PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In September of 2011 Sutron completed installation of a GLOF Early

Warning System on the Phochhu and Punatsangchhu Rivers. The original

system consisted of 4 stream gauge stations, 2 hydromet stations and

17 siren stations along with a control center in Wangdi. Since that time

Bhutan’s Department of Hydro-met Services (DHMS) has determined that

an expansion of the system in the Moshhu and Tarina Sub-basins would be

prudent in order to improve the early warning system.

Expansion of this GLOF Early Warning System consists 5 new stations

comprised of 2 additional stream gauge stations, 2 additional hydromet

stations and 1 additional siren station. This brings the total system to 6

stream gauge stations, 4 hydromet stations and 18 siren stations.

The water level stations detect a sudden rise in stream levels or a sudden

drop in lake levels. If user-defined threshold values are exceeded, sirens

are activated that are located downstream and in the populated areas.
