Study Abroad

This was our first day in china! We were on our way to the hospital because a student needed stitches! What a way to start a trip in a foreign country!!!!!!

Guangzhou, China 3rd Largest City in

China Largest in Southern

China Manufacturing hub

for Pearl River Delta Mainland China’s

leading commercial and manufacturing region.

Climate:Subtropical

It is really humid in the region. I found that carrying an umbrella shielded me from the sun. Be sure to drink plenty of water!

Fun fact: Kyle is a Chinese language and culture minor! He was excited to be challenge his abilities in China.

Gorgeous Architecture and Status

Ivory carving Bonsai tree

This Ivory carving was particularly stunning. This picture does not do it justice because it does not show the amount of intricacy and detail the artist put into this.

Teaching: The Experience of a Lifetime

ESU and SCNU students participate in a group discussion.

ESU graduate students, Brad Kessell teaching American Culture: College Life.

Fun Fact: Only one student from the ESU group was a Teaching Major!

Not knowing what to expect, we spent at least 2 hours a night preparing for class the next day. Teaching is HARD WORK!

ESU students, Daniel Zachary and Brad Kessell enjoying tea time before lunch.

ESU students get a lesson on playing Mahjong.

Tea and Mahjong are both important parts of the Chinese Culture.

A day at the beachWho says teachers are not fun? Two ESU student teachers enjoying an hour at the beach!

TransportationSubway: ESU group during their first time on subway in Guangzhou. ESU Grad Student, Brad

Kessell on sleeper train to Beijing. (only 26 hours)

Advice: When booking ticket for sleeper train… book the bottom, more expensive bunk. There is no ladder to use if you are in the middle or top bunk

Free time

Great Wall of China Forbidden City

Welcome to the Great WallAlmost to the wall (5.5 hour hiking total)

Brad Kessell nearing the tallest point of this portion of the wall.

Great WallFinally made it to the top!

Brad Kessell couldn’t be happier

Instead of going to the touristy section of the Great Wall. We went to another and were able to hike a trail to the wall!! What a workout!
