SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR YOUR SUNBEAM ESPRESSO MACHINE

• Alwaysplacetheunitonaflat,levelsurface.• Donotoperatewithoutwaterinreservoir.

Fillreservoirwithonlycleanandcoldwater. Observethemaximumfillingvolumeis3litres.

• Donotremovethefilterhandleduringtheespressopourorwaterflowastheunitisunderpressure.Removingthefilterhandleduringeitheroftheseoperationscanleadtoascaldingorinjury.

• Thesteamwandandhotwatertapbecomeveryhotduringtexturingmilkandwaterflow.Thismaycauseburnsincaseofcontact,thereforeavoidany

directcontactwiththesteamwandorhotwatertap.

• Alwaysdisconnecttheplugfromthepoweroutletpriortocleaningtheespressomachineorifthereisanyproblemduringthecoffeemakingprocess.

• Donotallowthepowercordtocomeintocontactwiththehotpartsoftheespressomachine,includingthecupwarmingplate,hotwatertapandsteamwand.

• Donotplacehandsdirectlyunderthesteam,hotwaterorcoffeepourasthiscanleadtoascalding orinjury.

Sunbeam is very safety conscious when designing and manufacturing consumer products, but it is essential that the product user also exercise care when using an electrical appliance. Listed below are precautions which are essential for the safe use of an electrical appliance:

• Readcarefullyandsavealltheinstructionsprovidedwithanappliance.

Required Espresso PressureThe15BARItalianpumpproducestherequiredpressureforbrewingespressoconsistently.Fittedwithapressurereliefsystemwhichensuresthatanyremainingpressureaftertheextraction,isreleasedintothedriptray;allowingforquick,successivebrews.

Espresso TemperatureIndependentthermoblockheatingsystemsarelinedwithstainlesssteelandfittedwithPIDtechnology.ThePID(proportionalintegralderivative)technologycontrolsthethermoblocktodeliverprecisewatertemperature,ensuringaconsistentbreweverytime.

Shouldtheneedlefailtoreachthetargetareathisisanindicationthattheserveofespressois‘under-extracted’.Thisoccurswhenwaterpassestooquicklythroughthetampedcoffeegrindsandisanindicationthateitherthegrindistoocoarse(sothewaterflowsstraightthroughthegrinds)orthefilterbaskethasbeenunder-dosed.Thepourisquickandlightincolourandtheresultingcremaisthinwithacreamylightbrowncolour.

Whentheneedlegoesbeyondthetargetareaitisanindicationthattheserveofespressois‘over-extracted’.Thisoccurswhenthewaterpassesveryslowlythroughthetampedcoffeegrindsandisanindicationthateitherthegrindistoofine(sothatitisdifficultforthewatertopassthrough)orthefilterbaskethasbeenover-dosed.Inthissituationthehotwaterisincontactwiththecoffeegrindsfortoolongthuscreatingaburntandbittertastingespresso.Thisischaracterisedbytheespressoonlyslowlydrippingduringtheentirepourandthecremaisverydark.

Milk Temperature GaugeThe4BARsteampumpproducesinstant,constantsteampressurefortexturingmilk.Animportantfactorwhencreatingmilkfoamistemperature.Thesteamwandintegratesatemperaturesensingdevicethatrelaysthetemperatureofthemilkduringtexturingtothemilktemperaturegaugeonthecontrolboard.

Asmostcoffeesaremilkbased,thishighlightstheimportanceofgettingthemilkright.Theendproductshouldbesmooth,velvetywithnoneorbarelyvisiblebubbles.Milktexturedtotheoptimumtemperatureimprovesandsweetensthetaste.

Commercial Size Group Head & Group HandleThegrouphead,grouphandleandfiltersaredesignedtocommercialspecificationsusingbrassandstainlesssteelcomponents.Theseelementshelpcontributetothepreparationofanespressoserve,asitallowsthecoffeemakertopackthenecessaryamountofcoffeegrinds,whichthenexpandfirmlyandevenlyontotheshowerscreen.

Theslopinggrouphandlegivesthecoffeemakeramoreergonomicactionwhenattachingandremovingthehandlefromthegrouphead.Alsowhenrestedonthebenchthefilterbasketsitslevel,thisresultsinamoreeventampensuringanevenextraction.Theunder-sideofthebaskethasatampingpadsoyoucanpositionthegrouphandleonthesideofthebenchwhichpreventsscratchesonyourbenchtopwhilstensuringthebasketremainslevel.

Single Floor FiltersThesearethemostcommonstyleoffilters.Thesmallerfilterisusedforasinglecupofcoffee,andthelargerdoublefilterisusedfortwocupsofcoffee,oronesingle'doublestrength'cupofcoffee.

Dual Floor FiltersThesefiltershave2floors.Theyaredesignedforusewithpregroundcoffee.Thiscoffeeistoocoarseforuseinthesinglefloorbaskets.Dualfloorbasketsaredesignedtocompensateforthisbyslowingtheflowofespressocreatingasubtleaerationtoensureagoldencrema.Althoughdesignedforusewithpregroundcoffee,dualfloorfilterbasketscanalsobeusedwithallgroundcoffee.

• Filltheespressomachinewithwater;1.Simplyliftthelidofthewaterreservoirat

thetopoftheespressomachineandusingajug,fillwithfreshcoldwaterorfilteredwater.

2.Alternativelyslideoutthewaterreservoirfromthebackoftheespressomachineandfillwithfreshcoldwaterorfilteredwater.Thenreplacethewaterreservoir,ensuringitisfirmlyinplace.

• Insertthepowercordintoa230-240VACpoweroutletandswitchthepoweron.

• Power Note:BeforeturningontheespressomachineensurethesteamandhotwatercontroldialsareintheOFFposition.

•PressthePOWERbuttononcetoturntheespressomachineon.Themachinewillbeeponceandthepowerbuttonwillflashtoindicatethatyourmachineisonandisheatingup.

Power Saving ModeAfter1hourofnon-usetheespressomachinewillautomaticallyswitchtoPOWERSAVINGMODE.OncetheespressomachineisinPOWERSAVINGMODEallthelightsonthebuttonswilldim.WhileinPOWERSAVINGMODEtheespressomachinepowersdownto75%ofpower.Afterafurther4hoursofnon-usetheespressomachinewillbeeponceandthenturnoff.TobringtheespressomachineoutofPOWERSAVINGMODEsimplypressanyofthebuttonsonthecontrolboard.

Pre-heating GlassesPre-heatglassesandcupsbyfillingthemwithhotwaterasthiswillassisttopreservethecremaoftheespressoandalsohelpmaintainthetemperatureoftheespresso.Justpriortomakingyourespresso,glassesandcupscanbepre-heatedusingthehotwaterfeatureonyourespressomachine.Otherwiseglassesandcupscanbestoredonthewarmingtrayoftheespressomachine;thiswillalsoassistinpre-heating.

Pre-heating the Group Handle and Filter basketsThisisimportantespeciallyforthefirstcoffeebeingmade,asacoldgrouphandle

cansignificantlydecreasethetemperatureofthewateratthepointofextraction.Thisinturnwillalterthequalityandcharacteristicsoftheresultingespressoextraction.

Aneasywaytopre-heatthegrouphandleandfilterbasketistofitthegrouphandlewithafilterbasketandholdunderthegrouphead.PresstheMANUALbuttonandallowthehotwatertoflowoverthegrouphandle.Rotatethegrouphandlesoboththeundersideofthegrouphandleandthefilterbasketispreheated.YoumayneedtopresstheMANUALbuttonagaintoensurethegrouphandleandfilterbasketisproperlypre-heated.

Drythefilterbasketbeforefillingwithcoffee.

Dosing and Tamping

•Drywipethebasket.

•Grindevenlyanddirectlyintothecentreofthefilterbasket.

•Fillthefilterbasketwithgroundcoffeetotherim.

•Usingthetamper,tampstraightdown,thisisgoingtocreatemorespaceforsomemorecoffee.

•Grindmorecoffeetoasimilarlevelinthefilterbasket.Usethetamp,andtampfirmlystraightdownwardsuntilthereisabouta5-10mmspacebetweenthetampedgroundsandthetopofthefilterbasket.

•Brushanyloosecoffeeofftherimofthebasketintothecentreandtampdownagain,thistimetwistthetampertosealthetopofthecoffee.

•Wipetherimofthefilterbasketfreeofanyloosecoffeegrindsanduseimmediately.

Using Manual OperationUseMANUALwithgroundcoffee,notwithcapsules.TheMANUALbuttongivesthe

usercompletecontroloverthelengthoftheespressopour.TousethisoperationpresstheMANUALbuttononcetostarttheespressopour.Thepourwillstartwiththepre-infusionandthentheespressopourwillfollow.PresstheMANUALbuttonagaintostoptheespressopour.Note:WhenusingtheMANUALoperation,thelightsonthe1&2cupbuttonswillgooffandthelightsonthePOWERandMANUALbuttonswillremainon.

1 Cup Espresso Pour

Usewithgroundcoffee,notwithcapsules.The1CUPfunctionremovestheguessworkandisprogrammedtopour30mlsofespresso.

Tip:Werecommendusingthe1CUPbasketwhenusingtheprogrammed1CUPfunction.

Tousethisoperationpressthe1CUPbuttononcetostarttheespressopour.Thepourwillstartwiththepre-infusionandthentheespressopourwillfollow.

Theespressopourwillstopafterthe1CUPvolumehasbeenextracted.

Note:Whenusingthe1CUPfunction,thelightsontheMANUALand2CUPbuttonswillgooffandthelightsonthePOWERand1CUPbuttonswillremainon.

Note:Whenusingthe1CUPfunctionthecoffeemakercanstoptheespressopouratanytimebypressingtheMANUAL,1or2CUPbuttons.

2 Cup Espresso PourUsewithgroundcoffee,notwithcapsules.The2CUPfunctionremovestheguessworkandisprogrammedtopour60mlsofespresso.Thiscanbeusedfor2cupsofcoffee(place2cupsunderthegrouphandle)orforonestrong(double)cupofcoffee.

Tip:Werecommendusingthe2CUPbasketwhenusingtheprogrammed2CUPfunction.

Tousethisoperationpressthe2CUPbuttononcetostarttheespressopour.Thepourwillstartwiththepre-infusionandthentheespressopourwillfollow.

Theespressopourwillstopafterthe2CUPvolumehasbeenextracted.

Note:Whenusingthe2CUPfunction,thelightsontheMANUALand1CUPbuttonswillgooffandthelightsonthePOWERand2CUPbuttonswillremainon.

The Espresso Pour TipsGreatcoffeesstartwithfreshlyroastedbeansthatwilldeliverasweetespressothatwillberichintexture,bodyandaroma.Controllingeachpartofthecoffeemakingprocessistherealsecret.

•Neverextractanymorethan30mlsofespresso.

•Alwayspurgewaterfromthegroupheadbeforelockinginthegrouphandlewithcoffee,thiswilldislodgeanygroundcoffeeresiduefromthegrouphead.

Thewaytheespressopourswilltellyoueverything.Whatyouarelookingforis;

1.Infusiontime;whenpressurisedwaterisbeingforcedthroughthegroundcoffee.

2.Colouroftheespresso;shouldbedarkbrown.

3.Resistance;lookingforathickness,oraniceoozinesslikedrippinghoney,withresistanceatabout2/3fromthespoutstothebottomofthecup.It’sgoingtofallandpullbackup.

4.Evenextraction;notextremelytightatthebeginningorpouringexcessivelyfastattheend.

5.Lookforcolourchange;whentheespressochangesfromadarkbrowntoacreamyorlightcolourthesweetestflavoursandoilshavebeenextractedandthisusuallyhappensaroundthe25-30mlmark,afterwhichtheespressopourisfinished.

SteamToactivatethesteam,turnthesteamdialonbyturninganti-clockwise.Thiswillopenthesteamfunctionwithaninstantandconstantsupplyofpowerfulsteamfortexturingmilk.

Toturnthesteamoff,turnthesteamdialtotheOFFposition.

Tip:Toensureoptimumsteamperformancewerecommendthatattheendoftexturingmilk,wipethetipofthesteamwandcleanofanymilkresidue.

Hot WaterToactivatethehotwaterfunction,turnthehotwaterdialonbyturninganti-clockwise.Thiswilldispenseaninstantflowofhotwater.

Tip:Thisfeatureisidealforpre-warmingcups/glassesorformakingaLongBlack.

Inserting a capsule adaptor

1.ChooseaCapsuleadaptorbasewhichmatchesyourcapsulebrand, eg.Black=Nespresso. Insertthebaseintothegrouphandle.Ensurethebayonetsontheundersideofthebase,areinsertedintotheslotsonthehandle.Ensuretheadaptorbasesitsflushinthegrouphandle.

3.InsertyourcorrespondingcoffeecapsuleintoCapsulebase.Thentakecapsuletopandplaceontop.Usingboththumbs,pressdownoncapsuleadaptortopuntilitpiercesthecapsule.The capsule must be pierced prior to inserting into the espresso machine.

2.Whenthebaseisflushinthegrouphandle,turncapsuleadaptorbaseabout30°soitdoesnotfallout.Thiswillmakeiteasierwhenyou'reknockingouttheusedcapsules,afteryou'vemadeyourcoffee.

4.Yourcapsulehandleisnowreadytobeinsertedintothemachinegrouphandle.

IMPORTANT: •Thecapsuleadaptorbaseandtopmustbethesamecolour.Ifyouusedifferentcoloursthemachinewillnotwork.

•Itisimportantthetopspike/spikespuncturethesurfaceofthecapsule,otherwisetherewillbenocoffeepour.

Thecoffeemakingprocessinvolvesextractingoilsoutofcoffeegrindstomakeespressocoffee.Depositsoftheseoilsbuildupovertimeandaffectthetasteofthecoffeeandoperationoftheespressomachine.

Regularcleaningtoremovetheseoilsisessentialandwillmaintainthequalityofthecoffeetheespressomachineproducesandresultinlessmaintenancebeingrequired.Thisiseasytodobyfollowingafewquickandeasycleaningstepsaftereachcoffeemakingsession;

Takecarewhencleaningtheadaptorsasthecapsulespikesaresharp.Rinsewithtapwaterandairdry.

Depositsofcoffeeoilsbuildupovertimeandaffectthetasteofthecoffeeandoperationoftheespressomachine.Thereforethegroupheadwillrequireregularcleaning.Itisrecommendedthatthegroupheadiscleanedataminimumevery3months,thiswillvarydependingonthefrequencyofuse.

1. Removethewaterreservoirandrinseclean.Withfreshwatercompletelyfillandreplacethereservoir.

2. Removethecleaningdiscwhichisinsideofthetopfilllid,locatedatthetopoftheespressomachine.

3. Fitthegrouphandlewiththedoublefilterbasket.

4. Positionthecleaningdiscintothedoublefilterbasket.

Coffee thermoblock cleaning cycle

Descaling Cycle for both the Coffee and Steam ThermoblocksScaleisasurfacebuildupofmineralsthatnaturallyoccurovertimeinallappliancesthatareinvolvedwiththeheatingofwater.Thereforetheespressomachinewillrequireoccasionaldescaling.Itisrecommendedthattheespressomachineisdescaledevery4-6months;thiswillvarydependingonthefrequencyofuseandwaterhardness.

1. Removethewaterreservoirandrinseclean.Fillwithfreshcoldwaterandreplacethereservoir.

2. Usingascrewdriverunscrewthefilter/showerscreenfromtheundersideofthegroupheadandcleanunderrunningwater.

3. Replacethefilter/showerscreenandscrewinposition.

4. Placealargecontainerunderthegroupheadandalsopositionthesteamwandsowaterfromboththegroupheadandthesteamwandwillfallintothecontainer.

5. TurnthesteamdialtotheONposition.

Important:Thehotwaterdialmustbeclosedduringdescaling.

6.Insertthepowercordintoa230-240VACpoweroutletandswitchthepowerON.

b) ORiftheespressomachinestartstobeepandthe1CUPLEDisflashingitmeansitisreadytostartthedescalingcycleandyoushouldcontinuetostep8.

8. Useoneofthefollowing;

a) SunbeamEspressoMachineDescalingTablets(EM0010).Fillthewaterreservoirwith3litresofwarmwaterandplace3descalingtabletsintothereservoir.Oncethetabletshavedissolvedreplacethereservoirintopositioninthemachine.

b) SunbeamLiquidDescaler.Fillthewaterreservoirwithapproximately3litresofwater,add2capfulsoftheSunbeamLiquidDescalerandreplacethereservoirintopositioninthemachine.

c) VinegarSolution.Fillthewaterreservoirwithapproximately3litresofwater,add6tablespoonsofvinegarandreplacethereservoirintopositioninthemachine.

Important:EnsuretheSTEAMdialisstillintheONposition.

9. Activatethedescalingcyclebypressingtheflashing1CUPbuttononce.

10.ThepumpsforbothSTEAMandESPRESSOwillstarttopumpthroughthedescalingsolutionforapproximately15seconds.

11.Bothpumpswillstopandwaitforapproximately1minutetoallowthedescalingsolutiontotakeeffect.

12.Theespressomachinewillrepeatthepumpingandrestcyclesfor13timesforboththeSTEAMandESPRESSOthermoblocks.Thiswilltakeapproximately17minutes.

13.Atthecompletionofthe14cyclestheespressomachinewillstarttobeepandthe1CUPbuttonwillflash.

14.Removethewaterreservoir,emptyandrinsethoroughlywithcoldwater.Alsoemptythecontainerunderthegroupheadandsteamwandandplacebackintoposition.

15.Refillthewaterreservoirwithclean,cold,freshwaterandplacebackintotheespressomachine.

16.Activatethedescalingprocessbypressingtheflashing1CUPbuttononce.
