Ever wonder what rock bands and classical composers have in common? ETSO Music Director Richard Lee is your guide through this engaging and fun exploration of how classical music has influenced popular music through the years. Joining the ETSO on stage will be the Stanley’s BBQ All-Star Band. It’s going to be a rockin’ way to start the season! Highlights include “A Fifth of Beethoven,” “Whiter Shade of Pale/Bach’s Air from Suite No. 3,” “Waltz Across Texas/Strauss’ Roses from the South,” “Hooked on Classics” Medley and more! Guest conductor Dirk Meyer is currently Music Director of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra in Minnesota. He serves as Music Director of the Lyric Opera of the North and also holds the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Sarasota Orchestra in Florida.

to my fellow east texans,
I am immensely proud of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra, and of my fifth season at its helm. (Here’s to many more—knock on wood!) Our programs in 2016/17 are filled with vibrant music, immensely talented guest artists and new discoveries. The ETSO, dare I say, has rarely sounded better. After a brief respite, we are continuing our exploration of the great symphonies of Brahms (3rd) and Beethoven (4th).
other highlights include:• 2016 Grammy award winner, Augustin Hadelich, easily one
of the best violinists on the planet, performing Mozart’s “Turkish” concerto.
• The legendary Béla Fleck, performing his very own banjo concerto, “The Impostor.”
• Jan Lisiecki returns to complete his Chopin “cycle,” performing the first piano concerto.
And our amazing Opening Night is a concert exploring the connections between popular and classical music that will feature the Stanley’s BBQ All-Star Band, put together expressly for this performance.
And folks, there’s much, much more. Peruse, ponder and purchase your subscription and I’ll see you at the symphony!

The marriage of music and dance takes center stage for an evening of music by Debussy, Ravel and Brahms. ETSO principal harpist, Dr. Janel Hector, is featured in Debussy’s Danses sacrée et profane. Dancers from the Tyler Junior College Academy of Dance join the orchestra for Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin. The concert also features the Texas premiere of Theofanidis’ Dreamtime Ancestors and a continuation of the ETSO Brahms cycle with a performance of his melodic Symphony No. 3.
Richard Lee and acclaimed young pianist Jan Lisiecki are reunited on the stage of the UT Tyler Cowan Center for a concert that echoes their first appearances with the orchestra back in 2011 when Richard Lee was a candidate for Music Director. Lisiecki will be featured in Chopin’s exquisite Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor. Also on the program, Dvořák’s powerful Symphony No. 7.

From intimate and diverse programming at Liberty Hall in Downtown Tyler to celebrations on the Square and special events in the community, the East Texas Symphony Orchestra is part of the cultural fabric of the region. Past seasons have included the annual Jazz Spectacular featuring students from Tyler Junior College, evenings of vocal and chamber music, and family-focused programs.
Education also is at the heart of what the East Texas Symphony Orchestra does each season. Pre-concert public programs such as Noon Notes and Opening Notes along with masterclasses with guest artists engage audiences with the music and performers to expand the concert experience.
The annual ETSO School Concerts feature collaborative presentations geared for students in grades 4 and 5. The 2016/17 Season will include the continued collaboration with Carnegie Hall to present a program from the Link Up series. This year-long program includes classroom curriculum provided by the education experts at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music institute. Preparation culminates in a participatory concert for the students. The School Concerts program is open to public and private schools along with home school groups in the region.
information about ETSO community and educational programs is available from the ETSO Office, 903-526-3876, or online at www.ETSO.org.

The mission of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra is to engage, embrace and excite the East Texas community through inspiring musical performance. The ETSO relies on donations from businesses, foundations, and most of all individuals – like YOU – to achieve this mission.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the East Texas Symphony Orchestra. Call the ETSO office at 903-526-3876 or visit www.ETSO.org. Every size gift is important. Thank you.
