The key voice for biogas in EuropeInternational nonprofit organisationMembers: national biogas organisations + NGO‘s + companiesWellestablished network and communication platformfor exchanging information and expertise in biogasMain activities:1. Representation of the industry’s interests in relation to EU  legislation/regulations/strategies/forward planning (NREAP’s, Energy Europe 2050, Energy taxation, Brussels office)2. Cooperation with other European organisations (like AEBIOM, p p g ( ,EREF, NGVA – Future Transport Fuels)3. Participation in EU projects (BiogasIN, GGG)4. Processing and dissemination of information (database, conference, broschure, news letters, country profiles, etc.)

Biomethane production in Europe

• ~ 200 producing unit

• Biomethane production in 14 countries

• Grid injection:

AT,CH,DE,ES,FI,FR,LU,NL,NR,UK

• Transportation fuel use:

AT,CH,DE,DK,FI,HU,IS,NR,SE

• Limitation on grid injection for biomethane produced from biomethane produced from

landfill and sewage gas in

several countries

(e.g. AT, FR, DE, CH)

Biomethane

• Upgrading biogas to bioCH4 -multiply use, including motor fuel use of natural gas distribution and storage systemnew geographical and commercial dimensions possibility of cross-border transactions

• Support (FIT, tax benefits, investment subsidies) needed

• Feed-in- tariff for biomethane grid injectionUK 0 82 EUR/ 3 t f l ( t 250 kW)UK: ~ 0,82 EUR/m3 on top of gas value (up to 250 kW)FR: 0,64–0,95 EUR/m3 (up to 350 m3/hour)

Value of biomethane

• Value of biomethane: physical (in use) value + intrinsic („bio”) value

• Intrinsic value: „green”, renewable, sustainable • The physical flow does not carry the intrinsic value • Condition for biomethane production:

intrinsic value realised on the market

• Who would pay a price above physical value?

a) Endusers receiving state support

b) Individual customers with highly developed

environmental awareness and/or strong „green”

image considerations.

Present status of biomethane market

• Cross border biomethane trade - sporadic, bilateral,limited (DE>SE, DE>NL, DE>CH)

• No real European BioCH4 market today Biomethane registries • Biomethane registries

- DE: Biogasregister- DK: Energinet- NL: Vertogas- UK: Green Gas Certification Scheme

• DE and NL negotiating to connect the registries • „Naturemade biomethane” – label in CH„Naturemade biomethane label in CH• Biogasrat (Germany) - „EU-Regist” concept• Green Gas Grids project - roadmap to create a Europe-wide

biomethane trade scheme

27th June 2012

Biomethane registries

• Independent, neutral organisations

• Established through voluntary cooperation of market players

• Track, confirm and document the biomethane transactions along the contractual chain

• Administrative support in meeting regulative requirements

• Independent audit controls

• Assisting trade development through building market confidence

• Guarantee of Origing

• Guarantee of Sustainability

• Issued documents are not trade-able certificates
