The major outcomes of the survey show that after the EDD event in 2010:

• Publicreceivedmoreinformationonorgandonation.• Informationofsomeparticularsubjectsoforgandonationwasbetterspreadout.• AwarenessofEDDcelebrationamonggeneralpublicwashigher.• Apartofthegeneralpublicgotnewandinterestinginformationaboutorgandonation; newinformationinfluencedtheiropinion,feelingsanddecisionmakinginapositive way.

TheconductedsurveycouldbeusedasabaselineforfutureevaluationofimpactofEDDs.Thesampleofthequestionnairefortheevaluationoftheeventisavailableonthewebsitewww.europeandonationday.org.

TOOLKIT FOR EVENT ORGANIZERS ThemainresultoftheprojectwasabookletToolkitforeventorganizersofEuropeanDona-tionDaywhichfilledtheabsenceoftheappropriateframeworkonaEuropeanlevel.TheguidelinesareseenasausefultoolfortheorganizationoffuturecelebrationsofEuropeanDonationDay.Withtheeventthegeneralpublic,healthcareprofessionals,mediaandpo-liticalaudienceshouldbeaddressed.Theyallplayacrucialroleinthefurtherdevelopmentofefficienttreatmentwithtransplantation.

ToolkitoffersmoreinformationaboutthemotivationbehindtheorganisationofEDD,itshistoryandrelevancetocommunicationwithpublic.Moreoveritproposesallpracticalguidelineshowtoorganizeandstructuretheeventfromthestarttillitsend.Toconclude,thereareinstructionshowtoevaluatetheeffectoftheeventonthepublic.

BACKGROUND Themajorobstacleinthetransplantationmedicineremainstheshortageoforgans.NearlyallEuropeancountriesarefacingwiththechallengeofhowtoincreasepublicawarenessandparticipationinorgandonation.AlthoughseveralstudiesdemonstratethatthemajorityoftheEuropeanpublicsupportstheideaoforgandonation,thereisavastgapbetweentheideaandpublicparticipation,sincethenumberoforgandonorsisbyandlargeindecline.TheEuropeanaverageisaround16deceaseddonorspermillionpopula-tion(pmp),whichisconsideredaratherlowrate.

Oneofthemostimportantfactorsthatinfluencestheorgandonationrateissocialawareness.

Promotionofthetransplantationmedicineandincreasingpublicawarenessforthedonationofhumanbodypartsforthetreatmentisamultilevel,ongoingandchallengingactivity.

OneoftheresponsesoftheEuropeanhealthpolicyofhowtoaddressthesechallengesisincludedintheActionPlan(2009-2015)whichtheCommissionoftheEuropeanCommunitieshaslaunched.ToachievegoalsofActionplan,therewasaneedtoestablishonedaydedicatedspecificallytoorganandtissuedonationandtransplantationinordertoattractmoreattentiontotheissue,tospreadcredibleinformationandtosensitizethepublic.HowevertherewasnovasttraditionorguidelinesdevelopedfortheogranisationofaEuropeanDonationDay(EDD).

EU FUNDED PROJECT: DEVELOPING GUIDELINES FOR THE ORGANISATION OF A EUROPEAN DONATION DAY

Inordertohelpraisepublicawarenessandattracttheattentionofthepublictotheissueoforgandonationandtransplantation,acommonframeworkfortheEuropeanDonationDay(EDD)celebrationwasneeded.Schemeofthecelebrationhasbeendevelopedduringtheproject“DevelopingguidelinesfortheorganizationofaEuropeanDonationDay”(2009–2011)fundedbyEUHealthProgrammeframework.Moreoverthegoaloftheprojectwastoevaluateevent’sawarenessraisingpotential.

EuropeanDonationDayisshorternameforEuropeanDayforOrganDonationandTransplantation.Tissueandcelldonationandtransplantationareintegratedintheconceptofthedayaswell.

The main goals and objectives of a unified EDD celebration are:

• Toraisepublicawarenessinthefieldoforganandtissuedonationandtransplantation.• Toexpressacknowledgmenttoallthepeopleinvolvedintransplantprocess (whoaretransplantpatientsandtheirfamilies,organdonorfamilies,healthcare professionals).• Toestablishtrustamonggeneralpublictowardsresponsible,highethical, non-commercialandprofessionalorgandonationandtransplantation.• Toshareanddiscusschallengesandinnovationsintransplantmedicineamonghealth careprofessionals.• Inalongtermtoincreasethenumberoforganandtissuedonors;withcontinuousand yearlyrepetitiveEDDeventswecanachieveabiggerimpact.

WithyearstheoccasionofEDDisseentobecomeaprimaryawareness-raising“voice”andeventregardingorganandtissuedonationandtransplantationinEurope.

Towards a unified European Donation Day: second Saturday in October.

PROJECT SURVEY: MEASURING AWARENESS POTENTIAL OF EDDPartoftheprojectwasanevaluationsurveyoftheEuropeanDonationDaythatwascon-ductedinSlovenia,Austria,Croatia,CzechRepublicandSlovakia(in2010).TheaimofthesurveywastomeasureawarenessraisingpotentialofEDDcelebrationamonggeneralpublic.Webinterviewing(CAWI)wasperformedintwowaves:Amonthbeforetheeventandagainrightaftertheevent.Questionsaboutpublic’sinformation,knowledge,opin-ionaboutorgandonationandawarenessofEDDcelebrationwereasked.Ineachcountryasampleof700respondents,representativeaccordinggender,ageandregionwasused.ThecomparisonoftheresultsbeforeandafterthecelebrationshowedanimpactoftheEDDcelebrationonmeasuredvariables.Thesurvey’sstatisticalresultsconfirmedthepur-poseofhavingEDDcelebration.

Thisposterarisesfromtheproject“DevelopingguidelinesfortheOrganizationofaEuropeanDonationDay”,whichhasreceivedfoundingfromtheEuropeanUnion,intheframeworkoftheHealthProgramme.
