Guzzini Group - Fimag
The Guzzini group is made up of threecompanies. In order of incorporation,they are : Fratelli Guzzini Spa, iGuzziniIlluminazione Spa, Teuco Guzzini Spa.All are headquartered in Recanati Italy.Although each Guzzini companyoperates independently from theothers and in a different marketsector, the Guzzini companies alsoshare the following common things:
- A natural propensity towardproducing objects for both domesticenvironments as well as for common areas;
- A strong predilection for quality andperformance by choosing only the mostmodern and innovative materials;
- A predisposition and true vocationfor innovation, both in design and intechnology;
- A deep conviction that IndustrialDesign plays a central role in each and every company.
Fimag, which stands for FinanziariaMariano Guzzini, was established in1982 with these basic, underlyingand unifying precepts. Although theyeach have their separate operationsand companies, Mariano Guzzini'schildren and grandchildren are allreunited under the Fimag umbrella.
iGuzzini - The History and CompanyPhilosophy
We have worked in and for lightsince 1958. This was the year when the Harvey Creazioni, a small companythat produced lamps for the home, was founded. Today we are the leadingItalian manufacturer in the Lightingmarket, and we rank among the topEuropean manufacturers. We arent satisfied by simply makinggood lights. We want be the creatorsof good lighting: light that shines in aroom, a house, a building, a museum,a cathedral, a company, a plaza, anairport, and, yes... even an entire city.Good lighting has to be created withthe awareness that it has to integratewith its environment, taking care notto invade it, darken it, or violate it.Light must be respected, and lighthas to, in turn, respect the nature of people and things. The iGuzzinimission is therefore to study light, to know light and to make it known;improving the integration witharchitecture through industrial design.Because of this, a large part of whatwe do is to offer consultation onlighting techniques, both in the designphase and as an after-sales service.Famous architects and designers haveconsulted us since the very beginningiGuzzini's operations.
Light design is not just for spaces;good design is also an awarenessof all aspects that are tied to thequality of space and the ambiancethat is created by light, both indoorsas well as outdoors. Because of this conviction, iGuzzini has workedwith a large number of researchers,physicians, sociologists, andphysicists who hail from the mostimportant international researchorganizations: Harvard University,M.I.T Boston, UniversitLa Sapienza in Rome, Politecnicoof Milan, Fraunhofer Institute, CentralInstitute for Restoration, CNR.
Awards and recognition
iGuzzini products can be found in allkinds of different locations: airports,historical districts, museums, shops, archaeological areas, and multifunctional spaces. We have received some of the bestEuropean awards for industrial design,such as the Gold Compass, conferredto iGuzzini three times by the ADI,(Associazione per il DisegnoIndustriale / Industrial DesignAssociation). In 1989 the GoldCompass was won for Shuttledesigned by Bruno Gecchelin;in 1991 it was given to all the Guzzinicompanies, and in 1998 the GoldCompass was again won for Nuvoladesigned by R. Piano & Meccano.
iGuzzini headquarters
Mario Cucinellas project for ourindustrial headquarters expressesthe desire to unite natural elementsthat are tied to the environmentthat surrounds us with artificialman-made elements. It is therefore a work of architectureand nature, of technology, and of respect for the environment.Our environment is not only thelandscaping that surrounds thebuildings, but above all the interiorwhere real people live and work.This shows the level of sophisticationand care we have for design andthose minute technical details thatare dedicated to creating liveable and natural spaces made of air, natural light, and clean energy.With this project, we embarked uponon a search for architectural precisionand an environmental and mentalecology. By doing this, we found abalance and both artificial andnatural beauty.

Our company has focused itsmarketing efforts on the concept thatlighting quality is a fundamental needand contributes to the quality of itsenvironment. We have communicatedthis new way of thinking aboutlighting through a series of marketingactivities, the most important ofwhich are our advertising campaigns.
The advertising campaign wasdeveloped to be run in internationalmagazine and newspapers in orderraise awareness with the masses.Therefore, our ad campaign targetsare a wide range and a large numberof people, and not only the expertsof our particular market.
1982The Lighting IndustryLighting part VII. In 1982, ourcompany embarked upon a campaignthat intended to illustrate theadvantages of lighting design as first
1990With iGuzzini, against lightpollution. In 1990s we realized thatdespite our commitment to top qualitylighting design, we still needed to raiseawareness. Therefore, we chose totackle an issue that was yet to havebeen addressed by anyone, an issuethat derives from poor lighting design.That issue is Light Pollution.
What exactly is light pollution? Basically, it is the dispersion ofartificial light upwards and/or towardany direction that does not need light. This successful campaign caught theattention of the public as well aslegislators and administrators whodecided to direct their attentionto this important issue.
step toward environmental quality.We began to create a dossier withdifferent volumes, each dedicated to a different and specific lighting issue.
2002-08Partners for Better LightLighting has become a key elementas we strive to create or maintainwell-being. In order to achieve thisgoal we enlisted the help of manyassociations. The slogan of our lastinternational campaign is: Partners for Better Light.
1988 in collaboration with the CNR and with the LightingResearch Centre in Troy. We were able to show, through the data from our experiments, how artificial lighting can affect all human beings' psychological and physiological equilibrium.
2000Better Light for Better Life1998 marked the beginning of ourquality of life and personal wellnessresearch, as we began to turn ourattention to light pollution in interiorspaces as well as exteriors.We continued the biodynamic lightresearch that we had already begun in

Light pollutioniGuzzini
A link with the sky has always beenatavistic for mankind. Placing a barrierto this relationship provokesimbalances in the natural balance ofthings, not just for mankind, but alsofor plants and animals. In the congress held in Paris in June1992, UNESCO highlighted theenormous damage wreaked uponastronomy by excessive artificiallighting and declared that starry nightswere a part of the worlds heritagethat should be safeguarded. Theculprit of all this is light pollutionwhich also results in the waste of30% of the energy used (dataprovided by Dark Sky Association)to light up cities.
To resolve the problem, there is noneed to plunge cities into the dark,but simply to adopt rules governinglighting which make use of fixtureswhich, through the use ofconcentrating and asymmetric optics,light-refracting screens and fresnellenses, are able to provide effectivelighting without increasing the alreadyhigh level of light pollution. It is not enough just to use thesedevices; any installation ormaintenance must be undertakenproperly to ensure light pollutionis kept to a minimum.
Fittings which ensure a tight controlof light pollution are highlighted withthis symbol.

TechnologyLED technology single-handedlytakes on this role. At first used forsignalling and indicator lighting, it hasradically changed, becoming todayslight of the future. LEDs haveinnovative and advanced technicalfeatures, as well as a very small size,which allow the products to beinserted into any light fitting. LEDs are therefore the most effective
alternative to traditional lamps(incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen) when lighting interiorsand exterior public, industrialand private areas.It is estimated that the luminousefficiency of LED's will double in5 years and almost triple in 13 years,consequently increasing theenergy saving.
ResearchiGuzzini has always been sensitive to needs and requirements of themarket; the Company utilizes itstechnical and cultural lighting know-how to offer highly innovativeinstruments that are able toknowingly combine LED technology,design, and the top quality that hasalways accompanied iGuzziniproducts. Todays modern life has ever morerisks tied to pollution and the need tomoderate the use of traditional energysources. We need to be more andmore vigilant when it comes to theenvironment.
Lighting, therefore, has to contributeto energy savings and provide asolution to the rising costs ofelectricity, all the while yielding thesame lighting efficiency as always.
PerformanceAn LED (Light Emitting Diode) has low energy consumptionand high potential yield. Produced andbuilt without interior filaments (which are more fragile and subjectto rupture), or mobile parts, LEDs ensure a longer life andmore dependability comparedto other lamps. Via special devices (chips) it ispossible to insert and manage a largenumber of LEDs in one fitting at thesame time (even different colouredLEDs). This guarantees maximumcustomization and management oflight and colour to create beautifullight scenery.

Saving Energy is an issue thatrequires attention and dedication.As a testament to our devotion toenergy savings, "-CO2 ReLighting"was born. This project's objectiveis light quality by using less energy,and therefore less CO2 emissions.To do this, iGuzzini has made fittingsand lighting systems that usetechnology to contain the amount of energy that is used and thereforeto reduce pollution:High efficiency lamps, high yieldoptics and electronic componentsthat can connect networks withcontrol systems in order to managefittings. We can thus reduce energyrequirements by using electricity inadequate quantities and only when it is truly needed.

Light has always had a fundamentalrole. And it's on light that iGuzzini hasfounded its corporate identity anddeveloped its research. Either naturalor artificial, light is part of our life andaffects our biological rhythms anddaily activities. Over the years iGuzzinihas carried out an intense researchprogramme that has led to thedevelopment of lighting managementsystems to take full advantage ofcorrect lighting.
Back in 1988 the investigationstarted with Sivra;, in collaborationwith Spazio S.a.S of Milan, theNational Research Institute, theLighting Research Center of theRensselaer Polytechnic Instituteof Troy and Futuro of Florence.The project demonstrated theimportance of correct lightingmanagement in work activities.Originally developed as a solution toproblems encountered in enclosedsettings, Sivra (Variable LightingSystem with Automatic Regulation)showed that the use of light can
stimulate the human body, improveconcentration and productivity skills.Sivra is the first concrete result of theinvestigation, which has continueduninterrupted since then.
Sivra laboratoryDynamic light automatically changeslight levels and colour temperature.
Circadian clock
Natural light, in its daily rhythm, can be considered lifes very clock,producing scientifically measuredpsychological and biological effectson human beings. The iGuzzinibiodynamic lighting systemsreproduce, in areas where they areinstalled, Bright Light and dynamic light.Bright Light is light that is, by virtueof very intense lighting (over 2500 lux),able to augment the production ofhormones in our bodies duringthe hours we are awake.The desire to sleep will diminish,making us more active and receptive toexternal stimuli, positively influencingour mental states and improving ourmood without producing stress.
Dynamic light, changes lightinglevels and colour temperatures.It increases the stimulating capabilityof the space and it keeps our mindsactive. This is an important issue ifyou consider that today the majorityof work spaces are not the slighteststimulating. Dynamic light alsocreates a temporary dimension justlike sunlight, giving us a chronologicalmeasurement of time.

Todays spaces are continually intransformation, as configurationschange and evolve, and as each designproject has a distinct personality.Light has an essential role: it attractsand informs, it communicates, andit can be modern yet timeless.Light is credibility and gratification.Light makes one feel safe, itincreases wellness, and stimulatescommunication and comprehension.Scene Equalizer simplifies the dynamicvariation of spaces and perception oflight; it sets programmes and ever-changing light sequences. The control panel of Scene Equalizer,which operates with a DALI protocol,allows the user to select and carry outdifferent light settings for spaces thatare used for work, retail, and service.
Maximum customization, easyinstallation, energy savings, flexibilityin light direction: Scene Equalizer is avery active lighting system. Fromstable, immovable, and monotonous,light now is vibrant and alive, takingadvantage of new opportunitiesand smart technology. Scene Equalizer,based on set parameters, turns thefittings on and starts a scene. The scene is carried on either until thefollowing command or in compliancewith planned timing - one environmentat a time. The scenic light effects areable to stress emotions, technologicalneeds, and operating developments.Intensity, movement, colour are thenew variable parameters in lighting thatcan be programmed and carried outwith just a few simple actions.

With the new Scene Equalizersystem the user can create an all-encompassing light choreographythat is appropriate for each space with timed lighting sequences andsettings. The system controls up to DALI Il controls a maximum of 64+64 addresses, each addresscorresponds to a specific dalicomponent that is connected to the lamps (transformers, electroniccontrollers, relays, dimmers).Different spaces are managed withconfigurations of up to 32 groupsof lamps, each of which can haveup to 16 static settings.
PC InterfaceThe system can be programmed andmanaged with a special interface orvia a computer station. Each fittinghas an icon and can be visualized ondownloadable maps. With simpleclicks of the mouse the user caninteract with the system, moving oractivating different features.
Black outWhen power returns after a blackout,the system will automatically restoreeach lamp to its setting as it was beforethe power interruption, without havingto reconfigure the entire system.
Setpoint Selection of the reference value ofluminous intensity (by changing thelux). The set value is maintainedthrough continuous compensationof the light from the outside or otherlight sources.
