BEGE-102 Page - 1Ans 1 a): Sentence- a sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. Sentences used to make statements and ask questions.
Examples:
The boy with the compass is our leader.
Kay Jones, the manager of the bicycle factory, talked to our class.
Sentence Types
Kind of Sentences:
One way to classify sentence is according to the purpose of the speaker or writer. There are four principal purposes for sentences; therefore, there are four kinds of sentences.
1. Declarative sentence- is used to make a statement. The statement may be one of fact, wish, intent, or feeling. It is followed by a period.
Example: I would like to visit the Grand Canyon.
That bird is flying.2. Imperative sentence- is used to state a command, request or direction. Although the subject of an imperative sentence is usually not expressed, it is always understood to be the pronoun you. An imperative sentence is usually followed by a period.
Example: You go straight to the doctor.
Finish all your chores before you go out.
3. Interrogative sentence- is used to ask a question. It is always followed by a question mark.
Example: Do you know all the lyrics?
Do you know how to ride a bike?
4. Exclamatory sentence- is used to express strong feeling. It is always followed by an exclamation point.
Example: What a beautiful rainbow!
What a beautiful sunrise!
