods in the saloon, reached from the helm station by a three-step companionway. The settee is to starboard, and across the way is a

Quintrex calls itself the largest production boatbuilder in the Southern Hemisphere . And while most U.S. boaters p robably have never heard of the company, that may be bout to change. In January the company's new boat building facility in

TECH NOTES
Alden alters building technique
Alden Yachts of Portsmouth , R.I. , annOlmced tllis fall that all future boats - both sail and power - will be built using epoxy resin with E-glass , Kevlar or carbon fiber laminates , triple vacuum bagged and post thermal cured.
Epoxy composite construction will be standard for all Alden Yachts.
"This process will allow us to build a faster , stronger, lighter boat with a full furniture interior, complete with all the cruising luxuries available and a superior exterior fulish ," says Alden Yachts president David MacFarlane.
The process entails impregnating fiberglass material with epoxy resin before laminating. This allows better control of the glass-toresin ratio and weight, while ensuring there are no dry areas before the glass is in the mold, according to the builder.
To obtain a stronger laminate and eliminate air entrapment , hull and decks are triple vacuum bagged - after the outer skins are laminated, after the core is in place , and after the inner skin is laminated. Decks will be constructed in the same manner as hulls, according to Alden.
When the hull, deck and bulkheads are laminated, the parts will be post cured in an oven, some 60 feet long, constmcted for tllis process.
By using this process the completed vessel's weight may be reduced by up to 18 percent, wllile achieving lligher strengths without VOC emissions, MacFarlane says. www.aldenyachts.com
