Anand Gopal IcametoERGtogetaPh.D.andinthebargainmetsomeofmybestfriends,realizedthatpeopleattheWorldBankandIMFarenotreallythatsmart,and,wasshockedtolearnthatbiking10milesaweekdoesnotjustifyde-scribingyourselfasanavidbikeronyourresume.NotadaygoesbywhenIamnotamazedbytheskills,dedication,kindnessanddriveofmyfellowERGiesandIamfortunatenotjusttohavemetthembuttohavetheopportunitytoworkwiththemfortherestofmycareer. Like many ERGies, my first two years were

adizzyingjourneyofexcitement,discovery,confu-sion,panicandtheeventualacceptancethatIcanonlywriteonedissertation.Mydissertationambitionsweregraduallypareddownfromonethatwasgoingtobringmodernenergyservicestoalloftheworld’spoortoassessingthelifecyclecarboncontentofsugarcaneethanolinIndia,IndonesiaandBrazil,whichmycom-mitteetellsmeisworthyofaPh.D. IamextremelygratefultomyfacultyadvisorsDanKammen,MikeO’Hare,BobDibble,SeverinBorenstein,ArneJacobsonandthelateAlexFarrellfortheirpatience,trustinmyability,mentoringandnumerousinsightfulideas.MyERGcolleaguescon-tributedevenmoretoimprovingthequalityofmyworkthroughtheirhardquestions,ideastoimprovemypapersandinsightfulfeedbackatPh.D.seminars.MyERGlifehasbeensomucheasierandsomuch

Barbara Haya IstartedmyPhDwithabigquestion:howcanindustrializedcountriessupportlow-carbonde-velopmentindevelopingcountrieseffectivelyandwithoutcausingharm?Iendedupdocumentinga

hugescam.Industrializedcountries,thathaveac-ceptedcarbonemissionscapsunderinternationalagreements,areallowedtopartiallymeettheircapsbybuyingcarboncreditsfromprojectsoutsideoftheirborders,likefromwindandhydropowerprojectsinIndia,whereIdidmyresearch.Idocumentedthatmanyoftheseprojectsdonotactuallyreduceemis-sions.Myworkpointstotheneedforindustrializedcountriestoreduceemissionsathomewhereemis-sionsarethegreatest,whilealsodirectlysupportingemissionsreductionsindevelopingcountries,ratherthanrelyingondubiouscarbonmarkets.Ifeelincrediblyluckytohavespenttheseyearslearning from, being influenced by, and making life-longfriendswithatrulyamazinggroupofindividualsatERG.Thisisagroupofpeoplethatshareadeepconcernforprotectingnatureandsocialjustice,andareputtingtheirincredibletalentstowardsthis.

Derek Lemoine ERGisamysteriousblackbox:itgathersafaintsignal,addsdimensionsofnoise,andoutputsamorerobustsignalthatsome-howpointstotwodimensionsandalldimensionsatonce.Itisacommunitywithwide-rang-inginterestsunitedbypracticalmotivations.Itisatraining device for finding an interesting question, figuring out which field is the needed method, and followingthroughtoananswer.Butmostofall,ERGisanexperimentinacademicself-determinism.Itopensdoorsaroundcampusandpermitsnewintel-

PhD Recipients continued: lectualcombinations,withthestudentabletodecidewhetherandhowfartoaccessanyofthem.Attheirbest,ourdissertationscouldpassacommitteeinthreedepartmentsbutwouldneverhaveoccurredtouswereweactuallyinanyofthosedepartments.Byprovid-ingintellectualspaceandopportunity,ERG’spathsprovideunlimitedupsideaswellastheindividualresponsibilitytorealizeit.Byforgoingastandard-izedlabel,weforceourselvestoactualizethevalueofinherentinterdisciplinarityandtobecomecomfortablecategorizingourselvesmoregenerallyasthinkersandproblem-solvers. Iowespecialthankstoafewpeople.First,myfamily---David,Brenda,andNathan---trustedinanyunfamiliarpath.Theytaughtmetowatch,listen,andquestion,andtotreatmasteryandknowl-edgeasafunctionofeffortanddesireratherthanofacredential’sgloss.Next,mycommitteememberseachprovedinvaluableintheirownway.DanKammendoesnotletdetailsblockvisionandisremarkablyunconstrainedbypasttemplates.ChristianTraegerisawonderfulcollaborator,atruefriend,andgener-ouswithhistime,code,andideas.LarryKarp,oneofthebestpeopletothinkthroughanyproblemwith,workedwithmeinanearlyleapoffaithandlateropenedprofessionaldoors.EveryconversationwithMikeO’Harebouncesacrosshisrangeofknowledgeandinterests:fromgarbagecontractsinNewJerseytothe true reason planes fly to negotiating for squirrels to,maybe,thetopicostensiblyathand.Finally,twoothermembersoftheBerkeleycommunity,SeverinBorensteinandMaxAuffhammer,alwaysofferedtimetheymaynothavehadandneednothaveprovided.Severaluniquecollectionsofpeoplehavealsomadethelastyearsspecial.TheERGfacultyinevitablyof-fersdiverseperspectives,thestaffbuildsthengreaseseverywheel,thestudentssupporteachotherinlife,andtheDragonsprovidethehighlightofeveryweek.Alexdictatednevertointerruptyourselfandalwaystosearchforthehardestchallenge,whileJohndiscoursesonwhatisbestinlife.Zoehasherschlag,butChris-tianlivesthroughwolfnapsandnighttimetrailruns.And flitting through the background, Fritz dons a dif-ferentdisguiseforeachofhisprojects.ManytimesIlongedtoslowtimesoastosavorthestageoflifeandappreciatetheopennessofthefuture.Atthesametime,theunfurlingofpathspowersitsownpullforward.Atleast,bythetimewegetthere,thenextstagealmostfeelsnatural.

Zack Norwood ERGhasgivenmeconfidence that good things still existinacademia.MygraduatestudentcareeratBerkeleyhasbeenlongandvaried,movingbetweenthreedepartmentsintwoschools,andtwonationallabs,butalwaystiedtotheexcitingworkandpeopleofERG.Itstartedin2005attheRenewableandAppropriateEnergyLaboratorywhenIwasinvitedtogiveapresentationaboutdrivingavegetableoilpoweredschoolbusbetweenSanFranciscoandCostaRica.ForthenextcoupleofyearsIattendedeveryoneofthoseRAELmeetingstosoakupthediversityofideasandinterests.Itwasinthosemeet-ingsthatIrealizedthatthenarrowfocusoftradi-tionalengineeringwasn’tforme.ApparentlyBerke-leyEngineeringagreed,asIwaspushedoutofonedepartment,foundatemporaryhomeinanother,andfinally made my way to ERG in 2008 while concur-rentlycompletingadegreeinmechanicalengineer-ing. IrememberfondlythedayswhenethanolwasthebuzzinERG,andthenhowquicklyitfelloutoffavor.Engaginginactivismagainstthead-ministrativebloatandthecontinuedmismanagementofCaliforniapubliceducationhasbeenbothreward-ingandsaddening.ThroughalltheexcitementIwasabletocreateacoherentdissertationentitled“Abettersteamengine:Designingadistributedconcen-tratingsolarcombinedheatandpowersystem”whilecollaboratingwithgreatpeopleonallsortsofotherprojectsfrommunicipalwastedisposaltocombinedheatandpowerattheSierraNevadabottlingplant.ERGhasbeenfuntimes,aplaceforunbridledcuri-osity,andIwillalwaysremembermytenurehere.

Gabrielle Wong-Parodi Likemanyofyou,IclearlyrememberreceivingaphonecallfromProfessorDickNorgaardinformingmethatIhadbeenacceptedtoERG.Iwasatworkatthetime,andIrememberjumpingupanddownforatleast30secondsandthenquicklyrushingdownthehalltotellmysuper-

science with policy-relevant fieldwork in the develop-ingworld. Thetopicofagroforestry(growingtreesto-getherwithcrops)providedaperfectopportunitytomergemyecologicalandpracticalambitions.Iwantedtoknowwhetheragroforestrycouldhelpfarmersinsub-SaharanAfricaadapttoclimatechange,butIwasstymiedbythelogistics:alltheclimatemanipulationexperimentsI’dheardaboutinvolvedmillion-dollarNSFgrants.Anepiphanycameoneafternooninmyadvisor’s office: “Instead of CO2 or temperature,” she said,“whydon’tyoutrysomethingmoremanageable,andmanipulaterainfall?” Thusmylow-tech,high-sweatdissertationwasborn.IspenttwoyearsinMalawiincollaborationwiththeWorldAgroforestryCentre(ICRAF),study-ing how drought affects nitrogen-fixing Gliricidia and Tephrosiatrees,whichareusedforsoilfertilityresto-ration.Withlocalhelp,Idesignedandbuiltthirty-sixrainexclusionshelters–simplebuteffective,and(Ihope)atemplateforfutureclimateexperimentsinAfrica.Myconclusions:underdrought,thesetreescanbevulnerableasseedlings,butwhenwell-establishedcanthriveandmayevenhelpprotectmaize(thestaplecrop)fromdisastrouslylowyields. As I finish my thesis, the next chapter in my lifeisenticinglyopen:Research?Teaching?Policy?Hopefully,allthree.Mydeepestsatisfactionisshar-ingmyenthusiasmforthenaturalworld,andexplor-ingourinterdependencywithit.ThroughoutthisadventureIhavebeensustainedbymyremarkablebrothersandparents;myinspiringgrandmother,whomImissgreatly;andmywonder-fulboyfriendJeremy,forwhosepatienceandloveIamimmenselylucky.IowemyacademicprogresstothededicatedmentorshipofmydissertationchairMargaretTorn,myacademicadvisorJohnHarte,andmysupervisoratICRAFMalawi,FestusAkinnifesi.HeartfeltthankstomyfellowHarteLabmembers,andto my Malawian colleagues and field assistants – ziko-mokwambiri.TomymanydearfriendsatERG,I

PhD Recipients continued: Masters RecipientsvisorthatIwouldbeleavingattheendofAugust.Adayortwolater,afterthenewshadthoroughlysunkin,Ifeltbothexcitedandabitanxious.GettingintoERGwasadreamcometrueandwhileIunderstoodthemechanicsofwhatgraduateschoolwouldinvolve,Ihadnoclearideaofexactlywhatchallengesandop-portunitieslayahead. Graduateschoolischallenging;there’snodoubtaboutit.Fromthecourseworktothesuccess-fulexecutionofathesis,andeverythinginbetween–thereweretimeswhenIfelttotallyoverwhelmedandwonderedifitwouldeverend.Yet,thereweremoments,especiallywhenIwasoutinWyominginterviewingfolksformythesis,whenIfeltsoincred-iblyblessedthatbeingastudentwasmyjob.Howmanypeoplegettodowhatwedo?Everyday,wegettothinkcreativelyaboutsolutionsforproblemsthatwe find both interesting and important. IfeelsofortunatethatI’vehadtheopportunitytospendthelastsixyearsimmersedintherichintel-lectualcommunitythatisERG.IknowthatI’llbeabletodrawuponthecommunityasIgoforwardinmyprofessionalpursuits.Nextyear,I’llbeapost-doctoralfellowintheDepartmentofEngineeringandPublicPolicyattheClimateandEnergyDecisionMakingCenteratCarnegieMellonUniversity.I’llbeworkingonprojectsrelatedtotheapplicationofsocialpsychologicalmethodstounderstandinghowtoeffec-tivelycommunicatewiththepubliconenergy-relatedproblems. Nate Aden TheERGMastersprogramiswelldescribedas “drinking from a fire hose”. At the same time that professorsimpartmultipledisciplinesanddatasets,fellowstudentsprovideinspirationthroughlocalactivism,startingtheirowncompanies,andpublish-ing new findings and approaches. One of the great thingsaboutERGisthatthemixofenergy,resource,andclimateresearchisgroundedinarichcommunityofcurrentandformerERGies.IcametoERGwhileworkingonChinaenergyissuesatLawrenceBerke-leyLab.Mygoalwastogatherknowledge,tools,andcollaborationstobroadenmyunderstandingofinternationalenergyuseandclimateimpacts.DuringthepasttwoyearsIhaveattainedthesegoalswhilebecominginvolvedinarangeofenergy,climate,anddevelopmentprojects.Atthispointit’snotexactlyclearhowmyvariousnewinterestsandabilitieswillcoalesceintomyeventualERGPhD,butunderstand-inginterrelationshipsispartoftheessenceofbeinganERGie. PriortoERGIlivedandworkedinChinaandSoutheastAsiaformorethantenyears.Thechallengeofincorporatingdevelopmentintoglobalresponsestoclimatechangeisoneofmycentralresearchareas,especiallyasappliedinAsia.Twoofmyfavoriteproj-ectsatERGhavebeenlifecycleassessmentofChina’selectricitysystemunderaglobal450ppmcarbondioxidescenarioandaneconomicandpolicy-basedfeasibility assessment of using thin-film photovolta-icstoprovidebackupelectricitygenerationinIndia.I’mlookingforwardtomorestimulatingprojectsandconversationsontheroadtothePhD.

Audrey Barrett MytimeatERG,focusingonthenexusofpublichealthandclimatepolicies,hasbeenawonder-fulwhirlwindtour!Ifeelgratefultohavebeenapartofboththe2011and2012Masterscohortsandthinkthatthelargestrewardforgrindingthroughproblemsets about spherical cows, writing weekly reflections onallthingsacademic,andattemptingtotrulyunder-standwhatitmeanstobeinterdisciplinaryhasbeengettingtoknowmyfellowERGies-well.LatenightbadmintongamesinBarrows,weekendskitrips,pot-lucks,dayhikesandinterestingconversationsinthe“terrible-awesomeroom”broughtlifetomyERGex-perience.Nottomentiontheweeklydiscussionswith

ourdedicatedandfriendlyERGstaffoverthehealthof the ecosystem inside Dan Kammen’s fish tank…and then my weekly walk over to Dick Norgaard’s office toaskhisopiniononhowtheworldreallyworks. AfterthreeyearsofgraduatestudiesatUCBerkeley,completingbothaMastersofPublicHealthandaM.S.inEnergyandResources,IknowthatIambetterequippedtocallattentiontotherightkindsofquestionswhendesigningregulationsandmakingpolicy decisions. I’ve truly enjoyed the flexibility that ERGgrantedmetocontinuemyresearchwithTomMcKoneonthepopulationhealthimpactsofalterna-tivefuelsandthedynamicenvironmentofERGthataffordedmetheopportunitytojumpfrompublichealthresearchtocap-and-tradeprogramdesigntodiscussions on sustainable fishing, community par-ticipation, floating cities and the role of religion. I’d liketothankmyfamilyandfriendsforsupportingmeandlisteningtomesayhowbusyI’vebeenthesepastthreeyearsandeveryoneatERGforyourinvolvementineducatingmeonsomuchmorethanwhat’sinsidetheclassroom.AsaTexanandanERGie,Ihopetocontinuemypursuitofeffectivecommunicationoncaringforourenvironmentandthecreaturesthatpopulateit.

Kristin Brainerd IcannotbegintoexpressmythankstoERG.Theyletme,themosthatedofallspecies-alawyer-intothisfabulousprogram.Acoupleofyearsago,Idecidedtoshiftfromenvironmentallawtopolicy.Whilefewpeoplequestionedmymoveawayfrompracticinglaw,severalwonderedaboutmychoicetobecome,onceagain,agradstudent.Ihavetoadmit,therehavebeenmomentswhenIhavequestioneditmyself-mostnotablywhilewalkingto8a.m.classesandstrugglingwithacertainsphericalcow(mylastproblemsetsdatedbacktohighschool).Butonthewhole,theexperiencehasbeensogreat,thereisnoquestioninmymindthatitwastherightchoice.Ihavelearnedatremendousamount.Moreimportantly,IhavehadthechancetobeapartoftheincrediblecommunitythatisERG.Iamregularlyamazedbymyclassmates-fortheirbreadthanddepthofknowledge,aswellasforwhatgenerousandcaringpeopletheyare.IamalsodeeplyindebtedtotheERGfacultyandstafffortheirtime,encouragementandsupport(even,andperhapsespecially,whenitfeltleastdeserved).Iamproudtohave(mostly)tackledthatcow,andaboveall-andthoughittooksometimetodoitwithout

laughing-Iamveryproudtocallmyselfan“ERGie.”

Jason Burwen IjoinedERGfairlyunexpectedly.IhadjustreturnedtotheGoldmanSchoolofPublicPolicyfromGhana,whereIhadrunmyselfraggedonarandom-ized-controltrialofanimprovedcookstoveprogram.DanKammenwasservingasmymaster’sprojectadvisoratthetime;afterpresentingmypreliminaryfindings, I was surprised to receive an email from him:“whyareyounotstayinghereforaPhD?!”IexplainedIwasnotfocusedinaparticulardiscipline;this,Iwastold,wasnotaproblem.Andso,insteadofcontinuingoninInternationalandAreaStudiesasplanned,ItooktoEnergyandResourcesGroup“unof-ficially” in my first year, gradually showing my face around the department while applying to join official-ly.(ThankgoodnessIwasaccepted.) Iamhonoredthatthiscommunityhasacceptedmeasabelatedaddition,andI’velearnedsomuchfromeventhesingleyearI’vegottentocallmyselfoneamongstyouall.ConversationswithotherERGieshavebeentheintellectualhighlightsofmytimehere,muchofwhichwasotherwisespentcrunchingdata,pushingthroughwriter’sblock,andkeepingupwithclasses.Iamespeciallyhappytohavehadtheoppor-tunitytoworkoncutting-edgeenergypolicyduringmyERG-sponsoredinternshipattheCaliforniaPublicUtilitiesCommission.WhileImaynotyetknowhowIwillintegratemyinterestsinlow-carbontransition,internationaldevelopment,andeconometrics,ERGhasgivenmeaninterdisciplinaryswiss-armyknife,the confidence to use it, and a group of like-minded scholar-practitioners-ninjaswithwhomtotradetac-tics.Forthat,Iamimmenselygrateful.

IrememberthinkingthatitwassoincrediblethatIwouldneverbeadmittedinamillionyears.Still,Itookachanceandappliedanyway.Now,forthepasttwoyearsIhavewokenupeverymorningthinking,“Wow,Ican’tbelieveI’mlivinginCaliforniaandattendingUCBerkeley!”IcomefromasmalltowninsoutheasternNewMexico.IhaveaB.S.inBioen-vironmentalSciencesfromTexasA&MUniversity.AftermyB.S.,Iwentbackhometoworkandsavemoneyforgraduateschool.IendedupworkingforacontractortotheDepartmentofEnergywhichman-agesanuclearwasterepositoryinNewMexico.After2years,IquitmyjobandhereIam. IthasbeenabitroughdecidingwhatIwantto do, but I finally decided to focus on sustainable consumptionandproduction(ThanksEricaandMikeWilson). It is easy to point the finger at unscrupulous corporations,dirtyoilcompanies,andcorruptpoliti-ciansfortheworld’sproblems.However,itisimpor-tanttorememberthatoureverydayactionshaveanimpactontherestoftheworld.Eachofushastheabilitytomakeadifferencesimplythroughthewaywechoosetoliveourlives. Finally,IwouldjustliketosaythatIcouldn’thaveaskedforamoreextraordinarygroupofpeopletoworkwith.ThankyoutoallERGies(includingstaffandfaculty)forbeingsuchamazinghumanbe-ings!Icouldn’thavemadeitthroughwithoutyou.Thankstoallofmyprofessors.ShoutouttomyHil-legasshousemates.Lastbutnotleast,thankyoutomyamazingfamilyforraisingmeandsupportingme.IloveyouandIwouldn’tbeherewithoutyou!

Andrew Crane-Droesch IcametoERGfromtheEnergyandEnviron-mentGroupatUNDP,whereImanagedtheGEF-fundedCommunity-BasedAdaptationProject.Gradschoolwasachancetobeabletodelvemoredeeplyandsubstantivelyintoenvironmentanddevelopment

Masters Recipients continued: issues,particularlywithregardtotheintersectionsofclimatechangeandseverepoverty.I’vefocusedonsoilcarbonandagriculturaldevelopmentineastAfrica,andIlookforwardtostartingappliedresearchin(both!)soilbiogeochemistryanddevelopmenteco-nomicsasIstarttheERGPhD. I’velearnedalotinthepasttwoyears.Beingthrowntogetherwithanincrediblydiverseandtal-entedgroupofpeoplehaswidenedmyperspectives,whilegroundingmeasIhavefocusedonbuildingdepth in specific areas. While my conceptualization ofthetypesofproblemsthatIwanttosolvehasnotchangedsinceI’vebeenatERG,mylensforap-proachingthemhassharpened.I’velearnedatonfromfacultyatERG.Butbyfar,mybestandmostimpor-tantteachershavebeenfellowstudents.IlookforwardtobeingthereforyouallifIevergetachance.Lastly,I want to thank my fiancée Amanda for all of her sup-port–puttingupwithmewhenthingsgetstressful,andhelpingmerememberthatthereisaworldoutsideofthebubbleofmyownresearch.WhichiswhyIamat ERG in the first place.

Taylor Keep IdecidedtocometoERGwhen,aftertwoyearsasasustainablebuildingdesignconsultant,Ilearnedthatmyownecologicalfootprintwasdominat-edbythefoodIwaseating.ShockedandembarrassedthatIhadneverthoughtmuchaboutfoodbefore,Isuddenlyrealizedthatmymechanicallyengineeredapproachwasgenerallyinadequateforthecomplexre-sourcechallengesaroundme.Iwantedtodesignmoreenjoyableandlowerenergyplacestoliveandwork,butIknewIneededamorecompleteandERGishwayofthinkingaboutsustainabilityinbuild-ings.SincecomingtoERG,Ihavesteppedbackandlookedbeyondbuildingstotheresourcesystemsthatsupportthem.InpartnershipwiththeEMAClabgroup,theLBL,andthecontrolsgroupintheme-chanicalengineeringdepartment,Ihaveexploredhowbuildingscanimprove,ratherthansimplyexploit,thereliabilityandsustainabilityoftheelectricitygrid.Inowthinkofsustainabledesignasbothusinglessanddoingmore.Ilookforwardtohelpingthebuildingindustrydomoreforpeopleandtheelectricitygridinmypost-ERGyears. Overthepasttwoyears,Ienjoyedwatchingbirds for the first time, I taught my first math class (hopefullynotmylast),Idiscoveredthebeautifulcomplexityoftheelectricitygrid,andIfellinlove

withJaneJacobs.Iskiedandcampedandkayakedandcanoedandbikedandpicnicked.IhadanauthenticIndianfeast,realMexicanchocolate,anddiscussedintegrityopenlyoverahome-cookedmeal.Throughitall,IlovedbeingapartofERGandbeinglovedbyitsgenerouscommunity.Thankstoeveryoneforteachingmesomuchandformakingthesepasttwoyearssowonderful.

Ana Mileva I have finally found an intellectual home in ERG.IcametoERGfromasocialscienceandeco-nomicsbackgroundviatheGoldmanSchoolofPublicPolicy to move into fields such as engineering and operationsresearch.OnlyatERGcouldthistransitionbenotonlypossible,butalsowelcomedandencour-aged.Here,theexperienceofthoseofuswhodidnottakeastraightintellectualandacademicpathisap-preciatedandvalued.ERGhasfosteredmyinterestinallaspectsofrenewableenergypolicy,butwhat’smore,learningaboutandfromthediverseworkofmyclassmatesandthefacultyherehasbeenrewardingandenriching. Erica Newman WhenIleftmysecondgraduateprogramtopursuemyloveofbirdwatchingthroughacareerinfield ornithology, I thought I was done with school, andthatIwouldnevertalkshopwithphysicistsoreconomistsagain.MeetingJohnHartemademechangemymind.IworkedforanumberofyearsinthecriticallyendangeredLongleafPinesavannaeco-systeminNorthCarolinadocumentingdecliningbirdpopulationsandlearningtheon-the-groundbasicsofprescribed fire as a restoration tool in fire-dependent ecosystems.WhenIrealizedthatsuccessfulconserva-tioneffortsonlyhappenwithinamatrixofscience,culture,andeconomics,IcametobacktoschooltostudywithJohn. IneverimaginedthattherewasaplacelikeERG,whereIcouldmeetotherstudentswhowereusinginterdisciplinarymethodstosolvelargeandim-mediateproblemswithrigorandoptimism.Thecon-versationsIhavehadinERG,thefriendshipsImade

Inmymastersproject,Iusedspeciesdistri-butionmodelingtoolsincombinationwithspatiallyexplicit, fine-scale climate data to capture the “cli-matic niche” of California wildfire activity, based on 50yearsofdataandapproximately10,000recordedwildfires. This is a first step in understanding how the frequency, intensity, and location of wildfire will changewithawarmerclimateandchangingprecipi-tationpatterns.Generally,dryerfuturesmaybringmore fire to coastal and Northern California, while wetter futures may lead to fire invading deserts where plantshavenotevolvedwiththisdisturbance.Iplantodevotetherestofmydissertationtostudyinghowwildfires are changing the carbon balance of Califor-niaforests,chaparralscrublands,savannasanddes-erts, and how fire disturbances in combination with invasivevegetationareaffectingthebiodiversityandecologicalintegrityofthesesystems.

Jalel Sager TenyearsaftergraduatingfromNewYorkUniversityinahumanities-orientedinterdisciplinaryprogramIcametoERGfortworeasons:toestablishabetterfoundationformyworkonclimatechangead-aptationandregionalresilience,andtosatisfyanolddream—borninacollegeclassonquantumphysicsandphilosophy—ofworkinginscience.Aftersevenyearsspentworkingasafreelancewriterandthreeasthe director of the non-profit Vietnam Green Build-ingCouncil,returningtoBerkeley,andjumpingintoaprogramthatencouragesbothquantitativeandqualita-tiveviewsofecological/societalissues,wasbracingandinspiring. ThequalityofpeoplehereatERGhasbeenarevelation.Iamluckytohavespentthelasttwoyearsamongthem,andIameagerlylookingforwardtothe

Today,twoyearslater,IcanhonestlysaythatERGhasachievedtheimpossible;ithasmanagedtoexceedtheexpectationsthatmademejumpupanddownwithexcitementthatSaturdaymorning.ERGhasgivenmetheopportunitytostudywhatinterestsme,transportationandclimatechange,withoutlosingsightoftheinterconnectednessofenvironmentalis-sues.InadditiontoresearchingtransportationpoliciesviamygraduatestudentresearcherpositionandtakingcoursesinCityandRegionalPlanning,Ialsolearnedhowtoperformalifecycleassessment,estimatethevolumeofthecampanile,andevaluatewaterpumptechnologiesforruralvillages.Inotherdepartments,thisdiversitywouldmakemestandout,butatERG,itisparforthecourse,whichisexactlyhowIlikeit! WhileIhavelearnedsomuchintheclass-room, the most influential lessons have come from my experienceswithfellowERGies,faculty,mentors,andresearchers.Iamindebtedtomyfriendsandteachersforhelpingmesucceedandforinspiringwiththeirexceptionalnesstodomoreandventurebeyondmycomfortzone.Furthermore,Ifeelextremelyfortunatetohavemetsomanyotherswho,likeme,aremotivat-edbyapassiontocontributeinawaythatsomehowleavesthisworldabetterplacethanitwaswhenwearrived.IlookforwardtocontinuingtoworktowardthisgoalalongsidemyfellowERGies.

Duncan Callaway Duncan Callaway attended his first ERG graduationandhopesheneverhastomissoneagain,ever. He taught a course on energy efficiency in build-ings and co-taught the first power engineering class offeredoutoftheelectricalengineeringdepartmentinthreedecades(n.b.,ERGhashadoneforthelastdecade).Hecontinuedpublishingontopicsofelec-tricity demand response and vehicle electrification, andstartedafewnewresearchprojectsonidentify-ing energy efficiency opportunities in building energy managementsystems.AcoupleofhighlightsincludewinningaresearchgrantfromtheCPUCwithpartnersSolarCityandTeslaMotorstodevelopadistributedelectricitystoragesystem,andatriptoBeijingwherehevisitedthepowerengineeringdepartmentatTsing-huaUniversity,with100faculty!

Daniel Kammen SinceOctober,2010DanielKammenhasbeenservingastheChiefTechnicalSpecialistforRenew-able Energy and Energy Efficiency, “the clean energy czar,”attheWorldBank,inWashington,DC.Duringthistimehehasbeenoverseeingandadvisingtheport-folioofREandEEprojects,whichconstituteabout60%(~$4billion/year)oftheWorldBankGroup’senergy lending. Specific focal areas of Kammen’s efforts have been the scale-up of the energy efficiency portfolio,thecoordinationofregionalgridandpowerpoolstopromoteenergyaccessandcleanenergygeneration, and the coordination of new efficient mass transitandelectricvehicleintegrationissues.Inaddi-tion,KammenservesfortheIPCCasaCoordinatingLeadAuthorSpecialReportonRenewableEnergy.Thisyearheparticipatedinacampaigntoevaluateal-ternativestoproposedcoalplantinMalaysianBorneo,thatledtothePrimeMinistercancelingtheplantinfavorofabasketoflow-carbontechnologies.

Zack Subinhascontinuedworkingonimprovingrep-resentationsoflakes,wetlands,andmethaneemissionsinglobalclimatemodels,withparticularapplicationtoArcticfeedbackstoclimatechange.HehasapaperinpressonecosystemfeedbackstoclimatechangeinCAandhasrecentlysubmittedtwopapersonlakemodelingandtheeffectsoflakesonhigh-latitudeclimate.Thisyear,hewillbeattemptingtodevelopanimprovedrepresentationofpeatlandstounderstandpotentialCO2andCH4emissionsfromtheseareasastheArcticwarms.
