Fall 2
CR
Fall 2, what a special moment in time that was and how lucky we all are to have
been a part of it. Through the hardships we overcame, the laughs we shared at
work and in camp, and the sense of accomplishment we felt as we crushed trails,
slayed beach grass, built fences, and restored the Metolius River’s banks, we
became a family. I’d like to thank you all for your individual contributions that fall
which compiled to create collectively what we refer to as “NYC Magic”. I hope
you all enjoyed yourselves out there as much as I did and I look forward to
catching you further on down the trail.

Monday- Describe what your crew did this weekend.
This weekend the crew and I did a 17 hour drive in total to reach our work site. Today
this drive actually gave us some good needed time to get to know each other and our
leaders. When we arrived at camp we were met with an awesome yurt which we are
using as our kitchen. We quickly set up our tents, unhooked the trailer, set up our
kitchen, and made shotgun as well as dinner. All in all it was a very good and
successful day and we are already behaving as a family.

Tuesday-Describe your project this week: Where are you? What are you doing?
Why?
Today was our first day officially working together. Not only was it our first day, but our
first day of seeing how well we can cope with each other while working. The work we
are doing is clearing a biking trail for two weeks. The work the crew displayed was
good for the first day. Most of all we did it as one big team because there is no such
thing as “I” in team.

Wednesday- Describe Your crew’s goals for the week.
Our crew’s goals for the week are to work together as a team, and work hard every
minute we are out there. Vibes around camp have been extremely positive, and I’m
sure everyone wants to keep it that way. People volunteer to do chores and I think that
is very cool. There is an infamous “shark week” where people are tired and testy. But I
don’t see that happening with this crew!
Some of us want to gain self-confidence, and I can see it happening already! Most of
us want to become stronger, physically and mentally. A personal goal of mine is to find
myself, but I’m sure that applies to some people. We are just scratching the surface as
a team and a family. I’m excited to see how it all unfolds.

Thursday- Describe what your crew learned this week.
So far this week our crew has learned quite a lot. One of many things is how to work as
a team, as well as communicating efficiently. Some people have learned more
individual things such as actually having hard, physical work. We have also learned
more non-work type lessons, like taking seven random teenagers and two crew leaders,
and making them your family, which, speaking for myself I have never done, and we are
actually having success! All in all, we have learned quite a bit together, and I’m very
excited to see what we learn later.

Friday- Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week.
This week we have accomplished repairing an old trail and we rerouted the trail as well.
We also accomplished coping with each other the first week as well as worked together
efficiently. Also have a lot of trust and respect for each other. As well as many other
crews we are not one to quit on each other. As for challenges, we all have accepted
one and this challenge is: if one crew member falls we all work harder so he can
recuperate. Some other challenges the crew has faced are motivation, fatigue, and
being sore all over, throughout these accomplishments and challenges I believe this
crew will not quit and will complete every task thrown our way.

PROJECT NAME: Warm Springs Ridge Osberg Trail Reroute
NATIONAL FOREST: Sawtooth

Monday- Describe what your crew did this weekend.
This weekend we took a trip to the Payette River on the other side of the Sawtooth
Range. On the way there we stopped in a town where many folks thought Josh Abel’s
garb was strange. We had an interesting clothes washing experience: the dryers didn’t
work. Thanks to Maria we found a different Laundromat to dry our wet clothes. On the
way home we had a jam session to Dub-step.

Tuesday-Describe your project this week: Where are you? What are you doing?
Why?
This week we are cutting in some back slope in Idaho. We are also cutting down the
outside of the trail to define where the real trail is and get rid of the false tread. We are
doing all of this so as to widen the trail so that bikers and hikers have enough room to
move around. We are cutting down the outside of the trail so that everyone that goes
on the trail truly knows where the solid tread is.
Written By: Joshua Abel
Wednesday- Describe Your crew’s goals for the week.
The crew’s goals for the week are to finish cutting the back slope on the rest of the trail.
We are almost finished and we will accomplish this so long as we work hard and finish
off the week as a team. Once we are finished with the trail we are assigned, we will be
rearranging logs at the head of the trail near camp. We plan on finishing off our
remaining days in Idaho searching to leave with a sense of accomplishment as we
complete one of the best trails this mountain has seen.
Written By: William Kauffman
Thursday- Describe what your crew learned this week.
This week my crew learned what it is like to finish a trail and how good it can feel to
finish a job. For our next day of work we’ll be doing as much as we can on a different
trail before heading back to Oregon. Idaho’s been awesome but we’re all excited to see
what’s in store for us next.
Written By: Jon Altomare
Friday- Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week.
This week the crew was challenged with finishing off the biking trail. It only took a few
more days after the first week. We actually finished one day early, and with finishing
that part of the trail early the forest ranger asked if we could work on another part of the
trail. With that challenge the crew accepted it quickly. As for our accomplishments the
crew finished the trail that we have worked on for two weeks. Finishing the trail made
everyone excited and happy that we accomplished what we were hired for.

NATIONAL FOREST: Umatilla
RANGER DISTRICT: Walla Walla
Monday- Describe what your crew did this weekend.
On Friday we went to the “Y” where we met a really cool lifeguard, who let us use the
slide before it was open. Later we drove 14 hours to the Umatilla Reservation. On
Saturday we explored Elgin where we checked out a yard sale and found some
awesome tapes for the van. Sunday morning we had a birthday extravaganza for which
our fearless leader provided bacon, eggs and potatoes.

Tuesday-Describe your project this week: Where are you? What are you doing?
Why?
This week the crew and I are rebuilding and fixing a fence system around a group of
aspens. We are also removing the conifers from within the fence as well. We are doing
this to hopefully replenish the lost lives of the aspens. Not only did we receive a new
project, we received two new crew members; Nick and Michael. Our crew didn’t just
grow two new members, but made us that much better.
Written By: Dereck Peil
Wednesday- Describe Your crew’s goals for the week.
Our crew’s goals for the week are to impress our contact by working efficiently and
showing him that we are fast. Another goal of ours is to work more as a team. It is the
third week and there is an infamous “shark week” that usually happens by this time, so
we need to fix/prevent that. A serious goal is NOT LOSE ANYMORE TOOLS. We want
to be the only crew that has no one quit. We also want to make the new crew members
feel at home by including them in our conversations, doing activities with them, and
listening to what they have to say!
Written By: Steven Pickard.
Thursday- Describe what your crew learned this week.
So far this week my crew and I have learned that we are very capable of accepting new
family into our crew of Idaho crazed, dyed haired, Vorts wearing misfits. We have also
learned that I apparently have the worst aim ever when it comes to trying to hit a nail
with a single jack, as my hands are really sore from hitting them. We have learned the
essentials of how to build large wooden fences from the ground up, including repair and
even the gate/entrance. We have also learned how to keep busy as this work is not as
demanding of all our time.
Written By: Josh Abel
Friday- Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week.
Our crew was faced with quite some challenges this week, including accepting two
new people, and living with them, working with them, and of course riding in the van
with them. Another challenge was our many small projects that people were trusted to
finish with quality. Our crew also accomplished a lot of things, such as repairing four
fences by re-enforcing them, filling gaps, and even rebuilding a new section, which was
done very well. We also built three fences surrounding aspens. This job required us
carrying 12 -80 pound cow panels through the forest. All in all, our crew has faced
many challenges, yet managed to come out accomplishing all that was asked.

Monday- Describe what your crew did this weekend.
This weekend our crew went to the weekend site for the first time. Prior to that we had
a long car ride from Elgin where we arrived around 2:30 in the morning at the weekend
site. Our crew went to a park by the Willamette River for our rec trip where we shaved
heads and painted faces for most of the day. We had an amazing dinner with all the
families and crews followed by an NYC talent show with amazing performances by all
different crews,

Tuesday-Describe your project this week: Where are you? What are you doing?
Why?
Today is Monday and it was a great start to the week (besides three hours of our
contacts talking.) I personally feel more tired the less I work. But besides that…we split
up into two different crews and half of us did trail work (I think) and the other worked
near a really cool fish hatchery that is placed on a beautiful river called the Metolius
River. The crystal clear water is something you can’t stop staring at. Good start to the
week and very productive as well.
Written By: David O’Donovan.
Wednesday- Describe Your crew’s goals for the week.
This week our crew is next to the Metolius River working on multiple projects near it.
Our major goal for this week is for us to finish all the projects they expect us to and to
make it so they are trying hard to find things for us to do. We have done very well
going fairly quickly through what’s been asked with good quality, and in this we have
worked very well together. All in all, we will do our best to finish all that is asked of us
and some.
Written By:Josh Brisbin.
Thursday- Describe what your crew learned this week.
The crew this week has learned many things; from building bridges, to using better
communications, team work, and more. These experiences will help this crew be
stronger. Some of the crew have learned how to landscape and turn a plain river side
into a more lively looking river bank. The crew has not only learned new things and new
experiences; we also learned more about Michael and Nick who have been working
with us for a week and a half now.
Written By: Dereck Peil.
Friday - Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week.
A stream of whispers slid, slip past ethereal and morphing lips. Burbling and gurgling
murmurs fill the air, yet I am deaf to their fair. A week I have worked upon its shores,
toiling as it is roiling some few feet away. And yet to this day I feel the presence of
something far, something making a cacophonic din. Perhaps it is not a single entity, but
a menagerie, a multitude whose platitude defined by their attitude of effervescence.
They speak, and yet no one hears. Still they seek open ears. They yell from the well of
their spring fed life, they reach within. To how we begin, a young boy filled with joy. As
the world tarnishes, cakes upon us, we bury that boy deep inside, fearfully away we
hide, the joy within. Yet the Metolius spoke to all of us, and it said: Let the boy be free.
Come, and play with me.

Monday – Describe what your crew did this weekend.
This weekend my crew and I went to the weekend site just like everyone else. On
Sunday after we left the weekend site we discovered that it was about a thirty minute
drive to the work site. So we decided to go to “Rays” shopping center for about an hour
to hangout. We went on about a twenty minute hike, hungout and did some hot springs
swayding then hiked back to the rig and headed for the worksite.

Tuesday- Describe your project this week: Where are you? What are you doing?
Why?
This fine and final week Orange Crew has returned to the beautiful Metolius River near
Sisters Oregon. We are working in the same spots we worked on last week; we are
back by popular demand to finish up the restoration of the river bank by planting
different native species. This is in order to hold the bank from eroding into the river.
Written By: Jon Altomare
Wednesday-Describe your crew’s goals for the week.
The crew’s goals this week is to finish the work we started last week on the Metolius
River. The work goal for this week is to plant all the plants that our contacts brought. We
are also hoping to finish the smaller restoration sites that we are working on as well. So
far we have gotten two of the three places we worked on last week planted and
finalized. The biggest goal of all is to finish the week off and have the big clean that
awaits us, along with overcoming our exit mentality.
Written By: Dereck Peil
Thursday-Describe what your crew learned this week.
Our crew learned how to plant and rehabilitate riverside areas. Most of the crew has
spent time digging holes and planting shrubbery; but a select few have learned how to
build steps, gravel in trails and break log trailers. Sometimes hole digging becomes
extremely tough. In these times crew members have resorted to boots and rock bars.
It’s been fun.

At NYC I Learned… Describe 3 things you learned from your NYC experience.
I learned that team work goes a long way, when someone says they “can’t” do
something it only means they won’t, and after sessions all I want is the woods.
Written By: Josh Abel
At NYC I learned how to build trails. I also learned how to build fences around trees.
Another one would be building bridges, planting plants, and restoration work. Finally, I
learned how to cope and work with total strangers.
Written By: Steven Pickard
I learned how to socialize with new people and not to give up on working. I also learned
how to build fences and plant and restore wild habitat.

At NYC I learned many new work experiences that will stay with me forever. I’ve learned
how to build trails, make some fences, and how to build a small but heavy foot bridge,
and finally being able to work with complete strangers.

At NYC I learned to respect my environment and take care of it. I also learned how to
push my limits as well as the fact that it’s good to get some alone time which we don’t
get out here.

My Three Favorite NYC Experiences Were…
First was my entire first session, second was working in the Marble Mountain wilderness
for two weeks on my second session, and third was my entire BLP session.
Written By: Josh Abel
My first favorite experience was in Idaho when we went to some hot springs. Second
would have to be the fabulous views I saw while hiking into our work site in Idaho. My
third would have to be building a bridge and watching salmon spawn on the Metolius.
Written By: Steven
My first would have to be learning how to build Cowboy fences. My second would be
restoring by the Metolius River and third is building a small bridge.

My Most Challenging Day at NYC Was…
My most challenging day at NYC was my very first day of my first session. It was my
hardest day ever because I was overweight and lazy and that session changed my life.
Written By: Josh Abel
My most challenging day at NYC was the time I was sick in Idaho. Being sick was tough
because not only did I hike a ways to work, but I was getting sick too.
Written By: Steven
My most challenging day was when I first met my crew. One of the reason’s would have
to be that they already know each other and another is I did not know how the work
would be.
Written By: Michael Salinas
My most challenging day at NYC… Well there was no day that was challenging. Only
thing would have to be is the weekend site just too many people there.
Written By: Dereck Peil
My most challenging day was my first session working long hours while my hand hurt
and I was sick.
Written By: Nick Reeve
My most challenging day at NYC was the first week being stuck in the van for the long
ride to Idaho.
Written By: Jon Altomare
My most challenging day at NYC would have to be the 3rd day of work. It was a 2 hour
hike and the hike alone was hard then we had to work till 4 then hike back. I’ve never
been so tired and frustrated in my life. But I like it. The hard work was gratifying and
made the rest of the session easy for whenever I thought it was hard, I thought of the 3rd
day.

My most challenging day of NYC was not a specific day… It was the first week, not
seeing my family was pretty difficult. But I got over it. I was also pretty depressed for
some reason, but my crew helped me with my funk and be very happy till the very end.

My most challenging day at NYC came in the first week. We walked a 3 mile trail at
9,000ft to work a 10 hour day. I was blessed with carrying a forty pound pick half way

Monday – Describe what your crew did this weekend.
We had a chance to meet each other for many of our first times. We shared a bus ride
full of laughter and bonding, and for many of us had our first experience with crew
dynamics. We learned that our first job was in the backcountry which existed most. I’m
really exhausted to see how our small family does being put to tests of unimaginable
strength and will power.

Our crew is working in the backcountry just outside Mt Hood. We are brushing and
cleaning trails to make them more accessible to hikers of all sorts. We have been
trimming limbs of overhanging branches and cutting back shrubs that are overgrown on
the trail.

Wednesday-Describe your crew’s goals for the week.
We’ve worked through some hard times and from what I can see our goal is to stick
together. Which means working together and learning how to make the best of the
worst. We all come from different backgrounds and that means we can all bring
something different to the table. I am hoping to be able to stick through this, and make
the best of it. We lost one person today which might make this job a little harder overall,
but I believe we have this under wraps. I feel I speak for everyone when I say we can all
get through this; hard or easy. We just have to take it one step at a time.

matures mentally and physically as the weeks progress.

Friday - Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week.
This very hour concludes our triumphant and strenuous work week. Number Uno! This
was not an easy feat to overcome. Like Christopher Columbus, Lewis and Clark, and
Dora + boots before us, we have conquered and corrected the ever growing vegetation
that intruded upon the majestic Plaza Trail. Our work is not yet over. It is possible that
we may not come out of these parts with all limbs intact. BUT – we will not give up so
easily. These monster plants are alive and kicking, but let’s be real. They’re plants.
Even if they had mutant fangs, red crew would break out our machetes and growl with
the snarl of a thousand beavers! Beavers, I say! With the help of the mighty Mountania
(source of all power) we will come out of the beautiful Mt. Hood National Forest a daring

state. However, everyone still holds strong to remain red crew till the end. We split into

sore and tired and that can create some irritability, I can’t wait to see everything calm
back down. And for everyone to make the best of the next few days.

and raw, bloody blistering cuts taking over their wittle feetsies. It ain’t easy, but we
made it work. And now here we are one day left in these parts, and we are more than

serious though my humps my humps my lovely lady humps yeah. That’s how I know it is
super hump day.
I believe that Red Crew is accomplishing these trails with great power no matter if we’re
going crazy, getting tired, break bones. We push through it together cuz we are a team,
for there is no 1 in Red Crew, if there was … well you can figure that one out.
Today went well. Ha ha. Well is a deep subject. But in all seriousness guys, I love this
crew and you guys believing in me helps me grow. Not to sound selfish, but I believe in
you guys just as much as you guys believe in me. We can push through anything no
matter what cuz “What are we?” Red Crew!! Ahhh!!

Thursday-Describe what your crew learned this week.
This week we began work on a new trail. The first day of work felt very familiar to most
of us as we worked on brushing yet again. The next day we learned how to cut tread
and spent a day and a half working our way up the switchbacks of the hillside. Also this
week, several of us learned how to build rock retaining walls and stone steps where the
hillside had blown out. These tasks, as many of us soon realized, required a great deal
of patience as we worked to maneuver rocks into place. Today we learned how to build
check steps as well as rolling drain dips as we proceed down a new trail.

Friday - Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week.
This week Red crew has accomplished many of things not the least of which was
forming as strong of a relationship with our brand new corps member Jake as we have
with everyone else. Our project was a brushing one yet against which was challenging
to jump in to for a third week, but red crew tackled it with intensity and a smile on our
faces (not surprisingly). Tensions rose this week as they often do third week, but we
handled them maturely and with poise. Red crew is continuing to grow and better
ourselves. We leave third week and enter fourth stronger as a unit and a family ready
for anything. Our blood flows RED!

WEEK # 4
Monday – Describe what your crew did this weekend.
This is an extraordinary moment. Yes, this moment as I speak. We have arrived smack
dab at the beginning of week number four! How did this happen?! We are now left with
only 2 measly weeks to conquer the planet. But, fear not, comrades. Red crew has
fared greater feats than this. We have overcome the giant beavers that used to rule
Cascadia and defeated the mutant rhodies taking over our beloved trails. We believe in
our total conquest in world domination. But other than we’ve been pulling out some
beach grass on the cost to save the Snowy Plover, a seemingly innocent bird who will
be useful in our future endeavors. Personally I am hoping to genetically modify their
DNA to make them 5x their normal size. Stay tuned.
Written By: Rachel
Tuesday- Describe your project this week: Where are you? What are you doing?
Why?
On a beach somewhere, we are drinking more water, not being scared of nobody. For
an entire week we will be showing the master, who goes by the alias of Snowy Plover,
that we can pull beach grass and live among them for a a week so that the master can
take us under their wing.
The master needs us to get rid of the European invaders in order to multiply among
these shores. After we have completed our duty for master they will be like, “word dude,
thanks.”
On the red crew, Danny Devil and Arnold revealed themselves to us to show their loving
support for the master. It won’t be long before the master sends us the salad support we
need because we have boss credentials. We are red crew, that’s what I thought. Word.
Written By: Jake Ingram
Wednesday-Describe your crew’s goals for the week.
The Red Crew has been foraging the sand dunes and loving it. Clearing a pathway for
the Snowy Plovers. All the while going insane. We plan to have completely lost our
minds before we arrive in civilization from our master; and losing our minds is our next
step in the plan they have formed.
A plan of which we know nothing more of at the moment. We are excitedly waiting to
hear further endeavors.
We will never falter. We will not fall, because we are Red Crew and standing tall!
Written By: Noah
Thursday-Describe what your crew learned this week.
This week our crew was put through the trials and tribulations of pulling endless
amounts of beach grass to please the master. How has this affected us you ask?
Imagine nine dehydrated, sore, tired youths and two fearless leaders being placed into
a desert-like beach full of beach grass. Then add gusting cold winds which buffets their
poor little faces and the result, a rising population in Snowy Plover. And yet again Red
crew emerges victorious. Let this be a calling to all noxious weeds. We are Red crew
and we are taking over!!

Friday - Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week.
We were challenged by the fact that pulling beach grass super repetitive and I’m sure
no the most fun. So staying motivated and on task was hard. The sun and wind were
relentless on some days and getting sun/wind burn was inevitable.
We accomplished a lot. We cleared a large area of sand in order to save the Snowy
Plovers and to use as a base to launch our rockets when we begin our assault on the
rest of this world. We have come to realize that people are minions of the evil beach
grass and only red crew has been able to break free from its hypnotic mind control. We
leave the wasteland known as the Oregon Coast with heads held high at the fact that
we are free as our brother and sisters the Snowy Plovers.

WEEK # 5
Monday – Describe what your crew did this weekend.
The Red Crew has landed in the Umatilla National Forest. And not long behind us was
the one and only Steve. We built beautiful fences to save even more beautiful trees
called CottonWoods.
We are camped by a fantastic little creek, and it seemingly wraps around our whole
worksite. Our entire crew has been one big working, well-oiled machine for the most
part. Goodbye : )

Tuesday- Describe your project this week: Where are you? What are you doing?
Why?
It’s Tuesday @ our new work site. Red crew is excited to work on so many interesting
jobs this week. But a grain of salt runs through our red blood. It would seem this is the
last Tuesday Red crew will spend together and it’s hittin’ us where it hurts. We don’t,
nay, we won’t accept defeat, so we all band together. The Red crew guys have taken a
pact of being were-wolves and the gals (slightly tired but not shaken) have taken the
more conventional approach of just being a tight nit team. We were ready for any
challenges including opposing wolf pack in the forest. Bring it on fifth week. Ooowooo!
Written By: Tim Lamb
Wednesday-Describe your crew’s goals for the week.
So guys we are at the last hump day ever this session. What do you guys think about
that??? So we plowed through that Aspen fence like there was no tomorrow for we are
Red crew. We are here to serve and protect our lil’ Aspen trees. We turn those no
fences into a fence and choose not to have third break so we can make a fence in
record time and start our next project. We did good guys, no wait, we did more than
good. We did great, just like Frosted Flakes.

Thursday-Describe what your crew learned this week.
Oh my dear lord. What is this madness: if my calculations are correct we are left with t-
minus 50 something hours and something minutes until our graduation ceremony. Great
Odens Raven.
But in reality, if you choose to believe this fact, you are a fool. It’s hard to believe we’ve
only been out here for three weeks, but I know we can push through guys. It’s only two
weeks. It would be a horrid sight to see us all get attached to the tight nit family we have
created, and then become in total denial of our eventual separation. But fear not, valiant
red crew. I know we can keep our focused minds at task so we may come out of this
program empowered and victorious. I love every hair on each of your heads and I find it
odd to picture myself without you. I am brimming with crew pride, and you’ll live in my
memories forever.

As we marched from our tents, and were hit by the cold the crew found Logan boiling
water for us all. He is wise with knowledge, with his kind gestures we see his love for us
you can clearly see if you agree.
When he leads us to the work-site, his pride shows as he is dusted in all the rivers
magic, even the trout wanted to come up and greet him with all his charm and thank
him, who is that man?
Written By: Nathan Wick
Today on the worksite I’ve noticed nothing but hard work and dedication. Through my
peers I have strengthened my social and skills, but most of all I have I have furthered
my work ethic. When I first entered NYC, I thought I would have a different/ strenuous
time of which I for my money. I thought wrong, and I am glad that I was proved wrong,
and very happy my thesis was wrong entirely.
I have seen bonds combine into friendships, and soar high, through the worksite
especially, that is where we “Dirty Trail Pirates” have our deepest conversations.
Though we consume nothing but Gorp and PB&J’s it sparks the conversations of good
food in which I find myself intrigued.

Wild things happen when a crew can finally unite as one. We can all say the trust and

happen. The communication and work ethic make the work days so much easier for
every single member, and learning about everyone’s background and stories they have
to tell/ teach us a lot and help us look at the world through different eyes and
perspectives. Working right along the river keeps everyone in a good mood and the
beautiful landscape makes everyone workday feels new and refreshed. Towards the
end of the week everyone is in an even better mood and hanging out around town not
having to work all day is a huge stress reliever. I’m looking forward to the last two weeks

Hi parents and other crew members,
I am writing this to tell you how great the day was.
We started with a two mile hike in to start work which consisted of brushing and
swamping. Throughout the day we grasped our saws and snapped our loppers and
charred with our dragon slayers high reaches. By midafternoon we were tired and
craved nourishment. Then Nathanael with his apple and peanut butter sandwiches
saved the day; along with Steven and his protein meat sandwiches. With the end of the
day in sight we gather our equipment and headed home.

Today was something new for me. We dug and pulled making a pond for the animals to
drink from and also pulling scotch broom. Lots of work got done today even though we
all didn’t feel so hot and had more dust then you would need in a lifetime, but out here
there is never enough. The scotch broom same in thick patches; a worthy foe I might
add but we prevailed. It was a long hot day but we had fun. It’s hard to believe that it’s
the fifth week already. Normally you would just want to be done with all the dirt bugs
and stanky white walls, but in the end I always miss it, this crew has been good to me
and each other. I always think the last week will be super slow but it’s not, it flies by not
in a good way. I will have to leave my new family of 5 weeks here in a few days but they
will never leave my memories.

Dear Kratos,
I love you. Now that we have that established, the work that we conducted today was

we hydrated profusely; so much water was consumed we could’ve sunk Atlantis we may
not have had your blades but we did have shovels of chads to dig our pond of lotus.

Monday- Describe what your crew did this weekend.
This weekend we went through the basics for Youth Corps. We got up early Sunday
and got to learn who our crew was going to be and where we were going this week. We
drove there and set up camp and got ready for our first day of work.

Tuesday – Describe your project this week: Where are you? What are you doing?
Why?
We’re in Bull of the Woods Wilderness, but we’re still front country, so that’s super chill
man. We’re working on an awesome trail with beautiful views. We’re doing a bunch of
tread work, and even more brushing. The crew is still learning, but I think we’ve got the
potential to be this side’s rock stars.

Wednesday- Describe your crew’s goals for the week.
This week we are all figuring out how to work together efficiently and cohesively. Many
of us have never done tread work, so this week is very educational. This is a perfect
opportunity for our crew to learn new skills as it is a mild but multi-faceted project.
I also hope our crew will start being more communicative during chores so fewer ends
are dropped. Our crew is pulling together very nicely and I have very high expectations
for this crew. By the end of this week, I hope our crew will have learned everything they
need to in order to function properly. I am very excited!

Thursday- Describe what your crew learned this week.
We learned about what OSHA was. Some of the lessons we learned were basic fire
control, lock out- tag out and employee rights. Also the new crew members learned how

than a few textbooks. Much less drag 60lbs packs up a mountain. We had to work late,
but we were walking on air once we dropped the packs off at camp. We all took more

horses don’t bang their heads. In NYC tradition, we don’t know anything more than we
need to…so who knows what the rest of the week has in store.

Yellow Crew is bound and determined to conquer this trail, This Mountain, our blisters,

minute. We wake up in the morning with the ambition to finish Zig-Zag trail, it definitely
lives up to its name. Over the mountain and through the forest we go, lopping,
chopping, bumping and tripping, to see that amazing view of Mt. Hood, to see that
amazing trail finished by yellow crew with their amazing Leaders

Thursday – Describe what your crew learned this week.
This week yellow crew learned that even the most challenging conquests can be
finished hiking up a gnarly trail very close to Mt. Hood we learned that pushing each

whole 9-10 crew members, Learning we can all have positivity towards each other
getting and keeping us closer together.

Friday- Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week.
In the past week yellow crew attacked and defeated Zig-Zag Mountain. It was pretty
freaking awesome. We hiked the devils tie trail, which is as intimidating as it sounds.
We also accomplished some personal goals. I myself finally twisted and curled my
moustache with the help of some honey. As this was our crew’s first backcountry
assignment, it wasn’t very easy for some of us, but by the end of the week those that
had been heartily challenged in the beginning became shining examples and
inspirations for the rest of the crew. The biggest challenge we faced this week was
definitely the hike to work, but the beautiful views we got to see every day were totally
worth it.

day. Most of the day was pretty quiet. At the end of the day Max took us to the beach. It
was an amazingly beautiful sight as we all were pelted in the face with sand and wind. I
found a crab carcass, it was awesome and I think Max is the coolest person ever.

minutes later, after putting on work clothes and packing my bag, I was on my feet and
out of the tent. Because we had to meet our contact Steve at 6:45am this morning we
didn’t waste time dirtying dishes for the bump line. Instead, breakfast consisted of a
handful of granola, coffee for some, and mateforme. At safety circle, my concern was
food ration and my stretch was the kitty. I was expecting more laughter then my crew
mates were willing to give, and that made me a sad panda. When Steve arrived he led
us over to our new worksite for an exciting last day project: pulling more weeds! Sea
Rock was the name and not spilling seeds was the game.

Journal Time
Today was a very reminiscent day. As we wildly chopped away at the vicious scotch
broom, we were reminded of the days long ago spent staring at glowing screens.
Memories of runes cape, wow, and Skyrim came rushing back, and the gods above
insisted we participate in our own game. We tackled the mighty ‘Broom with force and
ambition over the sandy dunes, in order to earn special items. 10 Points would get you
to level 1, 11 to level 2, and so forth. Our crew leader determined which plants deemed
full points, and then doled out items. Yellow crew became a force to be reckoned with
basic battle protection, fiery weaponry, and iron fast courage. We raged the Coos Bay
hills until no scotch broom was left standing. Mentally tough as rocks, and physically
strong as lions, yellow crew dom-dom’med the sand laden landscape, never had Steve
seen an army so strong and as worthy as ours. As amazing as our feats were today, I
can already feel it in my bones that tomorrow will be even more successful. To Infinite
and Beyond!

Crew leader: Maximus Araelius Pena Project Name: Siuslaw National Forest Crew Color: Yellow National Forest: Siuslaw Week: 5 Ranger District: Central Coast Monday- Describe what your crew did this weekend.
This weekend our crew went to the weekend site as usual, but this weekend we
participated in the mighty crew Olympics! We came in third place. Many a crew was
jealous of how we won much honor on that day and spirits of the trail shall reward us for
it.

Tuesday- Describe your project this week: Where are you? What are you doing?
Why?
Oh Yeah…. Yellow Crew on the roll again. Florence!! We rollin like power rangers.
Whoop we have our grubbers, hazels, and high reaches. The treads and long branches
tremble with fear as we stomp through the forest conquering our trail. Yellow crew to the
max. Singing with our tools in hand a busting through this project as fast as superman.
We’ve also found a fuzzy caterpillar. I call him spike.

Wednesday –
Suuuuper – Super Hump Day! Today was our very last Wednesday together. We did a
lot of overhead brushing as well as some tread work. The trail was made of damp, fluffy,
rich, soil, close to clay at some points. I got the honor of digging out an old drain pipe
and replacing it with a new bigger and nicer one. I spent most of the afternoon finishing
that project and smoothing and widening trail. The trail we were maintaining is an
equestrian trail, so it needed to be completely clear 12 feet high and six feet wide.
Tomorrow Steve will come visit us and work with us.

Thursday- describe what your crew learned this week.
Today, the crew did a lot of tread work, with some overhead brushing a couple of
people were put on special projects, like drainage ditches and pipes. It felt good to
finally work on some trail, not just brushing FREAKIN Invasives. The contact was very
pleased with the quality and quantity of the work we did. Yellow Crew’s bomb, yo.
Friday – Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week.
This week went by really quickly. We’d all built a lot of muscle and have gotten used to
the work. The only challenges were knowing we’d have to say our goodbyes soon, and
being surprised by rain on Friday.
