Bed bugs are a fairytale from children’s rhyme.

Fiction

Bedbugs are real. They are true bugs that belong to the order Hemiptera. They are wingless and have piercing/sucking mouthparts that they use to feed on  warm blooded animals including humans.

Scorpions have the ability to glow.

Fact

Scorpions have a protein in their outershell that floresce under UV light. It is believed to be how they communicate with their mates under moon light.

Tarantulas are deadly to all humans.

Most tarantulas are not strongly venomous to humans but their bite can be fatal to those with allergic reactions.

Processed foods are 100% insect free.

Fiction

Insects are a part of all processed food from wheat meal for bread to tomato ketchup. It's impossible to keep mass-produced food 100% insect-free. There are regulations stating the maximum amount of bug bits that food can contain and still be fit for human consumption.

During the American Civil War, the wounded who did not receive prompt treatment often had their wounds infested with blowfly maggots. Surprisingly, these wounds healed faster, with less infection thus avoiding amputation.
