CarmelCollegehasafriendlyatmosphere,withtutorsthataremorethanhappytohelp.TheEPQhasallowedmetofurtherimprovemyindependentresearchandreportskills,aidingmyapplicationforuniversity.TheEPQtakesplaceoutsideofchosensubjects,providingyouwithmeanstostudyfurtherintoatopicofinterest,perhapsnotentirelyrelatedtothesubjectsbeingstudied.Aonetoonesessionwithyourassignedsupervisorevery2weeks,allowsforyoutositdownwithatutoranddiscusswhatneedstobedoneinordertomeetdeadlines.Youaresupportedthroughouttheentireprocess.IhaveenjoyedmytimeatCarmelCollege,makingnewfriendswhoIwillstayintouchwith,includingsomeofmytutors.IhopetostudyGeographyattheUniversityofLiverpoolandIstronglybelievethattheEPQhashelpedmeprepareforstudyinHigherEducation.

IoptedtotakepartintheExtendedProjectQualificationbecauseitwouldgivemetheopportunitytoexploretopicsofinterestoutsideofthesubjectsIamstudyingatCarmel.IthasbeenarewardingexperiencethathashelpedtodevelopmyresearchabilitiesandallowedmetointerviewprofessionalsthatarerelatedtothecourseIwishtostudyatuniversity.IfeeltheEPQhasreallyhelpedtostrengthenmyuniversityapplicationasitisagreatwaytoshowyourcommitmenttoindependentlearning,whichisanessentialskillwhenstudyingatdegreelevel.

Youwillhavetheopportunitytochooseanareaofresearchyouwanttostudy.Youcompletealogbooktodocumenttheprocessandthedecisionsyouhavemadealongtheway.Youplan,researchandcarryoutyourprojectandthenprepareapresentationtosharetheoutcomes.Alongthewayyouaresupportedbyyoursupervisorwhowilladviseyouandactasasoundingboardbutyoumakethedecisions,justifythemandthenevaluatethewholelearningexperienceattheend.Youwillbecomeamorecritical,reflectiveandindependentlearner.

Thefinishedproductcantakeavarietyofformssuchasatraditionaldissertationbutreallyitisonlylimitedbyyourimagination.

UniversitieslookveryfavourablyonEPQastheyknowitdevelopsthehigherlevelskillstheyarelookingforandsomeofourCarmelstudentshavehadoffersformedicine,veterinaryscienceandfromOxford,forexample,andfeelthattheEPQreallygavethemadistinctadvantageintheirpersonalstatementsandatinterview.TheEPQalsoattractsUCASpoints.

EPQisalsoanexcellentoptionforyouifyousimplyhaveapassionforacertainfieldandwouldrelishtheopportunityofspendingtimeindulginginresearchingatopicofyourchoice.

Tocompletethecourseyouneedtosubmitaproduct,whichisbasedonyourresearch,aproductionlogwhichhasrecordedtheexperienceandapresentation.
