In(her(talk("Redefining(Rape,"(Estelle(Freedman(shows(how,(throughout(American(history,(rape(hascontributed(to(the(meaning(of(ciGzenship(and(how(aspiring(ciGzens(have(repeatedly(tried(toredefine(rape.(Her(talk(highlights(the(mixed(results(of(efforts(by(early(women's(rights(and(racialjusGce(advocates(to(undermine(the(sexual(and(poliGcal(enGtlements(of(white(men,(as(well(as(theidenGficaGon(of(certain(immigrant(and(gay(men(as(sexual(threats(to(children(in(the(early(twenGethcentury.(Estelle(Freedman(is(a(U.S.(historian(specializing(in(women's(history(and(feminist(studies.

Estelle(Freedman(is(a(U.S.(historian(specializing(in(women's(history(and(feminist(studies.(She(hastaught(at(Stanford(University(since(1976(and(is(a(coTfounder(of(the(Program(in(Feminist,(Gender,and(Sexuality(Studies.(Her(newest(publicaGon(is(Redefining(Rape:(Sexual(Violence(in(the(Era(ofSuffrage(and(Segrega%on((Harvard(UP,(2013).(Professor(Freedman's(research(interests(focus(on(the(history(of(women(and(social(reform,(includingfeminism(and(prison(reform,(as(well(as(the(history(of(sexuality.(The(Essen%al(Feminist(Reader(Modern(Library(Classics,(2007)(is(an(edited(anthology(of(64(primary(documents(from(feministhistory(around(the(world(spanning(the(fi[eenth(to(the(twentyTfirst(centuries.(Feminism,(Sexuality,and(Poli%cs((University(of(North(Carolina(Press,(2006)(is(a(collecGon(of(eight(previously(publishedand(three(new(essays.(No(Turning(Back:(The(History(of(Feminism(and(the(Future(of(Women(BallanGne(Books,(2002)(explores(feminism(in(the(West(and(its(relaGonship(to(broader(movementsfor(women's(rights(and(social(change(throughout(the(world.
